One News

On TV, I don’t think anyone expects TV3 to cover breaking news anymore, in much the same way no one expected Prime/SkyOpen to do the same back in the “olden days.”

I don’t think anyone expects TV3 to cover news anymore, full-stop! Wonder how many people - at least your casual TV watchers - know that there is still news on 3?

Former TVNZ Breakfast host Kamahl Santamaria has released a series of internal staff emails and messages that he says highlight the level of animosity towards him at the state broadcaster during his short tenure.

Santamaria has won the right to have his legal dispute with TVNZ fully moved from the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) to the Employment Court to achieve a faster resolution.

He has said he has been unfairly “cancelled” and “became and remains unemployable” because of the fallout from his departure from TVNZ in 2022.

Santamaria has received almost 3000 internal and individual TVNZ files, including emails and messaging app messages, as part of a Privacy Act request … he provided several examples:

“There were comments about my race: ‘Man, so many stories about the iniana Kamahl eh lol’ [Iniana is the Māori word for Indian].
“Questions over the race that I wasn’t: ‘Where was the consultation … about how we can align this appointment with the Rautaki Māori [strategy] and see if there was a super-Māori out there who we could have recruited?’
“Criticisms of my on-air skills (none of which were actually raised with me): ‘It had Kamahl’s dull fingerprints all over it … it was such s*** telly’ [and] ‘Omg Kamahl sounds very camp’.
“Continuing comments after my departure: ‘If I ever see Kamahl Santamaria in the street I will (insert empty threat here)’.”

Santamaria said he accepted that people would gossip and have their opinions.

“That happens in any workplace, whether we acknowledge it or not. But this was specific stuff, and it was widespread.

“As far as I knew, I was being welcomed into TVNZ… but all those warm welcomes given to my face and online by new colleagues belied what was actually happening behind the scenes.”

I think that’s an automatic feature that flashes breaking headlines on the Freeview feed whenever the RNZ website sends out a breaking news push notification. So no actual TV producing involved.

I’m not surprised at this point that neither TVNZ nor Three managed a Breaking special or anything like it. I presume the people who would’ve done those were the 1News Tonight or Newshub Late producers. Obviously those two programmes no longer exist.

Speaks poorly to both though since this is easily the most preparable breaking story. Presumably both of them have OBIT packages prepared. Can’t imagine it’s that much harder to do up the rest so it’s all ready to go with minimal staffing requirements at night.

Does 1 News even broadcast in HD?

Always wondered this but just watching Al Jazeera on Freeview streaming app on my tv and the picture quality of everything is 1000000 times better than TVNZ puts out.

Al Jaz looks awful on the Freeview streaming app on my TV and TVNZ looks pretty good.

Pretty sure 1News broadcasts in HD?

Think they went HD when they moved to the current set in 2018? Might have even been a bit before that.

Around then. They’ve been HD for many years.

Not an issue but I thought the news was allowed to keep swear words uncensored?

It’s a grey area - they could if they could justify it as newsworthy but also, is it something kids need to see or hear? 6pm different time slot to late news too (RIP)

And each network has their own internal rules as to what is justified.

Been watching 1 news a bit more lately and jebus their graphics are so bland and messy. They need a full refresh like 2015.

And I wish they’d refer to Dan Corbett as a meteorologist, not weather man or weather presenter.

Edit:
Does Aziz not have a base in Australia he can work from? I notice most of his reports are piece to cameras. Or is this just his preference?

Not a regular viewer, but the odd bit’s I’ve seen, I think the bulletin is tired, the on-air talent show little chemistry together, and the graphics are shithouse. It’s frumpy as, bro.

They don’t have to try and innovate the linear product anymore since they’ve really got no major competition. Obviously ThreeNews is still going but it’s not a big as Newshub’s operation was.

At least ThreeNews are varying their presentation of the 6pm bulletin.

How do the ratings compare between both bulletins nowadays?
