That’s the most recent figure we have as per AFR article from last week.
I’m aware, but you said there’s money to be made in the current structure.
The figures are not entirely current, and don’t reflect the rising costs they would be facing and steep decline in ad revenue all networks have faced - no doubt 10 would feel that the most.
The same decline which has all but seen Three obliterated in NZ with smaller competition who also has foreign owners with deeper pockets than Paramount.
Exactly why Ten, Seven and others are making ongoing cuts each year. To manage the decline, which will only last so long until they no longer generate a profit.
If Ten winds up being sold for a knockdown price, a left-field possibility might be 10 winds up being an Indian or Chinese - focussed network. In this scenario, the Capital City stations will survive, along with the stations serving the larger regional cities (Newcastle, Wollongong, Gold Coast, Gippsland, Bendigo, Ballarat, etc). Those groups could certainly run things on a strict budget, and there would be some smart advertisers wanting to take advantage of targeted advertising.
And Neighbours might end up surviving, being re-focussed to the Indian market.
You only have to look at the Spanish-language networks in the US for something similar.
Colin Fassnidge is suggesting on X that Ten will announce 2 more shows have copped the axe.
A Professor has also stated today that they believe there will only be two commercial networks by the end of the decade.
Ten’s days are numbered.
Yeah, Seven’s debt issues could sink them.
10 turned a profit in 2022 and it seems that it was passed on through the revitalization of the Perth/Adelaide bulletins.
Seven has sunk massive amounts of money into AFL and are publicly listed with a shocking share price and no attached streaming service. I think Seven has a good chance of sinking just as much as 10 does unless Murdoch decides to dip his fingers into them.
Says the guy who didn’t have his tv series renewed on Seven because it didn’t deliver the sort of ratings to warrant its renewal given its high cost.
I’d say he knows jack all, certainly wouldn’t use him as a source of information. He should worry about his own network and the string of failures they’ve commissioned.
People have literally been saying that since the 1960s.
Not under current ownership limits
Maybe as multichannels that could be viable. They would still need to produce content for a main channel.
Surprised no one has posted this article

Are they? Channel 10 has been on the brink and come back at least twice. Sure, it might be sold on at some point - yet again, and probably more than once - but I can’t see it dying any time soon. I get you probably don’t like Channel 10 much, and you happen to have found a couple of tweets from people who agree with you… but none of that means very much. Look at the bigger picture.
Interesting article. But who owns News.com.au…?
If anything, I think we will see ABC and SBS merging before any of the commercial networks go under.
And how many times have they written an article about Ten in turmoil since their bid to buy it fell though?
Channel 10 needs to dump The Project and start again concentrating on good local Aussie content between 5pm and 8pm to get people watching again.
It is showbiz, concentrate on these aspects:
-
Balanced content that doesn’t alienate large portions of the population like The Project does… I’m seeing some 400:2 votes against the project in some social media posts. If they air a revamped live show they’ll be able to achieve 2million+ viewers instead 900,000 now
-
People who are “showbiz like” should be on air, Glamorous, good looking, sharp… not people like Hughesy who looks like he is on death’s door after becoming Vegan, Waleed Ali, Kate Langbroek, Michael Hing are not people Channel 9 would have on prime time slots at all. They are only on there because they are Rove McManus’s friends and in his comedy industry. It’s showbiz, get people on there that look showbizzy, don’t air people that look like they will look at home at a climate protest or in a discord server… Consider the success of Kyle and Jackie O, or the past success of Darryl Somers - they’ve managed to tap into the allure of show business and offer a glimpse into a more thrilling and glamorous world beyond everyday life… self driven and talented… find someone younger that has the looks and the talent to emulate the excitement of showbiz… maybe people that are already popular on social media… a social media focused station could be what revives ten
-
Lower the number of traditional “celebs” on air and dedicate more to platforms which are eating away at your station, i’m thinking people who cause complete traffic chaos when they organise meet and greets, someone like Anna Paul who has 649million followers on TikTok… get her to do celeb news, you could have 10 to 20x the viewership world wide alone.
-
Another self driven and popular guy is Jamie Zhu who now produces compelling mini documentaries online and is likable, much more likeable and down to earth than Waleed.
-
There are so many other likable down to earth Aussies on social media that would totally pull in hundreds of thousands of viewers compared to the current crew.
-
Look at what Channel 9 is doing… strong Aussie programming that resonates with the majority of Australian viewers, they start at 4pm with people that are typically glamourous, down to earth, arent opinionated on air and likeable by everyone. Then an Aussie gameshow at 5pm followed by local news at 6pm then a national show at 7pm… non devisive content that everyone typically likes.
Channel 10 (The Project) are too up themselves, trying to act like intellectuals, taking the moral highground and lecturing people who dont want to be lectured to which causes division and negative press, social media toxicity.
It’s not too late to change and save your station…
You want vapid social media influencers to host the show rather than qualified journalists? And you think they’re going to attract 2 million viewers every night? You’re dreaming. I couldn’t think of anything worse.
Do you genuinely believe this?
You clearly have NFI what you’re talking about in any way shape or form. Just delusional and clueless as to how the tv industry works in this country.
Your suggestions would send any network broke.
The obsession with some sort of ideological agenda is pathetic.
Why do you have to be so nasty in your response?
I do wonder though if they’re benefiting from efficiencies and savings that may not exist if they were to be sold off. By the same token they may also be carrying costs related to any support for the rest of Paramount’s Australian operations
Tell me you’ve never watched The Project…
Who left the Project maybe 10, 12 years ago?
Comedians on a comedy show? Shocking.
That’s usually a positive to me.
I’m not saying they host the show, I said they should host certain segments as special guests to get the viewers to retern back to TV and eyes back on the show.
Have a look at past people like Tim Bailey, I didn’t see him as highly talented, but the combination of Sandra Sully, Tim Baily, Vic Lurusso were a loved combo back in the day, and Ten just do not have this “click” now.
