It’s World Television Day. Let’s Celebrate!

It’s World Television Day, so let’s raise a remote to the one thing that’s kept us sane in 2020!

From the brightest entertainment shows, to the breaking news events, TV has been there with us, through thick and thin.

Although how and what we watch has changed, over 82% of Australians still settle in to watch TV each week. Whether it’s a gripping drama, a hilarious comedy, or some daytime telly to get you through a “sick” day, TV is always there to entertain the nation.

And since TV plays such a big part in our lives, we thought we’d rattle off just some of our favourite TV moments from 10, MTV and Nickelodeon over the years.

  • Australian Idol. Who could forget a baby-faced Guy Sebastian and his infamous afro taking out the title in 2003?
  • MasterChef Australia . The award-winning, heart-warming, record-breaking cooking show that turned average Aussie cooks into household names.
  • The Oprah Winfrey Show. Who could forget when talk-show queen, Oprah, and a legion of her most loyal fans paid us a visit down under in 2010?
  • MTV VMAS . Where were you when Britney, Madonna and Christina kissed at the 2003 awards?
  • The Project . It’s news delivered differently, but it’s also so much more. It’s the platform that helped raise an incredible $2.5 million dollars in one hour during Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Special this year. And it’s the show that brings important, confronting, and pivotal cultural conversations to the front of our minds, just like Waleed Aly’s monologue, Isil Is Weak, which has been viewed over 30 million times.
  • 10 Sport . Who could forget the magic moments of 10’s 1998 Seoul Olympics when swim coach Laurie Lawrence went nuts over Duncan Armstrong winning gold in the 200m Freestyle? Plus, it was 10’s dynamic and game-changing family friendly coverage of the Big Bash League that changed the game forever, and don’t even get us started on the AFL Grand Final memories!
  • Neighbours . Australia’s longest running drama has gifted us countless memorable moments. Remember when viewers turned out in spades for Scott and Charlene’s big wedding in 1987? And who could forget when fan favourites David and Aaron tied the knot in 2018, making it TV’s first legal same sex wedding officiated by none other than Magda Szubanski.
  • Number 96. This classic soapie was ahead of its time and broke ALL the rules when Abigail got her kit off.
  • Offspring . Need we say more? There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Patrick died. Australia is still in mourning.
  • Heartbreak High . Life for this bunch of Hartley High School students wasn’t easy in the 90s and the show left its mark on a generation of viewers.
  • The Comedy Company . Sunday nights on 10 were a laugh a minute with Kylie Mole, Con the fruiterer, Uncle Arthur and Col’n Carpenter.
  • Rove Live . The biggest names in entertainment would always swing past for a chat, creating some seriously memorable telly!
  • Big Brother . When housemate Merlin taped up his mouth and refused to answer Gretel Killeen’s questions, it became a moment in the history of live TV.
  • Young Talent Time . Family entertainment at its best which helped launched the careers of Tina Arena, Dannii Minogue, Debra Byrne and so many others.
  • 10 News . September 11, 2001, the day the world changed. 10 Newsreader Sandra Sully’s late-night bulletin went down in Australian television history.
  • Prisoner. One of Australia’s biggest drama exports developed a cult following. Queen Bea puts that steam press to good use.
  • Good Morning Australia With Bert Newton . This show changed the genre of morning television and made it cool.
  • Blankety Blanks . This risqué game show from the 70s hosted by Graham Kennedy with regulars Ugly Dave Gray, Noelene Brown and Stuart Wagstaff was the campest show on TV.
  • It’s A Knock-Out . The crazy antics of grown men and women in ridiculous costumes trying to scale a variety of soapy obstacles.
  • The Panel . Late night talk show at its finest. Panellist Kate Langbroek caused a furore when she breast-fed live on air.
  • The Secret Of Life Of Us . Melbourne in the early noughties with a bunch of twenty-somethings living their best life.
  • Perfect Match . Love was in the air in the 80s. Long before The Bachelor , host Greg Evans was match-making couples with a little help from a robot called Dexter.
  • The Go! Show . This iconic pop music show from the 60s was a massive hit with teeny boppers and played a part in launching Olivia Newton-John’s career.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants . Arguably one of the most iconic TV characters ever created, SpongeBob is one of the most talked about, tweeted about and meme-worthy figures who has gone as far as influencing pop culture and garnering more social following than Taylor Swift. Need we say more?

So, put on your trackies, grab some popcorn, a spot on the sofa and indulge in World Television Day.

Disclaimer: We would like to apologise if we haven’t included your favourite TV moment in this list. There were just way too many to list. Happy World Television Day.

She, and any successful employee for that matter, would work with what they are given in their budgets.

It’s not like 10 aren’t spending money, just on general entertainment not news.

That can’t be good for local jobs.

You’ll still need local monitoring and playlist creation.

I think the bigger picture here is moving away from locally managed server space for programs and ads, should be interesting.

Hope the NBN is up to it… Last thing we need is buffering

Our corporate internet in the CBD is on par with anywhere else in the world. Services like 10 play will be just as good as they are now. Be interesting to see if Ten continue to use CDNs like akami for 10 play which has advantages with caches at most ISPs AWS has Cloud front which has caches in most Australian cities but not at the ISP.

