COST OF LIVING SECRETS

SBS News’ Cost of Living Secrets podcast returns to tackle one of the key issues of the Federal Election campaign

How much can you stretch the Aussie dollar? Thinking of starting a side hustle? What kind of financial planners are out there, and do you even need one?

SBSNews Presenter and Finance Editor Ricardo Gonçalves and journalist Peggy Giakoumelos uncover more ways you can save as the cost of living becomes a hot topic in the upcoming Federal Election. In the new season of Cost of Living Secrets,* each episode features one guest expert sharing valuable insights.

From subscriptions to insurance, side hustles to financial planning, and much more, Giakoumelos and Gonçalves sit down with the experts to learn more about the strategies used to get you to spend more, and more importantly, what you can do to spend less.

“Inflation may be easing, but that doesn’t mean that it is down. In fact, prices are still higher than where they were a year ago. That’s why it’s still important to make sure consumers are armed with as much information as possible about how they can make their dollar stretch further,” said SBS News Presenter and Finance Editor Ricardo Gonçalves.

“I’m excited to share Season 2 of the Cost of Living Secrets podcast, as Peggy Giakoumelos and I speak with experts in their field about the simple things everyone can do to save money, in an easy–to-understand way.”

SBS Journalist Peggy Giakoumelos said, “Like lots of people I struggle to manage simple things, like forgetting to cancel a subscription when I no longer need it. Side hustles for additional income are also becoming more common – but there are gender differences with women less likely to charge people appropriately for their services.”

The six-part series features one expert per episode to explore the simple ways Australians can save money on life’s essentials. In the opening episode, Giakoumelos and Gonçalves explore the best ways to promote a side hustle and what you should be charging, with Amanda Rose, founder and CEO of Western Sydney Women.

Former AFL stars Shane Crawford and Lance Franklin are launching a new footy-focused podcast, The Buddy and Shane Show. Recorded weekly on the Gold Coast, the first episode will be released on Tuesday, April 22, with subsequent episodes coming out every Monday on all podcast platforms and YouTube.

Season 2 of The Truth about Amy podcast was launched today. Reporter Alison Sandy said following season one of the podcast, WA Police reopened the investigation into Amy Wensley’s 2014 death and updated the brief of evidence for the Director of Public Prosecutions to consider.

The producers of the show, which is watched or listened to by an audience of more than a million people in Australia and around the world, received a legal letter from the BCCI and the IPL over the weekend, demanding the removal of photos and logos from hundreds of videos on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and X.

According to a source with knowledge of confidential discussions, the legal notice was related to claims that Grade Cricketer IPL videos featured still photography shots from the tournament that the BCCI considered to be used for “commercial” rather than “editorial” purposes.

All images taken of IPL matches and distributed globally by Getty and other companies carry a warning that they may only be used for “editorial use – strictly no commercial use”.

It’s the case that’s captured the attention of the world.

Rune Pedersen unpacks How Humans Talk in new SBS Audio podcast

Ever caught yourself using baby talk with your pet and wondered why? Or curious about why babies babble, or the science and psychology behind swearing?

Host Rune Pedersen, of the award-winning podcast The Idiom, returns with another linguistic series diving headfirst into the intricacies of human communication. How Humans Talk explores how the way we speak shapes our place in the world and why becoming a better communicator starts with becoming a better listener.

“It’s been over a year since I last jumped behind the mic to talk all things linguistics. Fatherhood has shrunk my vocabulary to a handful of daycare-proof words,” says host Rune Pedersen with a wink, “but it’s also inspired me to dive deeper into human communication. As AI begins to automate language itself, it feels more important than ever to explore what makes our conversations unmistakably human. This is my answer to this development.

“In How Humans Talk we’re joined by communication specialists, cultural commentators, and other experts to learn and share how to be a better communicator, whether it’s to your doctor, parents, neighbour or even your furry friends. Together we uncover the subtle ways our words shape identities, relationships, and the world around us.”

Guided by speech pathologist and voice expert Dr Sarah Lobegeiger de Rodriguez, Rune rings in the first episode by exploring the untapped power of the human voice and why it’s often overlooked as a core part of our identity and relationships. Then, Rune chats with Dory Wang who, after being a TV presenter in China, had to start from scratch in Australia, armed with just a handful of vegetable names and some pleasantries. Together, they discuss the emotional and social complexities faced by multilingual speakers – from battling accent biases to rethinking what belonging truly means.

Rune is also on a mission to understand the power and pleasure of profanity* with an explosive episode that reveals swearing is much more than just colourful language. With insight from renowned linguist Professor Kate Burridge from Monash University, the episode examines the psychology and sociology of swearing – breaking down the bad words, from Aussie larrikin slang to ancient blasphemies, and exploring the science behind profanity as pain relief.

