1NEWS needs to revamp the entire Newshour with single anchor format, weather still too long, no business section, a complete change is needed to keep the viewership!
Sorry but this is nonsense.
1News is rating higher than it has in years.
Business sections are a turn off to most people and no one runs through the numbers anymore because 1) Most people just don’t care, 2) Those that do are usually well across them/have better ways to access them and don’t need a wrap.
Weather is one of the most popular segments in the bulletin. That’s why until a couple of years back they had a tease at the front of the bulletin.
Business sections were certainly a moment in time weren’t they. I remember when 3News used to have live crosses nightly crosses to ASB. Surely it only served a minority of the audience at best and as you mentioned @OnAir anyone in the know would be well served across the day from other sources.
I am surprised 1News have actually scaled back their weather in recent years across the bulletin.
Probably because ASB Securities paid $$$ for it. Same reason why UDC or FMG or whatever pay for the pointless Farming Forcast during Country Calendar.
yep and for a time both networks had the (sponsored) morning business shows, but as that audience has become more agile online it became less necessary.
Yep. Good old integrated content.
Lol the weather isn’t long at all. Imo it quickly runs through all the required bits a lot quicker than in the past.
And she’s back! Wendy Petrie is hosting 1News Tonight!
That’s right, I forgot all about those ASB business updates at 6.30pm on 3News way back in 2005 when it started, can’t remember when they stopped. Michael Wilson used to present a business update for the old 3News at 12 and there was a market report from Craigs investment for One News at 4.30. Business news has really scaled back since then.
To put this into perspective (from my own point of view), a regular ‘news hour’ from 6-7pm with a single anchor format is usually divided into five segments with four commercial breaks in between (i.e. approx 2 minutes each):
Segment 1: Major national news stories
Commercial break 1
Segment 2: International news stories
Commercial break 2
Segment 3: Sports news (with a separate anchor)
Commercial break 3
Segment 4: Headlines, followed by business news (with a separate anchor)
Commercial break 4
Segment 5: Weather (with a separate presenter), followed by closing headlines
A radical approach would be to completely streamline the “newshour”.
I think we now live in a world where an hour of nightly news is probably too much, considering how much we are now all consuming news digitally.
We all know this, and with that being said, one of the networks should make the change to a 30min news bulletin. The stories would then be tighter and the scripts sharper. You could have more live crosses or reporters in studio to concisely tell their stories. I think this would make the bulletin more dynamic and would flow well into the 6:30-7p product of a longer form current affairs programme that would be an analysis and opinion show.
I think the traditional newshour is seeing its demise and if one of the networks makes the radical move to cut it to a half hour news show, the other one will follow. Who is game enough to do it first?
Found a few links for anyone who is interested the last time TVNZ used the “Your Vote” branding back in 2002:
First one is an analysis show on the old late news show One News Late Edition:
Second one is a Holmes leaders debate live from the election centre at the former Avalon site:
Does anyone having any clips of Election night 2002, the TVNZ set looked very grand coming live from the old Avalon studios.
Just extending on this, does anyone have any clips of any election coverage from ~96 to ~11.
One News & 3 News broadcasts from 2014 and 2017 are available on YouTube. Unfortunately my efforts to find others have gone amiss.
On a different note, NZ OnScreen is a great resource.
There are videos of TVNZ’s election night 2005 on YouTube but like you I haven’t found any others or ones with a full election night broadcast from the other election years.
That’s right. Orange background from memory?
Yes it was very orange and very big, if I remember correctly the couch was orange and I’m sure it was Mike Hosking hosting with a smart looking podium. Used alot of the space that Avalon could provide and felt very grand compared to TV3’s offering.
I have a feeling Hosking and Holmes shared duties maybe? Can’t quite recall.
You could be right, Paul was probably on one side of the set and Mike on the other as the results were coming in. Hopefully someone out there has some clips.
Crazy how it goes from modern (IMO for the. Time) intro graphics to a set they found in 1992
Word out, 1News will have graphics refresh in January 2021, with theme revamped as well, only heard not confirmed. Current settings are several years old.
In those days, Wellington’s Avalon Studios used to be the home of TVNZ’s election night coverage - except 1996, 1999 and 2005 (from that year onwards), where it was produced live to air at TVNZ’s Auckland studios.
