Paris 2024 Olympic Games break BBC Sport record with 218 million streams

In addition to the extensive live coverage available on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website, BBC One enjoyed consistently high viewing figures throughout the duration of the competition.

BBC Sport’s coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was streamed a record-breaking 218 million times online, more than doubling the Tokyo Olympic Games total of 104m, with 12.2m people signed in to BBC iPlayer accounts to watch coverage.

In addition to the extensive live coverage available on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website, BBC One enjoyed consistently high viewing figures throughout the duration of the competition with a Total TV reach (15 mins or more) of 36.1m watching Paris 2024 on BBC TV, 59% of the UK population and a peak of over 6m on 14 separate days.

With the BBC showing every Team GB medal moment live during an electrifying two weeks, the coverage brought the nation together and to the edge of their seats in their millions.

Keely Hodgkinson’s win in the women’s 800 metres final was the most watched event with 9.1m viewers watching the golden moment on BBC One and iPlayer, followed closely by Adam Peaty’s silver medal winning swim in the men’s 100m with 8.5m. 8.4m watched Noah Lyles win Gold in the men’s 100m whilst 7.9m watched Gabby Thomas win Gold in the women’s 200m.

Elsewhere this weekend, 7.3m watched Katarina Johnson-Thomson claim her first Olympic medal whilst 7m watched the closing ceremony on BBC One last night where audiences witnessed the Olympic flame go out in Paris and the flag passed on to LA for the Olympic Games in 2028.

The BBC Sport social media accounts were front and centre in Paris to bring all of the very latest medal moments and behind the scenes interviews to followers, with a staggering figure of over 730m clip views across the 17 days.

Over 28 million unique users and 8.9m signed in accounts used the BBC Sport website and app for the latest news and updates from Paris with 62.2 million online requests for highlights clips. On BBC Sounds, Radio 5 Live had 3.2 million digital streams across 200 hours of coverage.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, says: “The Paris 2024 Olympic Games during this remarkable summer of sport has seen some truly incredible medal moments and we have witnessed a host of new sport stars emerge on an international level. With world-class on-air performances and production, BBC Sport has been there to champion the athletes and to take the audience on a journey across multiple sporting disciplines. It is not an easy job, but these figures across digital, linear, online and audio demonstrates that BBC Sport’s unique multiplatform offer is capable of uniting the nation with the very best of British storytelling.”

A supercut of Andrew Cotters’ BBC commentary of the Closing Ceremony. IMO the best sports commentator around at the moment (he does rugby, tennis, athletics and golf) and widely praised for bringing more of a Eurovision style tone to the closing ceremony too. You may know him from Olive and Mabel.

ONGOING: The ticker-tape parade is now ongoing for Team Philippines’ successful participation in the 2024 Paris Games.

The parade is organized by the Philippine Government through the Presidential Communications Office and Radio-TV Malacanang.

Here is the official stream of the ticker-tape parade from government media.

Other networks are also covering the parade:

ABS-CBN

GMA Network

PTV (state broadcaster)

Even the AP also has a live feed of the parade.

Interestingly, TV5, one of the official broadcasters, is just mirroring the official Government feed.

Press Release from Cignal TV on their “successful” Paris Olympics 2024 Coverage

Cignal brought the excitement and drama of the competition across the nation and beyond. Through its extensive reach and innovative technology, Cignal ensured that every passionate sports fan could cheer for their countrymen and experience the thrill of the competition.

“We are glad that we were able to deliver this historic event and enrich the lives of Filipinos,” said Cignal TV president and CEO Jane Jimenez-Basas.

“We will continue to do our part to foster a sense of national pride through sports,” she added.

Translated Quotes from Carlos Yulo, PH double gold winner

“Thank you Cignal for bringing the games and showing to the entire Philippines our matches, competitions, and our training camps”

On what his victory means for every Filipino, Yulo said: “For me, that is our hope, we should not lose hope even with the difficult challenges of life. We should continue our dreams. Its okay to fall down, as we learn from these things"

“You will never lose on life experiences. Its all about the learning that we get and experience, and of course, I want to thank god that he never forgets us. He gave us this type of talent, and this opportunity to show the world that you have this talent, and with this talent, you can inspire more people. Our win is the win of every Filipino”

MY TAKE: Yes, Cignal TV could have been more successful if they were able to spend more on a studio setup and sending more commentators in Paris than doing things off-tube.
