Radio History

Probably around 1994.

I wish they’d (or Wave, or both!) had stayed Classic Hits.

Both were much better listens back then than they are now.

I agree. Power FM being competitive in the Wollongong market made it such an interesting market, and allowed Wave to target older listeners whilst i98 targeted somewhere in-between Power & Wave. This was especially evident after Grant Broadcasters, who already owned Power FM (& 2ST), acquired Wave FM in November 1995.

They were CHR for most of ‘94 as that’s when I first discovered them. Never listened during their initial classic hits phase. That year I alternated between i98 and Power FM, thinking that it was most exotic to listen to Wollongong radio from Sydney.

By the way @TV-Expert , thanks for posting that Wave FM ad complete with the ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ positioner. You probably remember the billboards they used to have at Engadine and Dunmore (Shellharbour). I think the latter location also hosted a Power FM billboard at one point.

On the subject of billboards, 2GN had one for many years just north of Marulan on the southbound carriageway (just past Uringalla Creek). I remember it saying ‘1368 AM Stereo’ as late as the early 2000s.

This is from the Mercury, 23 July 1992, the lyrics to one of the WAVE FM jingles. Quite odd!

Here’s a photo of it that I took in 2006.

I do remember i98FM used to have one at Engadine back in the late 90s.

I recall seeing that sign in 2013.

What a joy it was to get a letter from a radio station across the ditch!

A 2 page ad from i98 FM explaining how to retune your radio upon FM conversion in June 1992… don’t see how it needed 2 pages, but anyhow!

And a couple of Top 30/40 Charts.

2WL from 2 March 1989

And 2Day FM from 17 May 1990… Somewhat in keeping with their more adult/album feel, this only had albums, not singles.

From the Illawarra Stereo AM history files. An interesting read.

I must have asked a few questions and Hilton Prideaux very kindly responded with advice on AM stereo modifications. Which was probably all lost on me at the time, as I was just a kid chasing stickers and merch. Nice of him to write back, though I think the second page was just to show off the two-page letterhead stationery.

Carlton supporters may listen to Radio National. Melbourne fans are partial to some ABC Classic FM. St Kilda go for 3RRR. Collingwood of course listen to the FOX.

And Swans fans, well fans of Australia’s team listen to ABC Melbourne. Nice.

Hi everyone,

Just popping in with a quick note. I’ve had promises before which have come to nothing so I’m treading carefully, but someone maybe just maybe is going to help me out financially to re-establish The Frankster Archives. There’s been more material coming in recently, and it’s just sitting there doing nothing.

If this maybe turns into another empty promise, well…I give up. But so far on the surface, it’s looking good.

Will update as soon as I know more. Hopefully this time it’s definite. I’m not gonna be able to re-start it all on my own so the help is appreciated, but I hope it’s not just words this time around.

Bye!

There was a time when Brisbane Car Sound key rings were everywhere. Very confusing at parties throwing them all into the same bowl.

Our version of Strathfield.

Good to see someone saved a few videos from that channel, a shame a lot of it hasn’t resurfaced since the guy running it went scorched earth on them last year

From TRV i also have the launch of 3TT and the end of 1026 AM in Melbourne as a comm frequency two years later. Plus a 6WF ABC 7:45 news theme and open. https://user.fm/files/v2-568117385864f51081eff8c8a7a96f23/Classic%20Hits%203TT%20Launch%20In%20C-QUAM%20AM%20Stereo%20-%20Melbourne%2C%20Australia%20(1988).mp4 https://user.fm/files/v2-8b87b96b480ef1efeabb23a21b079d84/3TT%20Ceases%20Transmission%20On%201026kHz%20In%20C-QUAM%20AM%20Stereo%20-%20Melbourne%2C%20Australia%20(1990).mp4 https://user.fm/files/v2-4a5379c696ca8de808aac44161aa47d3/ABC%20Radio’s%20Majestic%20Fanfare%20News%20Opener%20On%20720%206WF%20-%20Perth%2C%20Australia%20(1991).mp4

Needs to be more mentioning of technical stats on Australian stations, radio and TV.

Of course, by that December they were out of Old HWT Building and in Queensbridge St in South Melbourne.
