Radio History

Yes they were. 3TT message in April 1988 says that they were owned and operated by the Australian Radio Network.

Oh, and here are some 693 to 3AW and 1278 to Magic things: https://user.fm/files/v2-30f0dd599ff85987b92bb2974abab029/Magic_693_to_693_3AW_in_2006.wav https://user.fm/files/v2-783f96e436f7832d2be0c05a98514ced/3AW_to_Magic_1278.wav

Spotted in a Brisbane cafe

I’m guessing someone moved up from Melbourne in the 80s. There was also an Expo 88 sticker further up.

Good find! Now if that had been something like a 2UW ‘I Love Sydney’ sticker it would have been torn off or defaced well before now!

The REB, the Arts Centre and what’s the third one which i can’t see too well?

Not REB.

National Gallery, Arts Centre, Melbourne Concert Hall (Hamer Hall)

I couldn’t see it well. Considering i walked Somer’s Trail and remember the phone box next to the tennis court on Creek Road and remember when Bryan Jon was the main hairdresser at Mitcham, i need to hand in my Melburnian hat.

… and Princes Bridge.

I can see this building from my hotel window

It’s better than Russia, i’ll agree.

Anywhere is better than Russia.

Sorry, I watch a lot of old SNL sketches (“But E.T. was from space!” “Where do you think I come from, sucka?”)

Thank you! I also mourned the loss of The Radio Vault. I wonder what happened to it?

Gosh, the sound of 3LO has changed a lot… Rod McNeil is no Sammy J or Bob and Sharnelle.

I seem to recall several versions of these 3KZ stickers. They were just everywhere when I was a child!

From what I can recall, last year they tried to charge for access. Lasted less than a day. I’m not sure why it closed so quickly but charging for access to material that is not yours, merely digitised and uploaded is probably why.

Poor Rod never fitted into the format. Laid back but not in a Peter Evans way. He got shuffled off to news reading duties after that.

The audio is amazing. So processed. The Optimod was working hard back in those days!

I only vaguely remember Rod McNeil reading the radio news in the mid-1990’s when I was a teenager.

Here’s an ad from The Age in 1986 claiming that his was the “number 1” breakfast radio show in Melbourne (along with AM)… not sure how accurate that was.

Agree, they were all over the place back in the day. Used to be a lot of households had 3KZ stickers on their letterboxes and so on… must have been some sort of competition perhaps?

Yes there were a couple of tram ones that did the rounds as well (also ended up on dog kennels and soapbox cars in Aotearoa). At least 3KZ weren’t encouraging young kids to smoke. As a teenager 3XY sent me matches!
