ABC celebrates 20 years of Conversations with an anniversary collection

The ABC’s most loved and long-running podcast, Conversations marks a major milestone this year, celebrating two decades of unforgettable storytelling with the release of the Conversations 20th Anniversary Collection.

For 20 years, Conversations has invited listeners to spend an hour in someone else’s life – sharing stories from the famous, the unknown, the brave, the brilliant, and quietly extraordinary. Hosted by Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski, the program has become a touchstone for thoughtful, respectful and deeply human storytelling.

To mark the occasion, longtime host Richard Fidler said: “In 20 years of Conversations, it feels like we’ve met every kind of person under the sun. These 20 shows contain some of those stories that have truly astonished, disturbed and delighted us over two decades. These people were such a pleasure to speak with and hear from.”

Conversations cohost Sarah Kanowski agrees: “I was a listener who loved the show long before joining. I remember being at home with babies, just gripped by stories that I didn’t expect to be gripped by. You knew it was going to be compelling and unexpected.

“I feel that we offer a refuge – this little island where you just know whoever is going to be spoken to is going to be treated with respect. And that is something rare, and worth celebrating.”

The 20th Anniversary Collection features compelling interviews recorded between 2006 and 2024, highlighting a diverse array of voices and experiences, refreshed with new introductions from Richard and Sarah.

From Brisbane-born songwriter Mike Chapman to Judy Sharp, mother of artist Tim Sharp, and trauma-informed dentist Sharonne Zaks. It also includes insights from journalist and war correspondent Michael Ware, kangaroo rescuer Chris ‘Brolga’ Barns, marine ecologist and seaweed entrepreneur Pia Winberg, and well-known celebrities Jennifer Saunders, Alan Alda, and Bryan Brown—alongside many more unforgettable voices.

The first five episodes of the Conversations 20th Anniversary Collection are available now on the ABC listen app, with new episodes published daily throughout August.

Mushroom Case Daily team continue their court reporting with ‘The Case Of’ podcast

Given the success of the Mushroom Case Daily podcast with the Australian public, which attracted more than 11 million downloads and garnered over 8,300 letters for the Q&A section of the podcast, ABC has decided to continue its court reporting via The Case Of podcast, available on ABC listen now, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Hosted by the Mushroom Case Daily host Stephen ‘Stockie’ Stockwell, the twice weekly podcast will be your eyes and ears inside the courtrooms of Australia’s biggest trials. Continuing with a similar crime procedural format, The Case Of podcast will see Stephen and ABC’s court reporters recapping trials, explaining legal processes, and unpacking the most interesting details of the cases behind the headlines. Listeners will learn about how the court system works in each state and be invited to ask the court reporters their burning questions along the way. From the minute ‘What do jury’s get served for lunch?’ to the bigger questions ‘How circumstantial can your circumstantial evidence be?’

Beginning with the case of celebrity crocodile wrangler Matt Wright in Darwin’s Supreme Court, The Case Of episodes will release every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.

Mr Wright is facing charges relating to an alleged cover-up, following a fatal helicopter crash during a crocodile egg collecting mission. The crash, which was in Arnhem Land three years ago, killed Mr Wright’s close friend and co-star Chris “Willow” Wilson.

During Matt Wright’s trial, in each episode, host Stephen Stockwell will recap the key events in court with reporter Olivana Smith-Lathouris, and reporter Matthew Garrick for further insights and analysis.

The Case Of is available now on the ABC listen app or wherever you get your podcasts.

Production credits: Host and supervising producer, Stephen Stockwell. Reporters Olivana Smith-Lathouris and Matthew Garrick. Executive Producer, Clare Rawlinson. Commissioning Executive Producer, Tim Roxburgh. Manager, Audio Studios, Eric George.

Booty and the Beasts podcast was launched yesterday (August 18).

A Beauty and the Beast for RWNJs and the cookers.

Nothing but Liberal party sympathisers.

No thanks.

YouTube rockets as a podcast listening platform, Apple falls behind

Australians are increasingly using platforms designed primarily for other experiences to listen to podcasts, according to new survey research.

Podpoll 25 is an annual survey of Australian listening habits, delivered by podcast house Deadset Studios and analytics firm Insightfully.

The survey took a nationally representative online poll of 3,768 participants aged 15 and over, which identified 1,638 of them as regular podcast listeners. These regular listeners were asked 33 questions about their podcast habits. This is the third year they have conducted the survey.

Apple Podcasts has fallen from favour as the premier podcast channel, with just one-fifth of Australians using the platform to listen to podcasts.

In contrast, 58% of respondents use Spotify to listen, and 44% use YouTube. (The respondents could select multiple listening platforms).

How pathetic.

I know.

Beauty and the Beast’s format requires a diversity of views. And a entertaining, loveable arsehole of a Beast.

That’s what made Stan Zemanek a great Beast. And the Beuaties back then had a diversity of views.

This one is a Liberal Party echo chamber. That won’t work long term. Or at all.

This just in: News bulletins are the latest podcast trend

The humble news bulletin — a staple of live radio that pre-dates TV — has become the latest podcast listening trend, as short bite-sized blasts from Sky News, the ABC, SBS, and The Squiz flood the upper reaches of July’s Podcast Ranker.

ABC News Top Stories is the second most-listened-to Australian podcast in the country, according to Triton’s podcast ranker.

Each episode runs for around two minutes, and there are roughly 12 published each day. Between them, they pull an audience of 837,869 listeners, although when you look at the download numbers (3.3m), it averages out to around 8,700 downloads each episode.

Sky News Australia Updates crashed into #5 on the chart for July, with 94 three-to-four-minute episodes pulling 797,917 downloads (8,488 each episode) – with 446,257 listeners across the month.

Mushroom Case Daily, Australia’s number 1 true crime podcast, continued to grip listeners throughout July placing it at number 4.

ABC Kids podcasts also performed well in July. After releasing new episodes from late June, beloved family favourite Dino Dome is up 98 places to #185, making it the most popular podcast developed for children on the list.
