Radio Data System (RDS)

Awesome!
Can you check for a PTYN & any AF.
I don’t think there was any AF before, but there was a GRP 10, suggesting PTYN in use?

I’ll check tomorrow, 97.5 isn’t that great here, I’ll go into town where i should be able to get a clearer signal and know for sure.

Just a Joke hehe

From a dx tropo opening last night in an arc from Batemans Bay to Goulburn I caught a these couple of Sky Sports Radio outlets (Nowra & Goulburn) with RDS.
These show the AF’s of each station.

(Ignore the data corruption in the PS field)

Thanks, seems a bit pointless though? As in my experience SKY Racing at Batemans Bay has a very limited coverage area, in reality there would be really no overlap between the two and large gaps of coverage in between.

Sorry for poor image, but can confirm no AF and PTYN of “Varied” for 2HD 97.5

Thank you :sunglasses:

Here’s a RDS Screen capture from the TEF’s RDS page of 2SNR 93.3MHz (below).
Noted that they now have CT. Seems accurate enough.

2CCC 96.3 now with CT (below)

It appears that 94.9 Power FM (Nowra) has changed their PTY from Rock to Varied (below). Can anyone confirm?

Radio Lynn is back with RDS

Coast FM has had clock time for ages, it’s been on & off at times, but has been on for many months now & it’s accurate, I make sure of it & only checked it last weekend.

We used to have PTYN, but we took it off 12 months or so ago when we replaced the RDS encoder, I’d put it back but not sure what to put as it’s character limited?

It’s not really Easy Listening but the management don’t like the PTY of Oldies for the Classic Hits format, so that’s probably the closest I can get, as it’s varied programming but not Varied Speech like the RDS standard is supposed to indicate.
ClassicHits is too long for the PTYN.

Reception isn’t normally good enough at home to pull in RDS off Coast FM being squeezed in between Cada & Wave FM, so I’m not often aware of changes unless out on the coast during a favourable tropo duct event. The portability of the TEF & with the v2 firmware might well make it easier in future, although last night JJJ Taree was hammering it hard.

The limiting factor of RDS, particularly PS & PTYN etc back when it was conceived was the limited display technology of the old 7 segment LED displays & data transmission rates. I wonder if RDS2 will take off later this decade. Looking at all the extra power that would be required for the extra subcarriers I wonder if station owners would seriously consider it? Longer PS length is a big attraction though.

I think it was discussed here not too long ago that I think many radio stations use the PTY of ‘Varied Speech’ as a generalized ‘Varied’ descriptive genre, whether it be varied music or varied programming.

BTW I notice in Coast FM’s RT+ that there’s no truncating of text after the artist’s name.
Eg: ‘Chicago on Coast-FM’ or ‘Chicago on Coast-FM 963’
Is that per design, as in what the management wanted?
I think it’s the first time I’ve seen that for a RT+ station.
Could be the TEF isn’t doing it’s RT+ thing correctly, I’m not sure. :man_shrugging:

I have also been thinking that the RT listing on our RDS List for 2CCC might need an overhaul (getting dated), but again I’d need to be localised to do that. Some stations are simple to update RT messages for re the list, others are near impossible to maintain on the list.

Yes, that’s by design, “on Coast-FM 963” is a set tag line always on, if there’s no song title/artist info coming out of Zetta, Classic Hits will be shown in place of song title/artist with “on Coast-FM 963” on the end.

Star104.5 does the same, but not all the time.

We (Coast FM) also have other RT that alternates between the song title/artist RT.

Thanks @Radiohead the RDS List has now been able to be updated with the KIIS/WSFM Standby transmitter & RDS Encoder output settings & data.
I note that both the KIIS & WSFM RT A/B flags are correctly switching on this RDS encoder. :+1:
But on the downside the WSFM is transmitting RDS CT that is ~58minutes slow.
Perhaps something for @RFBurns to check next month?

Also a question for @melb_mateyy0 or @Moe or anyone else in the Melb area with a RDS receiver/SDR. Can anyone confirm the RDS PS of “South Coast FM” 88.1/89.1/89.5
I received a partial PS decode & thinking it might now be something like: ‘SthCoast’ ?

Thanks so much @Rob2144
It may have been an oversight my end that I forgot to update this?
I get busy or distracted

Whilst out earlier this evening I noted that 100.9 Connect FM was transmitting on their RDS RT feed Song Title & Artist messages & it was accurate & updating correctly during their 6-9pm Rock of the 80’s & 90’s program.

However from 9pm with commencement of their Rock n Roll Jukebox program the apparent last song title & artist info from earlier program has frozen.

The station obviously still has some technical problems to address.

Connect FM has two groups of 3 RT messages that are regularly seen:
Group A:

Group B:

These messages update every 20 seconds.

During a tropp opening this morning to Canberra & Goulburn region I managed to capture RDS from GN FM Goulburn. Image posted below.

@Radiohead you might be interested to note, that like the latest RDS capture of 93.5 Eagle FM, there is also no AF pointing to 106.1 GN FM Crookwell.

Be interested to know if any AF exists on the Crookwell outlets of either Eagle FM or GNFM.

UPDATE 1:
During this morning’s DX also manged to capture my first reception of 99.5 AMV Canberra with some whip antenna gymnastics in null of 99.5 2ICE Lithgow & with RDS too. Interesting PI Code revealed here for the first time.

Great work to both of those in Sydney!

Pretty much zero chance for me up here.

Can I ask whereabouts in Sydney are you getting these at?

A high spot in Parramatta Local Gov area.
Any spot high enough with reasonable take off away from trees & buildings in direction of intended reception can be good. That said it was only late last year I was getting 1WAY FM 91.9 with RDS driving the streets of Sydney during a strong tropo opening.
I think the ability to find null spots & strong spots with the portable rx & moving whip antenna about can be advantageous at times vs a fixed antenna at fixed location & sometimes shielding the antenna away from a local or semi bothersome station can help. I was noticing today that actually shortening the 1.4m antenna considerably was helping the reception of some stations, at home inside its often the opposite. I think shorting the telescopic antenna was helping offset the strong signal de-sensitivity effect on the TEF6686 outside from the Artarmon/Gore Hill FM stations?

If I get time I’ll post more RDS pics.
Did have RDS from Hit 93.1 & some Orange stations & the Black Mountain stations including just a little bit of corrupted very weak RDS from 102.3 ABC Classic (has very weak RDS subcarrier).
Did also receive 93.9 Young (no RDS) & Queanbeyan FM stations on 97.5 & 96.7 (no RDS received). Forgot to check for 88.9MHz.
I’ve also updated several of the Canberra FM stations RDS details in the RDS List, just little details here & there. More later…
