Paris Olympics - International Coverage

By which you mean lazy?

The FTA channel should be completely seperate, not a cobbled-together mess… it really shows they don’t care. They’re running it only as a means to channel viewers to Sky platforms… which hardly aligns with their often said marketing blurbs about all they do for sport in NZ.

Try watchinging only SkyOpen tonight, if you can bear it. You’ll see how frustrating it is to watch.

I more meant in terms of why they were providing that feed, but I take your point.

I don’t think I will watch…usually just watch the direct feeds on Sky. But I also remember the awful ad-filled experience TVNZ used to offer too, with a lot of delayed or irrelevant sports. They were just lucky that was in a largely pre/primitive internet age

Love the CBC Theme used each games in Canada and they’ve had some great intros over the years but this doesn’t seem to be one of them, unless there is also a longer version.

I agree with you on the border, it might make sense on Sky Gold, but would be better implemented by a red-button feature or something… it doesn’t need to be there permanently.

Do you think they need to be more upfront with timings and what they plan to show us? I found it uncohesive, especially when they showed the Emma Twigg “Road to Paris” segment… I mean, we’re there now, show us what’s happening!

I caught a brief bit of the morning highlights package… man those two need to lay off the early morning coffee’s. I’d like the presentation to be a bit more adult (but not in the sense of the opening ceremony with the naked Papa Smurf!), just a lot less Crowd Goes Wild, and more, dare I say it, Eric Young.

The highlights later on this morning were better executed. There were the odd scenic shot that could have been edited out, to show us more action, but that’s probably up to the whim of the French directors and the poor buggers splicing it all up for us overnight!

Finally, the live bug was showing for things that weren’t always live. A little misleading, really.

Apologies for photo of my TV, but NBC Prime Time coverage showing the back of Ian Thorpe (and 9’s coverage)

Also, different IOC graphic than the 9 broadcast

About 29m total viewers in the US across NBC for the Opening Ceremony yesterday, well up on Tokyo 2020 (bad time zone for them and COVID) and also Rio 2016:

Rio was tape-delayed by an hour

I gotta be honest I share the same feeling as you towards their free to air coverage. They haven’t been forthcoming of what they are going to show live. A NZ athlete was racing yesterday and they showed a small bit on Sky Open before directing you to watch the rest of the race live on their paid channels. I’m not a fan of the Crowd Goes Wild daily recaps, they’d be better suited to a late night wrap tbh. I agree, with the Eric Young comment and the need for a proper anchor. I just think Sky Open should show all the Kiwi athletes LIVE and without the awful border. Really disappointed with the coverage, I know TVNZ had it’s faults with Tokyo but they managed to have the kiwis live. Such an outside chance but I hope TVNZ gets the Brisbane games if they haven’t been snapped up already.

Wasn’t a lot of TVNZ’s delayed? I can’t recall but I seem to recall they made a commitment to show every NZ but most was delayed?

Pretty sure this is the last in Sky’s current rights deal.

The rights in NZ sound horrendous.

Doesn’t help there are only two realistic options for rights holders in NZ

The rights in NZ are Foxtels dream, exclusive rights behind a paywall, dish out free scraps if and when they feel like it

In that case the IOC really shouldn’t be dealing with pay tv in such a small market. Should go to free to air by default. They’ll kill the games.

Hi! First time writing, long time lurking.

Sharing with you how the Philippines covers Paris 2024: The broadcast is exclusive to a single company only, the Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP) Group of Companies, which have extensive interests in telecommunications, roads, electricity, and, yes, media.

According to the group, PLDT, Smart and Mediaquest (TV5, RPTV, One Sports, One Sports+ and Cignal TV, as well as Over-the-top platforms Cignal Play and Pilipinas Live) have joined forces to provide a coverage where every Filipino action will be accessed live (hoping that they won’t repeat a blunder in Tokyo where our country’s first ever Gold Medal winner, Hidilyn Diaz, was only shown live on PPV and delayed on FTA hahaha)

The group has been covering the Olympics since London 2012 and has only deployed a small team to assist Dentsu, who holds the current pan-Asian rights until this Olympics (it will switch to Infront Sports and Media from 2026-32)

For Paris, they are highlighting the 100th year of Philippine Participation in the Olympic Games, hence the Coverage Title: “Isangdaang Taong Laban para sa Bayan” (100 Year Fight for Country)

So, here’s the network bug that they are using (Under One Sports)

\

Sponsor billboard in-event

And updates from one of their “Paris Correspondents”, Carlo Pamintuan, aired on their news channel, One News (not to be mistaken with the NZ news org) (most of their correspondents are roaming across venues where Filipinos are playing)

Will be sending more in the coming days!

Been on pay since 2012. It’s not killed them yet.

Different market - not everyone has Sky in NZ but its penetration is a lot higher than Foxtel has ever been

There are compounding issues - the small market and lack of major advertisers - mean FTA can’t support the bids that Nine for example put up. Obviously the IOC could accept a smaller bid in NZ and compensate elsewhere but it’s the IOC.

Those “watermarks” seem like something WIN would do if they got very lazy with their cover ups.
