Radio Data System (RDS)

The 2MFM pic

I did a bandscan at Mount Victoria recently and was able to get the following RDS signals:

  • 89.9 - WHCR89.9
  • 90.1 - 2NBC
  • 91.3 - C91.3 FM
  • 92.9 - Classic
  • 93.5 - EAGLE FM
  • 94.1 - Pulse941
  • 94.5 - NO PS (FBi)
  • 94.9 - Power-FM which then faded intoā€¦
  • 94.9 - Rhema.CC
  • 95.3 - smoothfm
  • 96.1 - The EDGE
  • 96.3 - Coast-FM
  • 96.5 - Wave-FM
  • 96.9 - Nova 969
  • 97.7 - SBSRadio
  • 98.1 - i98FM
  • 99.9 - SWR 999
  • 100.1 - Life FM
  • 101.3 - SEA-FM
  • 101.7 - WSFM1017
  • 102.5 - FineMus
  • 102.9 - 2ST
  • 103.2 - Hope1032
  • 103.5 - 1035 FM
  • 103.7 - 2NUR-FM
  • 104.1 - 2DayFM
  • 104.5 - STAR1045
  • 104.9 - TRIPLE M
  • 105.3 - NEW FM
  • 105.7 - triple j
  • 106.5 - KIIS1065
  • 107.3 - 2SER-FM
  • 107.7 - 2GO

2ST and Vox dominated 102.9 and 106.9, so I couldnā€™t get RDS from Hit and MMM Newcastle.

Note: My car radio seems to be unable to get RDS from 2VOX, 2BLU, 2MFM, 2BS and 2CCR.

I donā€™t understand why FBi transmits RDS but doesnā€™t have a PS being broadcast. Surely it wouldnā€™t be that difficult to enable the PS?

Not sure if the hyphen in the 2NUR RDS PS is new or if itā€™s just a typo in the RDS spreadsheet. Hereā€™s the RT as well if someone wants to add it to the RDS spreadsheet:

B-Rock transmits RDS as well, but somehow you couldnā€™t receive it, even at Mt Victoria?

Mind you, when I was in Bathurst in July last year, my brotherā€™s Kia Carnival can detect RDS on B-Rock, but yet is not detected on my Sangean DPR-34, even in a very strong signal area.

Hereā€™s a pic of 2MMM 104.9 spectrum (centre freq + USB of signal) showing the ultra wide bandwidth (of data service??). Spectrum: 104.9 to 105.5MHz. Iā€™ll post a pic of 2DAY for comparison in a moment.

Oh, yes, the indicator for RDS on B-Rock came up, but with interference from FM 99.3, it never decoded.

Hereā€™s the normal bandwidth of 2DAY signal (400kHz). Sometimes for some hours or days 2MMM spectrum shows the same normal BW as 2DAY. Maybe to do with test work or switch between Gore Hill & Artarmon transmitters of 2MMM?

Compare with 2MMM spectrum pic in post above.

I am impressed how good swr is. Great spot to broadcast from. I wonder if it would of been a great spot for 2ka and 2ws as an alternative when converting to FM. 2ka obviously being more directional. Guess the licence area would of needed to change. With a decent power output, my view Penrith would of been better covered than what it is today and perhaps parts of the lower blue mountains too. There might be parts of the upper mountains with issue, but in my view Penrith does not have good enough 96.1 coverage due to the shadow of the lower mountains. Difficult with the one site to cover both Penrith and Katoomba well.

Perhaps a phone call, email or letter & offer of some funds at their next fund raiser might invoke them to fix the issue. Canā€™t be cheap for the station running the power they do on 94.5 & the DAB+ service.

I could not decode RDS from 2BS 95.1 at Oberon today, so either theyā€™re not using it or the injection levels are extremely low. I was only using my pocket DAB radio with its very short whip, though. The injection levels are low on B-Rock as I was only just able to decode its RDS with 3/5 bars.

There is definitely no RDS on 105.5 Oberon. This tx isnā€™t needed in the slightest now; 95.1 is perfect in town.

Whatā€™s 2LT and Move like into Oberon, both from their Katoomba and Lithgow TXs? I hear a lot of Oberon ads on 2LT.

2LT 101.1 is there but it isnā€™t great. It would also suffer splash from 100.9 TAB on poorer radios, likewise with 99.5 and B-Rock.

900 AM is fine, as is 107.9 from Mount Lambie.

Thatā€™s for 2MFM?

In the car on an Sangean handheld - DPR-67, I have and towns further east. Orange RDS too.

Yes, 2MFM, though Iā€™m going to look into it further, seeing as some radios do decode the RDS & some donā€™t.
I thought about it last night, & will try a few things before rebooting the exciter, but may need to discuss this with Nautel?

Ok guys @tvcl in particular, I have a theory on the 2MFM RDS issue & have changed the PI code, if you were having trouble with the RDS on 2MFM, can you try again now.

Iā€™ll test on the work car again tomorrow to see, but some info from others would be helpful.

I can see what youā€™ve done to the PI code change of 2MFM with reference to @tvcl issue & the ā€˜Australian RDS Listā€™.
I too would be very interested to know if that fixes the problem.
I was wondering @RFBurns if you have any contact with 2NSB Chatswood? They use a PI code starting with ā€˜1ā€™ which with some software shows the listening region as the ACT (rather than NSW).

No I donā€™t have any contacts with 2NSB, as they donā€™t transmit from our sites, & donā€™t have any operational contracts with TXA.

Does anyone know the PI code of 2BS or 2BXS?
Not listed in the ā€˜Australian RDS Listā€™ (Google Sheet).

Latest version of SDR Console provides improved PI code detection & RDS program enhancements .

@RFBurns Your theory is correct. That seems to have fixed it and RDS is now showing up:

So it looks like all of the stations that have RDS PI codes starting with 0, my car radio refuses to even detect RDS on. Other stations with this issue are 2CCR, 2BLU, 2OAG, 2GZF and 2VOX. Possibly 2BS also, because my car radio also refuses to decode their RDS. Any chance you have any influence on the RDS broadcasts of these other stations?

Iā€™m guessing the Mitsubishi car radios consider the RDS signal to be invalid because the first digit of the PI code (i.e. the country identifier) is never allocated as being 0 anywhere in the world? Country codes

I wonder if many other radios do this country code validity check in order to decode an RDS signal.
