Radio Data System (RDS)

Thanks for that, interesting… does 91.7 have 2ST FM as well?

Star 104.5 doesn’t have any RDS at all today.

Apparently it has been like that since at least last Sunday, as I didn’t get RDS on Star 104.5 at around Campbelltown, even in areas where its signal would be strong enough to receive it.

According to the Hepburn Tropo maps there’s some coastal inversion/tropo
predicted from Thu to Fri from the Illawara to Taree region. Might be an opportunity for someone to check then, unless someone in the Illawara/Nowra region can let us know?

I couldn’t get 91.7 at Killcare Heights today, was partially blocked by the 91.8 pirate.

So yes, I may need to rely on some tropo to find out.

I’d be surprised if they have different RDS to 102.9 however.

Yes noted 91.8 today. But I noted on arrival home, not long ago, that 91.8 has now disappeared. If they stay off for a week some of us might have a chance to try for RDS on 91.7 later in the week.

Me too
That said, someone has tentatively reported in RDS list that 2ST on 91.7 & 106.7 has a PI code of 2917, which might be new. But 102.9 still has the PI code of 202A.
Maybe keeping PI different due to 102.9 having their own morning breakfast program? So I wouldn’t like to put a wager on an identical PS…

Nope, when I checked it yesterday, it still said “2ST”
106.7 is not strong enough in Bowral for RDS.

Star FM’s RDS restored late morning or by midday today.

Re 104.5 Star FM RDS. Well that didn’t last long… their RDS has disappeared again.

@tonks8526 reported on the SEN forum

Anyone have a capture (pic) of their RDS?

PS rotates between “SEN” and “TRACK”. Haven’t seen RT change yet.

Great :+1:
So they’re using Dynamic PS to separate the SEN & Track.
I think when their initial logo or way of having their name appear in branding was to display it as: SENTrack That would have fitted the 8 character PS display. It’s one reason for my SEN RDS curiosity
Seams like SEN, at some point in time, later decided to display name as: ‘SEN Track’ with station name branding & appearance, looking at their website.

Not too many vehicles show the PTY, which I assume the ‘Sport’ label is - nice to see.
I wonder if any vehicles here in Australia are using the RDS PTYN feature?

I’m also pondering if SEN Track 91.9 will use an AF of 91.3 when Leongatha comes on air?

Mine doesn’t usually show the PTY, but it does let you choose a PTY and then it displays a list of stations with that PTY:

Following on from the post above & recent post by @Dani-Chan re 2ST 91.7

I can confirm that 91.7 2ST is using a different PI code to 102.9 2ST Bowral.
RDS of 91.7 captured yesterday during a tropo lift.

RT also gives their website address.

SWR 999 (99.9 FM) has lost its RDS & its fidelity.
Perhaps using a standby exciter atm???
The stereo pilot carrier is also extremely low.
Many receivers will have trouble detecting stereo from this transmission.
Hopefully the problem is resolved soon.

I like this display, with frequency and RDS. What radio/vehicle is it? @tvcl

That’s just the back up “tape” (it’s actually MP3 on a CF card) at the tx site. There was a power issue at the studio overnight. I’m actually down the coast at the moment.

RDS and processing/Mpx comes up the STL from the studio so is dropped if the back up is activated.

101.7 WSFM only broadcasting the one RDS RT message lately:-
“101.7 WSFM , Sydney’s Pure Gold, WS FM101.7”
Apparently no longer sending CT (Clock Time), group 4A data.

Also KIIS 106.5 only broadcasting 0A, 2A & 4A CT group messages.
No usual group 3A or 8A Suna Traffic Data (TMC).
CT still stuck on Daylight Saving Time.

Are the ARN stations under maintenance @RFBurns ?

SBS 97.7 still on inaccurate AEDST re RDS CT.

ARN Sydney RDS is kinda under maintenance, they’re about to change/replace all their RDS equipment & operations from what I’ve heard.
Because of the SUNA traffic, the ARN RDS operations was all outsourced, then the data sent to the encoders at the transmitter sites & I don’t think they’ve been happy with it like that for a while as they can’t change anything fast, it all has to be managed from outside the station, but I don’t know if they’re bringing it in-house or just getting a better RDS operations manager?

I think it’s been planned for a while, but the final nail may have been the KIIS DAB+ “RDS” (even though it’s not called RDS on DAB+), was scrolling WSFM info for some time, the other week.

Interesting thanks for that info. Hopefully ARN achieve a good solution in the near future. I wonder in the case of SCA (Sydney) RDS (FM) if all internal (or outsourced)? Both their Sydney FM stations using external SUNA & HERE traffic TMC data & both always seam to manage to do the DST (RDS CT) changes seamlessly.
