Radio Data System (RDS)

Harder to get RDS from Breeze Tenterfield now as it is cochannel with Childers so that when there’s a bit of an opening both signals are often improved.

I remember staying in Stanthorpe overnight in 1998 and 2TEN was the only non-ABC FM signal available.*** How times have changed.

(As a 12 year old, I thought they were saying ‘Tent FM’ as Tent= Tenterfield).

It was a great trip that one; just before I got the Internet at home and so all the stations up the New England Highway were unknown to me. I remember just putting the car radio on seek and seeing what was available, discovering stations like FM 92.9, FM 100.3, Gem FM 106.7 and Ten FM. The final destination was Noosa; I knew about B105 etc. but didn’t know about The Heat 96.1.

***On my Walkman at the time.

SUN FM 97.1 was on air in Stanthorpe in early 2000.

I would have thought the Passchendaele Ridge ABCs would have been received.

They probably were there actually, but I was solely looking for commercial and/or music stations that weren’t Triple J. I do remember tuning into Warwick 103.3 and hearing ‘Dr. Worm’ for the first time the next day as I was driving through Warwick itself…which is why I’ll always associate Warwick with that song. I don’t think C FM Warwick was on air. I remember trying for B105 just out of Stanthorpe, but only really got it east of Warwick and it only came through clearly once on the Cunningham Gap. Stock car radios had poor sensitivity back then.

Sun FM definitely wasn’t on air; I would have found that. I remember coming across their website in the early 2000s. What sort of format did they run- general AC? Perhaps this should go in the Radio History thread.

CFM didn’t go to air until 2000.

Got this tonight… in Newcastle!

The M on the end is from not resolving the 2ST FM and Triple M RDS correctly, as it was a noisy signal.

But where is the local Triple M? Incredible reception

It’s mostly there, it’s a very tight null for me to get 2ST. If move the radio around, 95% of the time its Triple M cleanly, 4% you can still hear MMM but with interference, 1% 2ST but noisily.

Triple M Gippsland (3SEA) now appearing as “MMMGipps”. Was previously “Triple M”.

Hopefully the start of a move back to more localised RDS for Triple M stations.

The RDS from Sea FM Gold Coast went back to Hit90.9 this morning, was Sea 90.9

Did they revert to a backup transmitter that is still set to Hit90.9 maybe?

It’s possible… but I would have thought in this day and age it would be done by a remote encoder at the studio

Queue SCA to come out and announce Gold Coast is going back to “Hit90.9”:joy::rofl:

Or since they can’t seem to decide - perhaps a blended name of Sea/Hit… Shit90.9?

Whoa ok guys… I actually tend to like the mix on Sea FM… each to his own I guess.

Its back to Sea90.9 now

It’s not my cup of tea… but it’s OK for what it is.

Just a corny joke on the RDS naming issues

I know. Full disclaimer too, I work with Listnr on podcasts, but that does not cloud my judgement… I like to think I’m unbiased. I think they have really cleaned up the mix in the past few weeks, its still a little predictable but some awesome tunes are making their way in. Wish they would stop milking that Kid Laroi song for all its worth though… Stay… its repeated so many times… but were off topic now…

Did notice the CT time on Juice is now correct and not a day behind on date and an hour ahead on time any more.

I got good enough Canberra reception to check 102.3 ABC Classic RDS… it LOOKS like they have now changed to static PS text… as I only saw Classic text as below, but then in my experience their RDS has been difficult to cleanly decode… @dxnerd might be able to confirm?