How Humans Talk launches today with weekly episodes.

How Humans Talk is a new eight-part podcast series hosted by Rune Pedersen and developed in collaboration with Stefan Delatovic—both part of the team behind the award-winning series The Idiom, which secured Gold in Limited Series & Specials – Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the 2023 Signal Awards.SBS is celebrating 50 years of storytelling and delivers podcasts in over 60 languages. 9NEWS QUEENSLAND’S THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE PODCAST

WINS GOLD AT NEW YORK FESTIVAL RADIO AWARDS

The powerful investigative podcast The Ultimate Sacrifice, from 9News Queensland and 9Podcasts, has won the prestigious Gold Award for Best Narrative Documentary Podcast at the internationally recognised New York Festival Radio Awards.

Presented by 9News Queensland’s Melissa Downes, with Jessica Lodge executive producer, sound design and editing by Adam Buncher, technical production by Matt White, and creative direction by Sam Stove, The Ultimate Sacrifice explored the harrowing events of Australia’s first Christian terrorist attack, an ambush that led to the murder of two young police officers and an innocent civilian.

This gripping series delved into the complexities of religious extremism, the trauma of frontline responders, and the evolving investigation, culminating in revelations from a live Coronial Inquest. This made it one of the first Coronial Inquests to be documented and covered in real-time podcast format in Australia.

Following the landmark success of their internationally acclaimed podcast debut Hannah’s Story, The Ultimate Sacrifice podcast marks the second smash hit from Melissa Downes, Jessica Lodge and Adam Buncher.

In a joint statement, Downes and Lodge said: “On behalf of the team, we are incredibly proud and humbled to have had the opportunity to tell this story.

“In a media landscape that often moves quickly and forgets too soon, we poured our time and care into crafting a detailed, emotionally sensitive and comprehensive account. To see this being recognised on a global stage is an incredible honor.”

Managing Director of Nine Radio, Tom Malone said: “This international recognition for The Ultimate Sacrifice is a powerful reminder of how podcasting can bring critical stories to life. Melissa, Jessica and the team have delivered an extraordinary investigation, not only breaking new ground as one of the first podcasts to follow a Coronial Inquest in real-time, but doing so with exceptional care and integrity.

“Once again, the collaboration between 9News and 9Podcasts proves to be a force, combining world-class journalism with the storytelling power of audio to deliver impact that truly resonates.”

Following in the footsteps of Hannah’s Story, which supported Sue & Lloyd Clarke’s campaign for Hannah’s Law and is now being used in domestic violence training programs across the country, The Ultimate Sacrifice continues the team’s mission to share stories that not only inform but create lasting change.

The Ultimate Sacrifice soared to the top of the Spotify charts in Australia, holding the #1 spot for over a month, and has 1.6 million downloads and counting.

ABC podcast Spies in the Outback takes top gong in New York

Alice Springs journalist Alex Barwick is the host of award winning podcast Expanse Series 3: Spies in the Outback.

ABC podcast Expanse Series 3: Spies in the Outback, hosted by Alice Springs journalist Alex Barwick, has won the top gong at the New York Festivals Radio Awards.

Announced today at the gala ceremony, Spies in the Outback won gold and Expanse Series 4 Uncropped is a finalist in the documentary / history category.

The prestigious Awards celebrate creative storytellers from across the globe and recognise exceptional quality in broadcast audio content. The Grand Jury chose the podcast series from a field of thousands of entries across six continents.

The story starts in the Cold War era and examines the secretive US/Australian defence base Pine Gap, hidden in Barwick’s back yard of Alice Springs.

Barwick, who pitched the winning audio concept to the ABC, has been a reporter in the region for 17 years. She says she wanted to tell a story from regional Australia that would capture the imagination of a global audience.

“Working with an incredible team – Piia Wirsu, Grant Wolter and Elsa Silberstein, and led by our Executive Producer Blythe Moore, we were able to explore just how significant Pine Gap is in the Australia/US defence relationship,” Barwick says.

“It was important to tell the history of Pine Gap and how it’s shaped my town with care, while also examining what role it may have played in past and present global conflicts.”

EP Blythe Moore: “The ABC’s strength and its point of difference is that we have boots on the ground in some of the most remote and far-flung places in Australia.

“We couldn’t have told this story for a global audience without Alex’s extensive experience reporting for ABC Alice Springs, her incredible local contacts and connection to the community, and her doggedness to understand what is going on at Pine Gap. That’s what took this investigation to a whole other level.”
