One News NZ (2016-Feb 2025)

What ‘Tonight’ branded as ‘Late Edition’ then?

Yep - TVNZ for a time went in and out of utilising Tonight as the late news brand. Was definitely Tonight in the mid-90s (back when it was at 9:40pm) then it switched to Late Edition around 2000 (presumably when One Network News was rebranded as One News), then they tried a late night interview show in 2003 called The Last Word with Pam Corkery, including a news update. In 2004, Eric Young and Kate Hawkesby co-hosted a late bulletin which was called Tonight (including the sign off “That was today, this was Tonight”) and since then (barring any memory lapses on my part it’s been called Tonight).

It sounds better in theory than it actually was. They never quite got the format right for it from memory.

Had a bit of trouble getting this angle working today, appears TVNZ had issues switching after Te Karere to the News Special.

From the TVNZ website.

A Current Affair branding - using the flat logo of the Channel Nine version.

I see Susie has updated her Twitter profile that she is also Producer of 20/20.

Hope TVNZ have something decent lined up for her eventually…

Why can’t tvnz just use their brand font and make a ACA logo themselves… that Aussie one is horrible as is it’s format and any story on it.

it probably comes with the format, which presumably TVNZ have purchased for some unknown reason.

I was under the impression that both TVNZ and Nine have (or at least used to have) some form of content sharing agreement for news & current affairs, although who knows if A Current Affair would come under that deal.

They do…

The programmer from TVNZ2, Edward Kindred, is from Australia. He’s worked at Nine before - I assume that’s why we’re seeing this format pop up.

Don’t give it long till it’s axed. Hearing whispers other news is planned for 2.
