Yes what a clanger. I have to give them kudos though for The Weeknd / Blinding Light. Thatâs a cracker of a new song IMO - such an 80s vibe.
I still think the WS/Gold lists donât differ too much from 97.3/Mix. Throw in just one or two newer songs into WS and Gold and theyâd be pretty close. The real outlier of the 5 is 96FM in my opinion, and even then itâs not out of the ballpark. But as you say itâs the demo that ties the 5 together, minor differences in playlists arenât that important.
If I had to pick one, I think it would be Gold. That 96FM log has become very safe. It sounded better 3 months ago when I was in WA.
I am gob smacked how Mix 102.3 rates that well.
As you can see above, it has a real âClassic Hitsâ format, which does provide a good musical alternative to WS, Smooth & 2UE whilst in Western Sydney via 101.1FM, as well as being a music alternative to âTalkinâ Sportâ on 2BS whilst in Bathurst via 900AM.
Itâs also musically different to 2ST, which can be heard into Western Sydney & the Blue Mountains via 102.9 from Bowral. It used to sound a bit similar to 2LT, but has since moved to a more modern AC format, in which it uses the same log as River 94.9 in Ipswich.
Yup, I was just about to say that, though I would have to think a tad more adventurous, but not much. Most of it again cliche, but two stand outs seem to be Marcia Hines âsomethingâs missingâ. Last time I heard that on radio was on Hit radio 11 2UW in around 1981, and The Doors âRoad house bluesâ. Last time played on radio was when 2WS had just switched to FM in 1993, they still had a good portion of their old AM playlist before FMing it and culling it back by the mid 90s.
About two weeks ago 2UE played DeBargeâs âRhythm of the nightâ. Again, the last time this track got played on any commercial radio station was the original âmassive playlistâ version of the old 2Day FM in 1985; though I may think 2WL and 2OO in Wollongong might have given it a few spins in 1986 when I was staying with relos.
So maybe the old dorks of the radio industry are starting to leave and die off, and most probably with new talent behind the scenes of these stations, occasionally they can break out from âThe Systemâ
BTW that DeBarge song gets flogged on my iPod. But yeah itâs a rarity on the radio. Might have heard it on Magic UK or Breeze here in SEQ but thatâs about it.
I donât mind the 4BH playlist really and itâs good background for gym etc. They do need to keep it fresh though and watch out for the jarring of some songs.
Given the results of the Gold Coast radio ratings that was released this morning, which saw Hot Tomato rating 10% ahead of all the other stations, letâs look at the playlists of the three Gold Coast commercial stations.
