I meant the speaker.

why?

Because he went against the President. It was a joke but it doesn’t matter now…

Long-running Hong Kong political satire series Headliner, which is produced by public broadcaster RTHK, could be facing the axe after 31 years, after the Communication Authority yesterday upheld complaints against the program for denigrating and insulting local police.

Using the same analogy, it will be like Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell or The Weekly with Charlie Pickering being forced to stop production because they lampoon the current Federal Government.

But hang on, won’t that trigger anti-competitive provisions? Cascading divestment to follow?

They’re more worried about the telco side. Rogers owns the CityTV and Omni systems, plus Sportsnet, a shitload of radio stations and a stake in MLSE (who owns the Raptors, Maple Leafs and Blue Jays), under Rogers Sports and Media.

Shaw did own Global TV, but that was “sold off” to Corus Entertainment, which the Shaw family also owns. The merged entity would only own the Rogers Sports and Media arm, if they haven’t being told to split off. The Shaws also are looking at selling off their stake in Corus, and would hold a stake in the combined company.

However, if the Shaws still have control of Corus at the time of the merger, which I am not sure if they do, the CRTC regards Shaw and Corus to still be one company (Shaw Media being sold to Corus was considered a corporate reorganisation), and so divestments would still have to happen.

That said, they could be told to divest parts of their cable and wireless telco arms to allow for competition, and maybe not the media arm if indeed the Shaws can prove they do not have control of Corus.

Does that make sense to anyone?
