So Melbourne doesn’t run it? That’s a cardinal SYN.
Its been nearly a year since I’ve been there, but SYN 90.7 didn’t have RDS then.
I saw that Vintage FM 88.7 had RDS:
Name (Dynamic): Vintage FM
I’m going to guess and say that Nathan Rose from River FM has done their RDS because it has the tell tail corruption of Radio text that all his stations RDS have.
I was driving around and saw the horror of RDS Name that Highland FM is using:
- Highland
- FM Heart
- of the
- High
- lands
- 107.1
I want to dig my eyes out…
That’s been on for a while now I think?
And agree re Highland FM, it is awful! That started at least a month ago, maybe longer?
…
Up here in QLD where I am right now, i see Hot91 Sunshine Coast have changed their PS name now 911HotFM
Triple M Brisbane’s Now Playing info now doesn’t mention the song, just the artist eg Now Playing - David Bowie on 104.5 Triple M
…
And I meant to add some more Sky Racing updates…
Kenpsey 101.5 - no RDS
Grafton 101.5 - SkyRacn RDS as per other stations.
May i ask, what is the name of the program you are using?
Its my Mac SDR software, GQRX.
Hit Bridgetown / Fridgetown 100.5 this morning:
PS Hit100.5
PI 6100
PTY Pop Music
RT Get That Feeling.
I doubt they beat my -7.9 in Bungendore this morning!
You win. 7 (ie +7°) the minimum this morning. Cool by WA standards! WA must be short for Warm Air.
Yeah I don’t think I will ever beat @dxnerd on this point unless I move house or go in holidays in Canada. I think even the UK struggles to get that cold, ![]()
The airmasses over SW WA in winter are actually quite cold, colder on average than in SE Australia. It’s also much wetter in winter than over east. It’s just that you’ve got no towns at a decent altitude to ‘take advantage’ of it. It’s frustrating as if the Australian Alps were over in SW WA, they’d get a shitload more snow. Bluff Knoll at only 1000 m ASL near Albany gets a dusting quite regularly (but it doesn’t hold snow for long as it’s so exposed to wind).
The Bridgetown record is good considering its paltry 200 m of elevation though (-6C). From memory the town is nestled in a valley which explains its propensity for cold nights in the right conditions. Its summer mean minimums are the same as here at 13C, thanks to the proximity to the Southern Ocean and its cool source of air.
Word has it that station management is extremely happy with their current RDS & not subject to external influences…

I’m finding that RDS from Triple J Nambour 89.5 is slightly easier to decode. No need for any enhanced conditions. Still not like what it should be for the signal strength.
I kept an eye out for Triple J RDS on 89.5 when I was up on the Sunny Coast last week. Not a peep.
101FM Logan Shire in southern Brisbane has an unusual Dynamic PS RDS
The vast majority of the time it will sit on 101FM… But once a minute or so the following alternate text will pop up
News on
the hour
They’d be much better putting that in the text line, which currently says Entertaining Logan City for 35 years!!
They also advertise the other programs they show in the PS - it can be very annoying. I agree, just put that in the RT line.
Apparently 96.9 Cooma has added RDS: ‘SkyRacn’.
Can confirm RDS on Sky Racing 90.5 Tamworth & 95.9 Mt Dowe
Modern FM exciters like the the BE units allow you to turn RDS on and just put a static text ID on it such as the station name. Dynamic RDS is problematic for a lot of stations because you may need data connectivity to your transmitter site which lots don’t have. Plenty of broadcasters only have old 850Mhz analog STL’s which don’t have a data channel. There are also external RDS encoders you can buy that put RDS into your onsite stereo generator if you have capability to send MPX to the transmitter site.
For stations that can get data or MPX to the Tx site the radio automation has a plug-in that allows you to send dynamic text like “now playing” to a specific IP address which will be the exciter or RDS encoder. It is very fiddly to get going hence the variability of off-air RDS you see.
