…and Sydney news reporter for maybe two or three years up until late last year. Also occasionally presented news updates and filled in on Sydney weather or national bulletins maybe a few times.
I’m guessing that you’re not a regular viewer of Seven News (although knowing how Seven’s Sydney news service has been like in recent years, I can’t blame you) to not know her cmo!
Google tells me that Amanda Abate is from Seven News in Brisbane. I’d never heard of her either but I don’t really have a problem with new or different faces being given a go (although I would perhaps join the pro-diversity brigade and hope for some diverse talent to be employed… but then this is Channel 7?).
During Seven’s coverage of the Sydney 2000 Olympics I think it was the first time I saw or heard of Kylie Gillies, who presented updates similar to what Abate is doing now.
Even when Network 10 had Olympics coverage in the 1980s they would use presenters not heard of nationally. Rob Readings, who was a reporter for TV0 in Brisbane, was a co-host of the network’s prime-time Olympics coverage. Yet nobody outside of Brisbane would have known who he was. I guess it’s the nature of these large scale events that they may call in some lesser-known or local talents to fill up roles.
I’m pretty sure Kylie presented Olympic updates in Atlanta. Would break up the monotony of Garry wilkinsons cringeworthy hosting. He was woeful back in the day and was quite universally panned by others in the media.
I know it sounds like I hate watch the olymoics. But I really do love the event but the coverage never ever meets my expectations. I have over 15 tapes of the Sydney 2000 coverage so I really am a fan.
I just feel seven can do a better job with their personnel and sets etc.
I think so. The TV where I’m at at the moment isn’t the greatest, but it does looks a lot sharper than the SD channels. Not as good as 9HD or WINHD though (but that’s normal for an MPEG2 HD channel).
She could have but I only recalled seeing her first in 2000. I probably didn’t watch the coverage much from Atlanta but for Sydney we had a TV at work tuned to Seven all day. But if she was there in 1996 in Atlanta then again as per my point, Seven had picked a fairly untried or lesser known face to do those updates.
I’d say it’s highly likely that 7 are still providing a proper HD feed of 7mate to SCA.
They themselves are still broadcasting 7mate in HD in QLD, so they’re probably providing that same network feed used for QLD to SCA.
It’s an Olympic effort to bring the games to life. Fairfax sports journo Sam Lane takes you behind the scenes at Seven Network as they prepare to broadcast the biggest sporting event on earth.
You’re talking about Jason Richardson who mostly hosts Victorian race meets on Racing.com but he’s also involved with Seven’s horse racing coverage as well.
Like with the Australian Open supplementary coverage, 7Two & 7mate’s coverage isn’t presented from a studio. There’s simply a presenter doing voice overs to go to & promote events
We’re going to get long blocks of the same sport if they have prelims/qualifying heats. For example, the swimming heats overnight will probably be shown in full due to Australia’s medal chances
7mate and 7TWO on Prime are displaying the “LIVE AND FREE” watermark with the Red “7” logo - ie. no mention of HD on 7mate like on 7QLD, nor any mention of the multichannel that it is screening on like on the O&O stations.
Saul Shtein (network head of sport) is in Rio at their Olympics “co-ordination centre”, overseeing the 100+ team (incl commentators & journalists) putting together & feeding all the output to Melbourne (accessing 101 seperate vision feeds & feeding them to 20 seperate satellite feeds).
Then there’s 300 staff in Eveleigh, Sydney (“Rio Central”) putting the on-air production together. That’s also where the executive producer, producers & directors of the coverage are in a control room.
With around 50 staff in Melbourne “transmission centre” (24/7), controlling the broadcast/feeds/switching/commercials in and out across Australia.
He said “this is the biggest ever telecast we’re putting together”.

Is thare a particular reason why in regional QLD, Ch 7’s sport watermark have the HD as part of “Live & Free” (old style).
Totally agree on Hamish. It’s what I’ve always thought about Mel too. She is so horribly clunky and jarring in her presentation.
Is she actually at these Games? I don’t think I saw her name on the list someone posted here earlier. Disappointing if so.
What is diverse talent? You’ve just referenced all the NEW faces Seven has on their coverage…do you mean diverse talent in terms of more senior commentators like Sandy Roberts and Dennis Cometti?
Because surely a sweep of the old timers, with more new faces, means Seven is providing a diverse range of commentators?
Or do you mean diverse ethnic backgrounds, rather than diverse talent, in which case CHETKOVICH and COMETTI have already filled those positions?
Or do you not know what you mean, are just posting some rubbish dopey cliche, and having a cheap shot at Seven?
