You might all not agree, but Ten is the lowest rating commerical station out of the big 3, something isn’t being done right.
I’m not going to say which page it is, but I own a Facebook page where I can reach 2 million views from a single post, not all the time but it happens occasionally, and it’s because I know my niche and my auidence and what makes them click.
Ten is failing to appeal to the mainstream which is what they need to do being a commercial TV station. If they don’t change something they’ll lose viewers.
There is no point in defending something that isn’t working, Ten needs to change. A lot of people in the industry will be offended and upset by what I have typed but if you don’t change with the times you will be replaced by social media. Don’t become a dinosaur and open your eyes.
I have a passion for television and don’t want it to die so i’ll write a passionate, truthful response.
They’re bleeding viewers no matter what. What’s rating right now is what’s currently in that 5-8pm timeslot (e.g. DOND Australia, The Project). To devote that time to whatever vapid social media algorithm you’re proposing to “appeal to the mainstream” would surely put the channel on its deathbed.
Not totally disagreeing with your comments about Ten, but I do think you are a little obsessed with FB view numbers. I see things on there - forced by them (that I don’t want to) that I may have viewed but that was just me scrolling past it as fast as I can while taking in absolutely nothing about the post.
You’re just being nostalgic for a time when you first watched it. Others will think the same thing for an era when they watched the show with whatever team they had then. It’s a case of you getting old and not adapting to change.
I think you’re obsessed social media. It’s not the most important measure for success. If you just based your show on social media responses then what’s it going to be like? Coverage of gruesome murders and international pop culture like Dr Who, because that’s going to get you the most clicks?
Mate. Come on. There’s no need to be that nasty. None at all. I get you really like the Project but was there any need for you to take that guy’s comments so personally? You sound very pompous there. Disagree all you like, but don’t go shouting at people. Otherwise you’re as bad as the people on Sky News whom you hate so much.
I’m advocating for change which is why I made the post. For one reason or another The Project has lots of negative sentiment in the community so a rebirth of it under a different name and a change of strategy in prime time will be beneficial for the network. Not only in the ratings but ad revenue.
Just as an aside, I really dislike this idea (and I’m not having a go at you by any means - you’re far from the only person to have said this) that people who don’t like new stuff are just stuck in the past. Is it true sometimes? Yeah, definitely. But in other cases, things were just better than they are now. And there was a lot more money in FTA back in the day. I think that’s why so many people look back fondly, because in many ways (certainly not all!) it was better.
I agree with this, yes TV was a better experience back in the 80s and 90s due to spending, resources and the fact that everybody was watching it. Doesn’t necessarily mean the content was better, just it was a bigger more shared experience.
But you neee to ground your truthful response in the world of reality.
Someone must be third. Always.
Linear tv is in a downward trend globally, growth is very hard
10’s brand perception is the #: network - that would take years and decades to shift
10 is 3rd because of 5pm-7pm, after 7.30 they are very competitive and daytime I believe they are competitive and late nights #1
Fixing 5-7pm would mean a massive ramp up and investment in news - and years of patience and big marketing spends / a very expensive proposition
10 has a budget relative to ad Revenue and parent company Paramount - they don’t have the money to invest in the above
They also need sports to move out of number 3 position - they requires billions - also they don’t have
Paramount is a troubled company (read the headlines?) their stock price is at an all time low and P+ bleeds money. Para simply does not have the capital to throw more money at 10
I will say their marketing and strategy could be a lot better. A lot. That’s not something that costs a lot of money. They just need to hire the right people and ad agencies to help define their strategy and targets. Something they are not great at
For example Chanel 5 in Uk (also paramount owned) is the #4 network there - still last - but they have a strategy appealing to middle England with lifestyle and Uk drama and it’s working - they are growing
Channel 5 are doing well, and they’re commissioning all the right shows… but some of their scheduling would make channels 7 and 9 blush. They are ruthless - if a show isn’t performing after one or two weeks, it gets dropped. If you’re lucky it might reappear in a graveyard slot at a much later date.
Back in 1979 (before I was born) there was the famous song “Video Killed the radio star”… 45 years later Australia’s highest paid / revenue generating entertainer is on radio.
It’s about the content and not the medium. The reason TV is dying is because it’s not producing and airing decent content that is resonating with viewers… and this is why viewers are moving to other platforms.
It doesn’t just have to be news, it can be content that resonates with the highest number of people in the comminity and staying politically neutral is one way of maximising viewerhip amongst many other things.
They also make absolute horseshit programming on Airfryers and shows that are nothing more than advetorials for big business like “Inside Tesco - secrets revealed”. Something a network would bury in a Saturday afternoon - if that.
Why do you think they are all busy migrating viewers from linear to paid streaming?
CBS > p+
ABC / fx > Hulu. Disney +
NBC > peacock
Nine > Stan
ITV > itvx
It’s a delicate dance to manage the decline
The ad dolars are not coming back
The networks see the future and they know it’s not pretty.
They are trying to eek every last drop out of lucrative FTA and pay tv for 5-10 more years whilst simultaneously building up the streamers and migrating viewers over
