Radio Stations - Music Logs

Both crap

Both horrible.

I don’t get their music strategy at all. Surely in a duopoly market like Launceston it’s a no brainer. One CHR/Hot AC station and one older AC/Classic Hits station. Why serve up that mess?

Evidently not, as the same thing has been happening in Wollongong for years. Geelong too.

I can excuse Wollongong because the 2 stations have different owners. I can (almost) excuse Geelong because of the Melbourne overlap and having to differentiate themselves from the Melbourne stations. There’s zero excuse in Launceston.

The Hit / Triple M stations have better logs, as does XLFM / Eagle.

The Grant logs in monopoly & duopoly markets sound way too conservative and boring IMO.

My pick of the logs is the Eagle / Snow fm log for a CHR station.

LA fm could either go on the 2ST log or the Power 100 log if they really want to go rock.

I agree the one music log for their Hot AC stations is problematic look at the overlap markets of Wollongong and Nowra.

The previous CHR format that Power Fm Nowra and Krock had was pretty good it was basically 90’s to now.

Grant should produce

  1. CHR log 90’s to now but mostly 2000-2021 for Power Fm Nowra / Krock / similar to Eagle / Snow fm, or Power 100 log for Krock if they decide to go back to it’s rock heritage.

  2. Hot AC - 80’s to Now for Wave, Hot Tomato, Ho fm etc

  3. Rock-Power 100

  4. Greatest Hits -2ST, LA fm etc

Agree they are conservative and boring, but also just don’t seem at all “curated”. Just a jumble of songs that often clash. It’s a widespread problem in Australian radio. Music playlists don’t ‘flow’ like they do on most US or UK stations. It’s like they can’t shake off the “Jack FM” format of 20 years ago.

It’s doubly weird as in Burnie/Devonport you get the same log as Chilli on the Sea station, but then 7AD/7BU has a different format to LAFM/7SD, which is a more classic hits skew, though still not amazing.

Seems like a better two station market fit for no extra effort. It’s not exactly a great music format either, but it’s at least different.

But even if they kept their current weird positioning - the Hit/Mix Canberra split from above shows how two fairly close formats can still differentiate themselves well enough.

Actually, they carry the 7HO log (on weekdays), which is different to the one heard on Chilli.

It would provide a nice alternative for Sydney and Melbourne, but in Brisbane most of those songs are played on 4KQ. I still think 4BH needs a softer playlist.

It’s a good playlist, good variety of classic rock and soul/Motown.

Hey @Laoma - thanks for the nod. I run and program XS80s.

I know you have to have a subscription if one wants to listen to apple music, but is there any way of just getting their current playlist of a particular station without a subscription. Would like to get updated playlists of their station “Made for good times”. The sample playlist on the station’s front page of Apple Music is the same songs that were on there six months ago. Would it be listed on something similar to band it?

With ACE set to take over operations of Nine’s music stations 2UE, 4BH & Magic 1278 early next year (with Nine still owning the stations), here’s a sample of an ACE Heritage station in Regional VIC, which is the same across all of its stations.

Not bad. I think 2ue push the envelope a bit more today with its logs especially in the evenings ( a lot of lost 60s hits). I probably prefer 2UE’s current playlist because of this as you just hear different stuff (it might be crappy sometimes but that is ok).

Here is the Smooth Relax list. Someone mentions its a bit like 2ue. Whilst it does overlap a bit, I do believe 2ue is still different. Smooth relax is more safer, 2ue does dig into more variety of hits from the 60s/70s hits. I hope Ace radio will give 2ue some more love but keep the broad playlist.

I Knew I Loved You by Savage Garden
Honesty by Billy Joel
Somebody’s Crying by Chris Isaak
Hello by Lionel Richie
Anything For You by Gloria Estefan
Maybe I’m Amazed (Live) by Paul Mccartney
You’ll Think Of Me by Keith Urban
At This Moment by Billy Vera / The Beaters
All I Have To Do Is Dream by The Everly Brothers
Making Love Out Of Nothing At All by Air Supply
Baby Come Back by Player
Home by Michael Buble

Even though it’s most likely that ACE will use the same log for it’s classic hits stations in regional Victoria for Magic/2UE/4BH, I really hope they use a unique log in the metros with mostly 70s & 80s classics with some soul, motown and disco.

Very 70s and 80s heavy

Given the recent conversation about Wollongong radio of late in the relevant thread, I’d thought I take a look at how the two stations are faring at present.
