Paramount Australia & New Zealand

As the tv blackbox podcast pointed out, as long as 10 gets 200k at 6pm
And it’s rivals get 1 million, it will always be 3rd

All programming on 10 Will always be seen by less viewers as the network is just coming off a much lower base.

Less viewers at breakfast, less viewers 530-730

Less people see promos. Less people see marketing. Less people
Used to
Pointing the dial on 10.

It will always be this way

The highest numbers for 10 I’ve seen (besides sports) are usually around 500k

You are just as bad if you have a problem with TV Blackbox perhaps stop reading his site and avoiding his site, as it seems to trigger you.

Dont think so. I think they’ll sink TEN into the grouind.

:stuck_out_tongue: I was about to mention that.

He is not wrong it is fairly left-leaning, but I don’t think it has been fairly bad as the articles do claim to be. They certainly do push the left agenda. Just as Sky News is fairly right after dark . But who gives a fuck though? They play to the audience they want ? So its not big issue well at least for me.

I think SCA is trying to get out of the TV business - they would most likely want to sell their assets to 10 instead

He is right re: The Project, but it is not a new issue, it has been like this for many years probably since it started up, although Ten have always (last 10-15 years, younger skew) been just a little left in their ways. But they should tone it down, it’s why I find it difficult to watch more than 5-10 minutes at a time.

It does matter if you don’t want to alienate a significant section of the potential audience. The Project, ideally should be rating minimum 5-600k a night. They’ve had the full hour for years now so 4-500k should be achievable for the 6:30 half-hour when the Seven and Nine bulletins are talking washing powder, ALDI specials and sport.

That Daily Mail headline posted above is just ridiculous though. “The Project’s left-wing agenda is ‘pushing away everyday Aussies’” FFS. I am an “everyday Aussie”. I watch The Project most nights. I don’t consider myself left or right but somewhere in between, I have sympathies to both sides on certain issues. The show might have some left-leaning commentary but I don’t think it’s anything hardcore or extreme or anywhere near as bad as its critics make out.

And even if it is, so what? Yes, it will never rate as high as Seven or Nine but given it’s been running for 12 years I’d say that’s not a pre-requisite for longevity. It sits well with Ten’s younger focus and is very much a flagship for them. I’d dread Ten to be a clone of Seven or Nine. As it is, Ten is usually the only commercial network I watch and I am now over Ten’s supposed “Under 50” demographic.

We usually scream for a diverse media, but then complain when it is.

I don’t, not interested in smoke and mirrors. I just want proper pacy packaged news without nonsense. News is supposed to deliver news, if you want left or right, go on pay tv or run outside primetime.

The Project is not a strictly ‘news’ program. It’s a panel program so opinions are going to be prominent, which is fine as long as it’s moderated and challenged if inappropriate.

10 News First itself is pretty balanced, at least compared to Sky News After Dark or News.com.au or The Australian who shamelessly promote themselves as ‘credible news’.

True, it is a discussion program.

Literally everything is balanced compared to Sky News.

Ten News I find is fairly straight although I usually only see the half hour between 6 and 6.30. Back in the old days of the 1980s it used to be more sensationalist but these days I think Seven or Nine News would be far more of that tone while Ten is a bit muted in that respect now.

I’ve never been a regular viewer of The Project. There’s something a little too earnest and didactic about how issues are presented and discussed that puts me off it. The tone of the show should be a lot more relaxed, informal and light-hearted. I always thought if the format more closely resembled that of The Panel or early Studio 10 it would be a lot more appealing to Ten’s audience. I think people have had their fill of news if they’ve just watched 90 minutes of Ten News or switched over from one of the other commercial bulletins.

They need to get rid of the suits and sharp angles and stop preaching to the audience. Balanced discussion on news of the day and hot topics with regular guests to discuss sport, relationships, pop culture, consumer issues and the like should be featured along with interesting visiting celebrities and interview subjects. Perhaps leave the serious, hard hitting stuff to 60 Minutes or do a serious feature story on the Sunday show. Make it less newsy and add a bit of variety and entertainment to early evenings instead of regurgitating elements of the news cycle that have been repeated throughout the day.

If we go down that path it means TV Blackbox cannot ever report on channel 10 - we are a TV Blog. I really think we have said positive things about them when warranted. On the podcast this week I specifically made a point that I was wrong about Dog House Australia - it’s far exceeded what I thought it would do.

It’s easy to write off anything negative but how long do I have to wear the badge of ‘disgruntled ex-employee’? I just don’t care any more but as a TV writer I will call them and any other network to account - so take it however you want, but that’s where I’m coming from

You’re absolutely right about this being a bigger problem for the entire industry and I have spoken a lot about that – but these figures show 10 has suffered more than the others and I thought that was of value.

I firmly believe 10 is now just a place holder for ViacomCBS. It’s their in in this market, nothing more.

That’s evidenced by the weight their throwing at Paramount+. The whole network’s directive has shifted from linear to online.

Correct. A quick listen to this morning’s revenue call will confirm that ViacomCBS and 10 is nothing more than a streaming company, as correctly called by Seven’s James Warburton. CBS and 10 are now simply vessels for Paramount+.

My only question mark is over 10 Play and how it lives around Pluto, which VIAC are 100% behind. I suspect they’ll keep the 10 Play name but it could be a watch-this-space platform.

At the moment, 10play and Pluto offer completely different things. 10play is a stock standard catch-up service, whereas Pluto is a more like what 7plus is turning into with online channels themed around different content.

I can’t imagine a local launch of Pluto would in any way affect 10play, similar to 10 All Access staying separate.

Yes, I forgot that CBS has its own CBS App.

I have Pluto and it is fantastic - and it would be attractive to many viewers who want a straight forward and free TV service. It even has a ‘Paramount+’ channel that includes rolling Picks from the platform. Perhaps a ‘10’ picks channel could exist on this too, should it go local.

How so? You didn’t provide or compare any figures from the others.

And when someone else in this thread (above) actually did do the analysis we can see Home and away is down in the same period 44%, , ACA down 33% and The Project down just 30% - they’ve weathered the drops better in fact

What data did the article give to illustrate the argument 10 suffered more than the others?
