Optus Sport

Isn’t that a video game?

It doea appear to be a screenshot of the upcoming EAFC 24 (formerly FIFA). EA Sports have had the official license for the Premier League for some time now, with more recent iterations including the official graphics. I’m still a little wary given we only have this screenshot and nothing from anything related to media, but it would not be surprising if they update the graphics given the current set have been in use for quite a while now.

The EPL did launch a new look after the previous season ended so I’d say the graphics have likely changed.

The platform doesn’t need to give competitors an insight into how much revenue it might be generating. Dickens explained: “It’s commercially sensitive information, particularly when there’s a new set of rights in the market for the future. Netflix can’t tell you how many people watch Stranger Things. Disney don’t tell you how many people watch The Mandalorian.

Not sure they’re directly comparable - but Optus, you do you

  • Optus Sport continues its long-standing support of women’s football with coverage of every round of the Barclays Women’s Super League.

After capturing the nation’s hearts and imagination during the recent Women’s World Cup, which saw strong viewing records and unprecedented interest in the women’s game, several Matildas squad members return to action this weekend for their respective teams in the Barclays Women’s Super League, which kicks off on 1 October – with every round live only on Optus Sport.

Aston Villa are taking on Manchester United in the first game of the new WSL season: Kick-off is 10:30pm Sunday AEDT (Australian Eastern Daylight Time).

Currently there are 10 members of the Matildas World Cup squad playing in the Barclays Women’s Super League:

  • Sam Kerr for Chelsea FC
  • Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross for Arsenal FC
  • Teagan Micah for Liverpool FC
  • Mackenzie Arnold for West Ham United
  • Courtney Nevin for Leicester City
  • Clare Wheeler for Everton FC
  • Alanna Kennedy and Mary Fowler for Manchester City

All eyes will be on superstar Sam Kerr and her Chelsea team kicking off their title defence at home to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who Chelsea defeated home and away last season on their way to securing the title, pipping Manchester United by just two points.

As well as live coverage of every round in the Barclays Women’s Super League, Optus Sport customers can enjoy Mini Matches, previews, news stories, and dedicated new highlights show, Women’s Football Wrap, which will provide viewers with a weekly wrap-up that recaps the best of the action, reaction and results in women’s football.

Howard Rees, Head of Optus Sport, said, “Optus Sport is very proud of its long-standing support of women’s football and the record-breaking engagement we experienced during the recent Women’s World Cup cemented the Matildas’ status as box office superstar viewing.

“Now with many Matildas returning to domestic action in England, we’re expecting interest in women’s football to continue to rise throughout the Barclays Women’s Super League season with what promises to be the best season yet.”

Step Catley, Arsenal FC player and Optus ambassador, said, “Watching the nation get behind the Matildas during our run in the Women’s World Cup was incredible.

“When I was young, none of it was possible and now we’re seeing this generation of young girls and boys cheer on the team and that’s been so inspiring.

“Now fans across the country can get behind many of the superstars that lit up the Women’s World Cup in the new season of the Women’s Super League with every round live on Optus Sport.”

$21.99 just for NBA seems a bit steep? Or do you get the Optus Sport with it as well?

Standard price that the NBA itself charges. I swear it used to be a lot more than that at some point.

The US streaming packages aren’t cheap, NFL Game Pass (which is through DAZN now, although that is separate to the mainline DAZN subscription Optus is offering) is AU$280/year and baseball’s one is about $200 or so. They do reduce the price as the season goes on.

Only really the NFL one sticks out as an OMG-price due to only one game per team a week, but they can afford to do that. With an 82-game NBA and 162-game MLB season multiplied by ~30 teams, there are a LOT of games that you get each month, far too much to watch in more than condensed form.

Mainline DAZN makes kinda sense as an option for Optus to offer through SubHub - although DAZN built their local package on fight sports, they have also picked up a number of women’s soccer rights recently.

Wow yes, Kayo is a bargain compared to all of those when you consider the number of different sports they have.

Access to sport tv services in the US isn’t cheap

You do get access to every game through the likes of NBA League Pass or MLB.tv plus additional content the leagues produce. Kayo gives you way more variety though but you are also tied to whatever FOXTEL has the rights to so with the NBA for instance your only getting the games that are broadcast on TNT and ESPN in the US.

This has been reported in a few different places, while it appears Optus Sport Satellite for residential is definintely closing down later in the month, I’ve heard mixed reports on commercial distribution for pubs and clubs.

With beIN leaving Foxtel mid last year this only leaves the Fox Sports suite of channels, ESPN and Sky Racing/Racing.com that are distributed via satellite.

In my view Optus Sport Satellite was doomed from the get-go in that it required a dedicated box (separate from the VAST box), and wasn’t made available via Foxtel as an independent subscription and separate bill (similar to how Setanta worked when it started). If it was something that you could add on to VAST I think uptake would have been better.

Won’t that mean Optus Sport will be seen in less places, especially in regional areas?

Not sure - frankly I’ve not come across many venues that have had it on in the first place

Optus Sport is still good for Premier League Soccer but not sure how else it’s still viable , but what does this mean for regional ?
