Excellent that seven have used their three main channels for this. It’s a pretty big step forward for Olympic broadcasting here on FTA TV for a single network providing a solid choice for people. Will be interesting to see the effect of it on ratings - will it draw more people in or just disperse the same number of people across three channels (and then desktop/all streams as well). Will be interesting.

Leigh Diffey commentating rowing for NBC. Hearing his voice makes me misty eyed about the good old days of Ten’s Sports Tonight.

Someone here mentioned seeing a “couch” next to the “Rio Centro” set…

Well looks like that was the “Buzz” studio

Welcome Mel McLaughlin

NB/
Love the on-air LIVE interaction in the studio, with Hamish, Amanda & Mel…

Mel also has a live-cross on the giant screen behind, to Cycling commenator Phil Ligget on site.

Mark Readings hosting 7mate’s coverage with Bill McDonald calling table tennis. Bill is in Rio reporting on the Olympics for Seven News Brisbane so he must be doing some extra work.

Does it actually work? Did you have to activate the sim at all in a phone?

You would have to. You need to activate the Seven Olympics app over the Telstra 3G/4G connection.

The coverage on 7mate in Tas looks like proper HD, Southern Cross must still be getting a HD feed of that channel.
Is this what is happening in Prime7 areas as well?

Are any other FTA broadcasters around the world dedicating 3 channels to the Olympics? Even the BBC are only providing coverage on 2 FTA channels (BBC1 and BBC4)

Agree to disagree. All I was just stating is the bleeding obvious. But what would he do on Seven? Besides Australian Open, Sunrise and fill in on the news.

I’ve deleted and downloaded the app 3 times now. Still no sound. One reviewer says they had the same issue. Worked fine before today on the test transmission.
So an app that looks great but is useless without sound.

Next I was getting “invalid post code to reproduce channel” for the free channels! Grrr
This just goes from error to error… Now I can open the free ones and it now says it can’t validate premium!!!

BBC must be relying on live streaming for most of live action.
In Hong Kong, TVB is the FTA broadcaster and is also broadcasting on three channels: Jade (Cantonese main channel), Pearl (English channel) and J5 (Cantonese digital channel). All three channels are in HD.
This is the first time the Olympics are solely on TVB in HK. In the past TVB shared coverage with rival network ATV (they even took turns in three hour blocks to show London 2012 each day as Wharf Cable secured the pay TV rights) until ATV ceased transmission on April 2 this year.

So where would mark readings be hosting the 7 mate coverage rio or Sydney

All hosts are in Sydney apparently.

Who the fuck is Amanda abate… Never heard of her or seen her before. Where have seven dragged these unknowns from? They use to have the most prominent callers and hosts in the business. These days all these obscure people with no national identities.

God, I can remember when Dennis would call the swimming, Peter Landy would call the rowing, sandy and Liz chetovich on the gymnastics, David Christiansen would call the hockey. That’s all I can think of from memory. But must say they had better people in 1992, 1996 and 2000.

David Christenson will be calling the hockey

A quick look at the official broadcaster site - I saw about 15 European countries listed with 3 FTA channels or more.

Eg FRANCE 2, 3, 4, Ô; ERT - 1, 2, 3
