Seven releases second true crime podcast: Pendulum

From the creators of one of Australia’s most talked about podcasts, The Lady Vanishes , 7NEWS has released its second true crime investigation Pendulum .

Pendulum is a Seven Studios production delving into the mysterious death of Margaret Kirstenfeldt four decades ago.

Margaret was a vibrant young woman with plenty of friends. She was a daughter, sister, wife and a mum to two small children. On the evening of February 10 1978, the body of the 21-year-old was found by a teenage motorcyclist on a neighbour’s lawn in the tiny Queensland town of Sarina. Her throat had been slashed, she was stabbed, there were signs of sexual interference and her dress was bunched around her hips.

It’s now been 41 years since Margaret’s death and the circumstances remain a mystery. Expert opinions have swung wildly and now the pendulum is swinging again - from murder to suicide and back again. This true crime cold case has baffled those closest to her. Could a killer still be on the run?

Margaret’s brutal death is the focus of a 20-month investigation by Seven’s multi-award winning Brisbane news team - 7NEWS crime editor Paula Doneman , producer and writer Sally Eeles and audio producer Marc Wright to help Margaret’s mother and siblings search for answers.

7NEWS crime editor, Paula Doneman , said: “Margaret’s family have relived a devastating chapter in their lives in the hope that the truth that has eluded them for 41 years, will finally be within their reach.”

Pendulum is available through ACAST or your preferred podcast platform.

I tried listening to Pendulum today however it was terrible in execution and just incredibly boring. I wanted to keep listening to see if it got any better but I ended up turning it off about 10 mins before the first episode finished.

The Lady Vanishes has also got incredibly boring and drawn out of late with no new episodes or information and just the conversations available to listen to, they should have just paused it and resumed when they had some actual news to share.

At least The Lady Vanishes is having some results with NSW Police reopening the case.

ABC’s Unravel True Crime podcast - Season 4

Season 4 of ABC’s Unravel True Crime podcast investigates a globetrotting love fraud.

Releases Tuesday 03 September on the ABC listen app or wherever you get your podcasts.

Enter the murky, spurious world of love fraud, as ABC’s award-winning true crime podcast, Unravel returns with a new season and host, triple j’s Ollie Wards .

In 2006, Ollie’s brother Greg was backpacking in London when he fell head-over-heels in love with fast-talking, charismatic Californian, Lezlie Manukian.

They set up a new life in New Zealand, but only months after their showy wedding, things turned sour. Lezlie vanished from Greg’s life leaving his family in financial ruin, having lost their business, family home and life savings.

Now, Ollie Wards is on a mission to get to the bottom of the con that cost his family everything.

In Snowball , season four of ABC’s Unravel True Crime podcast, Ollie finds himself gathering breadcrumbs of evidence and clues dotted across the globe, following a path of destruction left by Lezlie as she collects and then casts off her victims.

From London to Auckland, Sydney to California – plus a tipoff from Hawaii’s Maui police in between – the investigation is a rollercoaster of baffling twists and turns.

The world of Lezlie Manukian is full of wild dreams, a lavish lifestyle, big loves and broken promises in exotic locations — a hall of mirrors made with fake documents and fantasy personas.

As we learn more about the con woman; her history of manipulation, half-truths and elaborate fictions, Ollie comes to a realisation that the only way to get answers is by tracking down Lezlie Manukian herself.

Follow the investigation to unravel the truth behind this story of deception. Understand how and why con artists weave their webs and scam victims the world over.

Featuring theme music from Aussie electro-pop outfit Flight Facilities, Unravel True Crime: Snowball releases Tuesday 03 September on the ABC listen app, Apple Podcasts , Google Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

ABC Podcast Survey reveals just how engaged podcast audiences are

The ABC’s 2019 Podcast Survey presented at Australia’s premier podcast industry conference OzPod today revealed essential findings for Australian podcasters on how to reach more listeners.

Cath Dwyer, Acting ABC Head of Distribution, said “The OzPod conference is all about bringing the Australian podcasting industry together, and sharing expertise, insights and approaches to creating content which reaches and resonates with audiences. As Australia’s leading podcast producer, the ABC is excited to share the results of our latest Podcast Survey with the wider industry.”

The survey revealed that Australian podcast listeners are very engaged. For those who listened to a podcast in the previous week, an average of six podcast episodes were listened to.

However, when it comes to choosing podcasts they have declared they are inundated with choice. The research shows that 1 in 2 podcast listeners (51%), claim to be overwhelmed by the increasing choice of podcasts available in a growing marketplace.

The ABC podcast survey, completed by more than 2, 500 podcast listeners, also offered the following insights into podcast listeners and their behaviour:

  • Podcast listeners also revealed they prefer original content rather than catch-up radio podcasts, with the majority (76%) of episodes listened to in the past month being original podcasts
  • Podcast listeners continue to be driven by audio that entertains, teaches or informs them
  • Comedy podcasts appeal more to a younger audience (14 – 34) while Society and Culture and Health and Lifestyle appeal more to an older audience (55+)
  • Word of mouth is the number 1 means of discovering new podcasts. But when choosing between options, listeners are most motivated to try new podcasts from the Episode Descriptions (including Headline, 71%) and Recommendations (70%)
  • ‘At Home’ remains the most common location for podcast listening (76%), although a large proportion of podcast listeners aged between 14 – 34 are listening to podcasts while they are out and about.
