Whilst no number of redundancies has been confirmed, Mediaweek has been told that the news division is not impacted.
I just don’t buy there is a future in ‘old media’ thinking. While I think we’ve probably over-corrected on consolidating media, I can’t see anything legacy being spun out (unless it’s to kill it off).
Ten suffer from being a (very) small cog in a very large wheelset and a reality that our FTA market struggles to support three commercial broadcasters being generally successful for any great length of time. Paramount/CBS have stuck around a lot longer than I expected, but it’s hard to see them staying the course if there are upstream changes around ownership and/or composition.
Any new owner would have to have reasonably deep pockets to either invest in content and try to reboot the network or to sustain the network as it rides out the next few years to try again as contracts for major sports and events become available.
thats a terrible idea
Cool.
Not a long and fruitful future, but without Paramount or another global player supplying content, trying to make a streamer strong enough to compete is very tough - Stan is making a great go of it, but their content partners could rug pull and leave them very bare. Which leaves the Seven strategy - go down with the ship of linear TV, and try and consolidate a much as they can with other operators, with their stake in radio and newspapers.
Ten as a side project for a streaming company isn’t working, and I can’t imagine any capital investment firms would be lining up for Ten, so I just have to think it’s the next step up for owners with other legacy media assets.
According to The Daily Telegraph’s Annette Sharp, about 20 staff (including COO Jarrod Villani) had been made redundant.
Article was very scathing of Beverley McGarvey.
Supposedly $45 million was spent on The Bachelors, Gladiators and Deal or no Deal.
It was Annette Sharp’s guess so don’t start quoting it as fact.
Their sentence literally starts with supposedly, the very definition of which means that there is doubt around the truth of that statement.
Interesting to note that the media refer to it as a ‘halt’ rather than a complete termination. Sites like Newscastudio also reported on the news and also refer to the above article but seemed to suggest that talks could resume at some stage while also noting the CNBC article didn’t state the reason(s) for this halt nor did it state who halted the talks. Also, CNBC has form when reporting on this merger previously, suggesting that WBD had ‘no real interest’ in acquiring Paramount in an article which also cited unnamed ‘sources’. I wonder if they’ll uphold the all-female presenting team when/if The Late News launches.
Not a jab, just genuinely curious.
Potentially. If they go with Perth they can use Natalie Forrest, or if they do it from Sydney they could use Ursula Hager.

I just can’t with this network anymore. Is this an early
April Fools Day prank?
Just how does she keep getting promoted??
Not really a promotion. It’s the same job with more responsibility. I’d say it’s just a result of network television shrinking and streaming growing.
WTF. Did they just pick someone at random for this job, or has she got some dirt on someone upstairs. She should be sacked and barred from 10.
