Radio Data System (RDS)

On my radio, I’m getting the same issue on 2BCR as 2BS – i.e. the RT works, but nothing shows up for the PS:

You should put “TRIPLE M” Sydney as a preset as well.

True! Though the capital lettering differentiates it a bit more, and in car reception is difficult to get consistently here because of ABC News Radio from Muswellbrook.

With 2BCR starting RDS, RDS adoption on the stations I can receive in Sydney has now exceeded 50%, with about 35 frequencies having RDS – considerably more than about a decade ago.

2BCR is a bit of a crock programming wise though… I’d rather see investment in the sound of the station first, then worry about bells and whistles later.

That said, it all comes down to the willingness of people to present on the station, but some community stations don’t help themselves at all by becoming a closed shop. Freeform radio should mean anyone can present anything they want, within reason.

Very interesting.

As of late afternoon & this evening I’ve been trying to get RDS SPY working on my new (old hardware) Win 10 PC…hours later & just in the last 20 mins I’ve got it working… finally.

I have no problem with PS displaying on the basic SDR# program or with SDR-Console v3, but for some reason the character ‘R’ is nulled in the PS, such that only 2BAC is being displayed instead of 2BACR with RDS SPY (RDS analysing software).
RDS Group 0A is the RDS group responsible for sending out the PS characters.
Not surprising identical issue with Win 7 PC with RDS Spy.

Wonder what can be wrong? I can compare with another station later.
Maybe some fill-in character missing after the R, that some receivers don’t like?
Hence the rejection, blanking of PS display.
So odd that the RDS SPY software is also having a “similar” issue with the PS?

I’ve just tried my Sangean portable radio. It displays the full PS.

UPDATE: I’ve analysed the RDS data. 2BACR are sending out a NULL character after the R (ASCII code 0), they should be sending out a SPACE character, ASCII code 32
This is only an issue for the RDS stations that use an odd number of characters in their PS.
2MBS FineMus & 92.9 ABC Classic FM - Classic don’t have this issue.
Both 2MBS & 2ABCFM stations only have 7 characters in their PS, their 8th character CORRECTLY ends with a SPACE character (ASCII code 32)

In your case of 2BS, this is also an odd (3 letter PS code) number of characters.
If the 2BS engineer uses a SPACE character for the 4th invisible character, this will likely fix the problem for them too. Probably incorrectly using a NUL character is causing your car
receiver to reject the entire PS code . That’s my theory.

Solution: Ring the stations & give them my fix & ask them to whom I should send my invoice

How many zeroes will there be on the end of it?

believe it or not, it was me who suggested 2DAY-FM & 2MMM get RDS back in 2000. Surprising they took my email suggestion & did it

I am currently in Bathurst and have noticed the weird RDS on the local stations.

2BS does not display station name but scrolling text “2BS fm- local voices
Pty Current Affairs

BROCK no station name, no scrolling text
Pty Rock Music.

Also of interest 2BS signal into Bathurst CBD seems to be better then BROCK on my portable device with the headphones antenna.
2BS is at maximum signal strength whereas BROCK can drop back to mono.

Is 100.1 Life FM RDS PS displaying okay for you? That’s an odd (7 digit) character length PS.

I was looking at Google Sheets RDS list. BROCK had a PS of B-Rock previously (6 characters).
Probably changed it to BROCK (with possible ASCII NULL character at character 6? instead of space)
Wonder what the PI codes are? Hopefully not a number with leading zero.

Life Fm is decoding correctly.
Current Life Fm RDS-
Life fm
Scrolling test- current playing song
PTY - Talk

BTW signal strength wise Life and BRock are at similar strength, 2BS seems to be the strongest from Mt Ovens.
The ABC’s and the community station are the strongest from the nearby Mt Panorama.

Is SBS on 91.1 out there now?

Works OK on my radio:

It’s not listed on the Google Sheets page, but 2BS also has now playing data.

And as previously mentioned, PS doesn’t show up.

I can’t get B-ROCK at my location in Sydney to check, unfortunately, due to the co-channel.

Wow, that is probably the only Caralis that does this. NEW FM still doesn’t.

And yet B-Rock have now ceased publishing now playing information to their website. 2BS never did after the FM conversion AFAIK

Haha looks like Triple M is on dab on the central coast now? Note the case.

RDS confirmed on 2 Hit WA stations not currently on the Australian RDS list spreadsheet. First Hit Katanning -

With RT - hit94.9 - Hits & Old School and artist / song title.

Then Hit Northam

Not sure if Hit Northam have song information in their RT. This was captured during national Saturday night programming, which we traditionally don’t see song info for here in WA.

Great inland signal propagation on the weekend to receive these. Using a Samsung Galaxy A5 mobile and headphones as the antenna, at a distance of approximately 200km, while remote camping.

I was also able to decode Collie Community Radio PI/PTY on the weekend. Hard station to receive for me at home, despite being only 50km away.
PI 4768
PTY Serious Classical
Dymanic PS remains unchanged -
Collie
Communit
y Radio
