Radio Data System (RDS)

I wonder if one of the options apply re above changes?:

  1. RT+ was a trial
  2. RDS data feed problem
  3. Running on a standby RDS encoder (different RDS settings)
  4. Running on a standby transmitter/encoder/processor combo
    with different RDS settings.

We’ll probably never know.
Thanks for the report

Thanks for the update!

Did RED FM and Spirit ever run any RDS up at Geraldton before they were sold?

Yeah. Been like this since December 24, maybe earlier. From what I’ve heard, Hit and Triple M are statewide 24hrs - no local content. Geraldton may be unmanned at the moment, so there may be a problem further afield.

I’ll keep any eye out for more DX opportunities to compare - Collie, Katanning, Mt Barker or Merredin maybe.

No, RDS only come in after SCA took over. Didn’t note RDS in Carnarvon either when I was local there a year ago, nor Karratha, Port Headland or Broome via Sporadic E.

It was easier to put a static summer message in for all the regionals than to change the show schedules that are integrated into the websites etc while the shows are off

4ZZZ began (resumed after a very long break) RDS on Friday 6 January.

The RDS text has changed each day since, with adaptations on the first message photographed here. So the RDS is being thought of and actively considered.

Would be interesting to hear from the station on the RDS hiatus as their website is well done and catalogues show by show audio (or used to).

Did a DX of 2BS FM and oddly only got Radio Text from them and a blank name:

Mixed RDS in the car just on the Bowral side of The Gib today. Full GNFM RDS appeared a few seconds later.

I wonder if GNFM is using the same RDS PI code as Triple M Central Coast?

RDS capture of 93.3 2BBB Dorrigo.

This station might be misreported as having a static PS of Triple B, but it’s actually Dynamic PS. The PS displays station name most of the time & then quickly displays the following two lines as:
93.3 and
107.3

107.3 2BBB PS has been implemented in identical manner.

It’s probably one of the least distracting/offensive of the Dynamic PS displays.
101.1 4CBL has a similar timing with their Dynamic PS

Back to 2BBB; 107.3 has an AF of 93.3, but 93.3 has no AF, same PI code though.

I was expecting an accompaning :face_vomiting: or a :confounded: or  or

Maybe it’s better than previous no PS? :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

No AF comparing to previous RDS programming.
The PS word messages are flicking through rapidly…

I was nearly going to do that! or add a grrrr!

Yes it’s horrible but like you say, probably better than nothing at all.

Hopefully they’ll see the error of their ways and fix it up.

Also had brief CLASSIC RDS from Canberra earlier.

Great to see this has happened and that 4ZZZ has (re)joined the RDS bandwagon.

Noticed today there did appear to be information about which show was airing, not quite at Artist - Song level but almost better to promote the programmes on a station with such an eclectic schedule. Have also noticed the amusing messages introduced in there as well, so as you say it’s seemingly being done very intentionally.

Also noticed their program type is listed as ‘Easy Listening’, which jarred slightly when they were playing something that sounded like Stone Sour earlier this evening…

Mmm…sounding a lot like ‘Fabuless’ Stone Sour content genre this morning. Great music to wake up to - NOT!
‘Easy Listening’ PTY - Only a lover of expletive laden heavy metal would think so.
Best PTY probably would be an oxymoron label of ‘Culture’
Maybe a better interpretation would be ‘Urban Culture’ of 4ZZZ content?

Noted the station also needs to delete their RDS AF field data. Currently listing 90.8 & 93.9 frequencies.

Well if you compare them to Corey Taylor’s other work with Slipknot, then one might indeed argue that Stone Sour is easy listening

Yeah, not sure which PTY is best. I had thought ‘Varied’ might suit but then it would share a label with the likes of Mix FM Sunshine Coast or Hot Tomato Gold Coast, which perhaps are not directly comparable either.

And on the topic of RDS for Brisbane community stations (I use the term loosely but legally in the latter example), it seems 96five’s RDS hasn’t been operational for a few days now. Unless 4ZZZ pinched it to start theirs? :joy:

@crankymedia Is this switching problem between Triple Z Lismore & Nova Brisbane still happening?

I note that 2ZZZ Lismore has changed its PI code from 2009 to new 2480 (Lismore postcode no.)
Nova Brisbane still has PI of: F106

Can’t see why a RDS tuner frequency switch would occur with either of these PI codes
if the problem is still occurring. :man_shrugging:

You don’t need to bother with that argument; it’s self evident.

An RDS snapshot of 90.3 2PQQ Triple M - North Haven.

I wonder if they’re using a PTYN?

102.1 4ZZZ Brisbane have recently added 102.1 to their RDS Alt Freq data stream output, but still retained the rubbish frequencies of 90.8 & 93.9 (Method A).

Managed to decode part of Pulse FM’s RDS, they are using the same RDS system as River FM (With the same question mark corruption) and the signal is so over modulated (with spikes into the 90.1 and 89.8 bands) so it makes decoding very hard,:
