Trailblazers: SBS’s new vodcast series chronicles African-Australian migrants making their mark
In celebration of International Day for People of African Descent on 31 August, SBS presents a new five-part video series showcasing the inspiring stories of African migrants as they forge unique paths in Australia.
From sharing their first impressions of Australia to offering valuable advice for future generations, SBS presents a new vodcast series that showcases the inspiring journeys of African migrants, highlighting their triumphs and challenges as they establish themselves in business, entertainment and other industries across Australia.
Trailblazers has been crafted to support the growing number of young African migrants settling in Australia who speak a range of languages alongside English, as identified by the latest Census data. The bespoke series joins SBS’s slate of regular audio programs in languages spoken across Africa, including Amharic, Arabic, Dinka, French, Oromo, Portuguese, Somali, Swahili and Tigrinya.
Hosted and produced by journalist Sharon Masige, who emigrated to Australia from Uganda 20 years ago, the series explores the diverse experiences that have shaped the lives of African migrants in Australia. Masige also shares reflections on her own journey, offering valuable insights and advice to the next generation of migrants eager to build a life in Australia.
“With this series, I wanted to capture both the rewarding and challenging aspects of life in Australia, sharing stories that will inspire and encourage new migrants,” said Masige.
“Why the title ‘Trailblazers’? Well, forging a unique path is never easy, especially when it challenges family and community expectations. Achieving success on this journey not only paves the way for others, but also motivates the next generation of African migrants who are curious about the opportunities in Australia.”
“This series is important to me as there were some things I wish I had known before moving to Australia. Now, I’m honoured to share advice for others on their journey and am excited for what the next generation of African migrants will bring to Australia.”
The five episodes feature talks with:
- Community engagement manager Wanyika Mshila from Kenya, who built a career in the Australian arts and theatre industry;
- Founder of Sydney’s Little Lagos Ade Adeniyi from Nigeria, who turned his vision for his homeland cuisine into a reality in the Australian restaurant industry;
- Dancer and choreographer Lucky Lartey from Ghana, who is at the forefront of intercultural dance practices in Australia;
- Business entrepreneur Alies Bol from Sudan who brought the richness of African prints to Australia’s activewear industry; and
- Actor, writer and producer Belinda Jombwe from Uganda, who is making her mark in the Australian entertainment industry.
The series is hosted and produced by Sharon Masige, with an all African-Australian crew.
Trailblazers is available now on YouTube and SBS.com.au.

Seven’s true crime podcast The Truth About Amy sparks key development
The Seven Network’s gripping 7NEWS true crime investigation series The Truth About Amy has led to a major development, with the family of Amy Wensley launching a petition calling for her case to be referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) following mounting evidence challenging the original police investigation that ruled the 24-year-old’s death a suicide.
The petition comes ahead of the launch of the 12th episode of The Truth About Amy podcast on Monday, 9 September. The podcast has reached #1 in Australia on the Apple podcast chart and surpassed 700,000 downloads since its launch in June.
Produced by award-winning Seven journalists Alison Sandy and Liam Bartlett, The Truth About Amy reopens the case of the shocking death of the mother-of-two in 2014. Her lifeless body was found in her bedroom in Serpentine, Western Australia, with a gunshot wound to the head.
The groundbreaking podcast series has reignited interest in the case, highlighting details that Amy’s family believes support their call for justice and uncovering several major developments including new evidence to suggest that Amy’s death was not suicide. The series has also prompted WA Police to announce a dedicated new team to re-investigate Amy’s case.
Alison Sandy said: “Upon first hearing of Amy’s case, we knew she had been denied justice. What we didn’t know is how badly she had been let down by authorities and how much evidence was out there that Amy didn’t kill herself.
Seven Network Director of News and Current Affairs and Seven West Media Editor-in-Chief, Anthony De Ceglie, said: “The Truth About Amy is a gripping true story with so many questions still to be answered. The team working on this long-running investigation have been tireless in their efforts to uncover the facts in this case, and I commend them on these latest developments.
“Amy’s story represents a much broader issue which demands national focus. Through our unwavering commitment to impactful journalism and the power of our multi-platform reach across digital, broadcast and print, the case is getting the critical attention it deserves.”
Following the release of the latest podcast episode on Monday, The Truth About Amy will shift to Weekly Conversations editions from September 16, featuring new developments, guest interviews and extensive coverage of an upcoming court hearing involving Amy’s former partner.
All episodes have been supported by editorial coverage across the breadth of Seven West Media’s broadcast, print and digital platforms including 7NEWS, 7NEWS Spotlight, Sunrise, The Morning Show, The West Australian, PerthNow, 7NEWS.com.au and The Nightly.
The petition, launched by Amy’s aunt Anna Davey, seeks to gather enough signatures to compel the ODPP to reexamine the investigation and ensure those responsible are held accountable. Details can be found here.
