Olympics Coverage - History

Staging of the event is what I was talking about, not tv coverage. I support the idea of Qld having the Olympics because I’d like to attend the event, not because of the tv coverage that will result. By then, who knows how we’ll be watching coverage anyway.

I’d expect 7flix to be used quite a bit, especially now it’s an established channel with massive 4% shares occurring from time to time.

However not a ‘full time’ Olympics channel, only when needed in absolute (like horse racing or other sports when 7, 7Two and 7mate are all filled and can’t be altered including AFL commitments).

We saw this even during Gold Coast 2018.

NB/ 7food will be Seven’s only non-Olympics content channel I’d say. 7flix for the most part I’m sure will too (movies and general entertainment shows like with Rio 2016).

More likely that they will just charge to sign up for an app with multiple HD streams.

News Corp and Seven News are among media outlets supporting South East Queensland’s bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games.

nope. don’t want it. I was working in melbourne in 2006 and i spent some time down the coast when they had the games.

it’s a mess when the games are on. road closures, restricted lanes, police escorts. trying to get to work was a pain in the arse. at one point i had to go almost 5 km out of my way thanks to rod closures.

The Sydney 2000 Olympics were fantastic. The public transport worked perfectly. There were road closures and dedicated Olympic lanes but as most people were using public transport it wasn’t a problem. I parked near a train station and caught the trains. Whether current governments could make it all work, I don’t know.

To be honest I’m not really keen on the idea of a South East Queensland Olympics for the fear that someone like Peter Beattie (I could seriously imagine him getting some Queensland rugby league player to light the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony ) would not quite pull it off, similar to what happened with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games!

Of course Seven News (and the Seven Network as a whole) would support a South East Queensland Olympics bid, because as the official news service of “Australia’s Olympics Network” it’s an event they’d really want the broadcasting rights for!

While I don’t disagree, surely major factors behind the success of Sydney 2000 were things like the Spring NSW School Holidays were organised around the Olympics (so naturally, less people on the roads compared to during a school term) + the major advertising campaign which encouraged the use of public transport and people to take time off work during the games?

Weren’t there problems with Sydney’s public transport (something to do with the buses, I think) in the days leading up to the 2000 Olympics?

I personally doubt that Berejiklian & Constance would be able to handle something like the Olympics or even the Commonwealth Games if it was held in Sydney these days.

There will be no Olympics streaming app for next year’s games, Seven’s Kurt Burnette has told The Australian. There will be 25 streams on 7Plus, with 8 more streams available if you sign in.

they did the same for the gold coast comm games

they even ran an advertisng campagin to get people off the roads - the shooting venue even had no drive up access unless you were accredited or had a disabled pass, and in the case of a disabled pass it was pick up / drop off only - no parking whatsoever.

from what i remember they brought in bus drivers from all the over the shop but did not train them on sydney’s roads so they got lost - i recall one team almost missing there event due to this

Good decision - the IOC designed app/service they used in 2016 wasn’t great whereas the apps/service they used for both the Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Games last year were not only better but much more reliable

any idea if foxtel will carry addional olympics channels on a PPV basis? i’d guess not given they didn’t last time but i’d gladly pay

With Seven having 32 additional channels that probably covers or almost covers all simultaneous events?

it’s more about ease of use for my wife to be honest

Last time Seven did with the Rio 2016 Olympics, people have to pay Premium to watch the Games on streaming. For the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, I think that people need to pay to watch it on premium.

I hope the (free) streaming is HD this time around.

North Melbourne vs GWS comes to mind. Either that or done some deal with FOX so that they can get another game or two that Fox normally produces.