ViacomCBS Appoints Raffaele Annecchino President and CEO, ViacomCBS Networks International

David Lynn to leave ViacomCBS after 24 Years

ViacomCBS, Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAC, VIACA) today announced that Raffaele Annecchino has been appointed President and CEO of ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI), effective immediately. He succeeds David Lynn, who is stepping down and will depart the company following a transition period.

In his new role, Annecchino will oversee all of ViacomCBS’s media networks and related businesses outside the U.S. As part of this, he will be responsible for a portfolio of pay-TV entertainment brands and broadcast networks across six continents – including Channel 5 in the UK, Telefe in Argentina, Network 10 in Australia and Colors in India through a joint venture with Viacom18 – and work closely with ViacomCBS’s global streaming organization to help guide the continued international rollout of Pluto TV and the launch of Paramount+ in 2021. He will report to Bob Bakish, President and CEO, ViacomCBS.

“Raffaele is an entrepreneurial, results-oriented leader with a proven ability to transform businesses and drive growth across diverse markets,” said Bakish. “In recent years, Raffaele has taken on increased responsibility, demonstrating strategic and operational expertise that extends across a wide variety of geographies and platforms. His experience in expanding ViacomCBS’s international footprint, forging key partnerships and accelerating our push into mobile and digital platforms will be critical to building on our leadership positions across Europe, Latin America and Asia and realizing our global ambitions.”

Bakish added, “I want to extend my deepest thanks to David for his many contributions over the past two decades, from integrating the international portfolios of CBS and Viacom to overseeing the launch of Viacom International Studios, including the acquisition of Ananey and repositioning the division to enable the continued expansion of our global streaming offerings. I’m grateful for his dedication and leadership and wish him the best as he starts this next chapter.”

“It’s an honor to step into this role and help continue ViacomCBS’s strong momentum around the world,” said Annecchino. “We have an exciting opportunity to broaden the company’s reach through new, innovative distribution channels and partnerships, and I look forward to working with Bob and the rest of the team to execute against our growth initiatives.”

Over the course of his 23-year tenure, Annecchino has held a number of positions across ViacomCBS Networks International, formerly Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN). Most recently, he served as President of ViacomCBS Networks Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia (EMEAA), during which time he oversaw operations across a range of markets and led and coordinated VCNI’s mobile strategy globally. Among his achievements were the launch and acquisition of free-to-air channels in the key markets of Italy, Spain and Germany, and the creation of a new business unit in September 2020 to help drive ViacomCBS’s digital businesses across the EMEAA region, including capturing opportunities across free and pay streaming, advanced advertising and ViacomCBS Digital Studios International. Annecchino also led the expansion of Pluto TV in Europe with the recent successful launch of the service in Spain and the upcoming roll out in France and Italy in 2021.

Prior to joining MTV Networks International in 1997, Annecchino held positions at Turner International, Cartoon Network and CNN. He holds a Bachelor of Economics from the European Business School, London, UK, and an Executive MBA from the Instituto de Empresa International, Madrid, Spain. He completed the CTAM U Executive Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2016 and the CTAM Europe Executive Management Program at INSEAD in 2017.

Lynn commented, “It’s been an honor and a privilege to spend the greatest part of my career at ViacomCBS. From my early days at Comedy Central and Nickelodeon to more recently managing teams across our global portfolio, I’ve benefitted from working with the most dynamic, talented team in the industry – who in this most challenging year succeeded in transforming the business for the next important phase of growth.”

As President and CEO of VCNI and, before that, VIMN, Lynn was responsible for numerous strategic growth initiatives to diversify the company’s international business, which led to a significant increase in the company’s digital advertising and subscription revenues, among other achievements. As part of this, Lynn oversaw the launch of Viacom International Studios and the international rollout of Pluto TV and Noggin. Previously, he served as President of VIMN UK, Northern and Eastern Europe, where he oversaw Viacom’s global distribution strategy and led the acquisition of Channel 5 Broadcasting and its integration into Viacom. Before that, he was SVP, Managing Director, for Nickelodeon UK, where he strengthened its position in one of the UK’s most competitive viewing demographics, launching Nick Jr. and kick-starting its digital strategy.

Network 10’s chief operating officer Annabelle Herd was today appointed the new CEO of Australian Recording Industry Association. Herd had worked at 10 for 16 years.

ViacomCBS has made a massive effort, and Ten has followed, to improve their corporate social responsibility regarding indigenous minorities. The broadcast of the Sunrise Ceremony being the most recent. They have made massive moves, some would say too much in such a short period of time, to shift away from CBS, but any thought that ViacomCBS has not made any effort or does not care is clearly incorrect.

Some need to be reminded CBS was a very big business, let alone ViacomCBS.

Was reading that article earlier. Both have been suspendef while the allegations are investigated.

CBS is in deep trouble here. Lookibg at the Les Monves contraversy youd think the company and parent company would further enhance training on behavioural management.

One more reason to boycott CBS for me (as I am subscrivet of youtube tv and cbs all access)

Disgusting and tells u a lot of the bullying and racisim culture in this organization.

ViacomCBS ANZ COO Jarrod Villani told the AFR it would take up to two years for the “enormous efficiencies” of the merger of Viacom and CBS to flow through to 10 here.

Great work by the CBS team on their Superbowl coverage… strange to see its on 7 here rather than 10 due to pre-existing rights deals.
