Sky NZ coverage kicks off
The commercial-free hour starts at 1.30pm US EDT, sponsored by six Team USA partners: The Coca-Cola Company, Delta, Lilly, Toyota Motor Corporation, Visa, and Xfinity. Brand logos for each sponsor will have a presence onscreen during the hour and will rotate in 10-minute increments.
It will be interesting to see if the end credits of the overseas broadcasts state that the IOC owns the copyright.
In the past NBC have said (C) International Olympic Committee.
Do they have anyone actually there?
Entertainment Tonight had a story about the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. It featured British diver Tom Daley jumping on the cardboard beds in the village which are “so-called anti-sex beds”.
Then they showed the Olympic mascot brand condoms which will be handed out to athletes and mentioned this was in response to 29% of athletes reporting that they had contracted STIs at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
lol yeah that video of Tom on all fours has been going viral on social media. Some say he did it deliberately….
Glen Larmer is there not sure what he’s calling.
No commentators (taking world feed) but several reporters on ground for flash interviews and colour.
The control centre for NBC’s coverage
Over 3,000 miles from the heart of Paris, Stamford’s NBC Sports campus serves as mission control for the next two weeks, more than doubling its on-site staff to bring the 2024 Paris Olympics to life.
“The buzz, I mean, you get to feel like you’re there,” said NBC Sports anchor Kathryn Tappen. “The footprint of the entire Olympics is originating from our hub here in Stamford, Conn.”
“They have a growing footprint of over 2,000 employees and the impact to our city has been incredible,” said Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons.
Those 2,000-plus employees represent nearly two-thirds of the entire Olympics coverage team working out of Connecticut, ranging from production crews to studio talent.
I’m guessing the BBC are also in the same complex as Nine and NBC?
Both HoyTV and TVB in Hong Kong started their build-ups at 2300 HKT. The former uses their main set (plus two smaller sofa ones), while the latter resembles more of a traditional variety show in one big studio.
HoyTV’s throws to Paris look more impressive too, with correspondents spread across the city, whereas TVB’s seem to be stuck in a hotel shower (okay, they also have live shots, but this is my first glance!).
ViuTV started theirs at 0030 - their first big event after their usual studio was no more, with the building being redeveloped. Featuring a main sofa set that sees through the ‘newsroom’ behind them, plus another newsdesk just a few steps away.
[13/8 Update] Per a NowTV football pundit on Threads, the studio was borrowed from Now Sports, transformed swiftly after The Euros, and construction is now underway to change it once more for the Premier League.
TVB switched to a different set (or brought the giant Olympic rings in) for the opening ceremony at 0050.
RTHK TV32 has a decent studio ‘specifically designed for the Olympics’. They’re also the only station that provides trilingual coverage (Putonghua in collaboration to CMG and at a standing part of the studio; also English).
The city’ 3 news Channels all chimed into the opening ceremony.
Bruce managed to get through the cracks and end up on Nine’s (or Stan’s or really Eurosport’s) Olympic coverage, through this promo video which was used as an intro to a few of the Eurosport channels (some with alternative narration, other’s without narration at all).
Love the video though.
Olympics done on the cheap, seems to be Sky’s specialty.
Sky NZ (simulcast on Sky Open/Gold channel 53) opening ceremony coverage ended at 10:28am (NZST), despite the ceremony ended itself an hour ago with commercials added.
The full ceremony itself was on Paris 2 (channel 54) without interuptions.
Yeah, and it was very disruptive with ad’s… far too many. I don’t normally watch the opener, and I probably won’t again. Hope this isn’t the standard of their coverage for us non-paying plebs, otherwise I just won’t bother.
