Olympics Coverage - History

At least it’ll be in HD

So I take it, Hamish McLachlan will be in the main studio in Rio (he flew out of Melbourne today)?

Mel McLaughlin, Kylie Gillies, Jim Wilson & Todd Woodbridge will be in a studio in Sydney?

NB/
Didn’t Matt White host from Sydney in Beijing 2008? I remember he kept throwing to Sandy Roberts & Bruce McAvaney (who were definitely in China)

Matt White was in Beijing hosting from the IBC back in 2008

It seems pretty much all the presenters will be hosting from what they’re calling Rio Central (aka, a studio in Sydney). Based on the preview clip shown on ‘Road to Rio’ yesterday (which I linked to), it’s the same studio currently being featured in the promos for the coverage.

Also, Seven’s Olympics website and apps (at least on iOS) have been launched.

God the website is terrible, everything is so big and clunky.

Also can’t watch the unannounced combined Canoe Slalom Boxing (clicking on it directs to a blank page). :stuck_out_tongue:

I had the same thoughts about the website and app after playing around with it for bit. It’s not well-designed but the most important test is when events start streaming - if it streams well then the website does it’s job.

Anything with a padlock (including streaming weird combined sports) requires a premium subscription. Don’t worry, you’re only missing out on watching a IBC test card! :stuck_out_tongue:

And what a test card it is! :stuck_out_tongue:

EDIT: If anyone wants to watch the link is https://ep01-03sevgen-rio-obsovp-tv.akamaized.net/ovp.v21.b/riohd:v22@20160730/chunklist_b2628000_ps20160730174502_DVR.m3u8
Not the live stream but the “DVR” of it (6+ hours of the test pattern).

EDIT 2: The now live Athletics “Test Nacho”:

So if they have rented space in Rio and are sending Hamish over then why not have the other hosts in Rio as well?

If the Olympics coverage on 7mate Wollongong is in HD instead of upscaled SD, then those residences in Sydney and Wollongong who can get both 7 and Prime7 will be able to watch both the main channel and 7mate coverage in HD. The same will apply for the Central Coast, Gold Coast etc. In north west Sydney I get perfect reception of all the Wollongong channels.

Seven launches “Olympics on 7” app

Seven today launched the digital cornerstone of its plans to make the Rio Olympic Games available to all Australians across broadcast television and connected devices: the “Olympics on 7” app.

Seven will deploy its Olympic Games content and coverage across an array of platforms – each leveraging, complementing and extending the network’s broadcast television coverage. Seven’s free-to-air television coverage of the Games represents the single largest technical and logistical undertaking by an Australian television network and, building on this, Seven is delivering a suite of digital products (including a premium upgrade option), to ensure Australians can have the Olympic Games to hand at all times. It will be the unmissable Olympic Games for all Australians.

Seven’s free streaming products will offer all three television broadcast channels, plus extra selected content, to people living in Australia – all available through the “Olympics on 7” app (Android and iOS) and online at www.seven.com.au/Olympics. *

The free product will include a live simulcast of Channel 7, 7TWO and 7mate, as well as selected curated bonus live sports event content from the Olympic Broadcast Service (OBS) channels not already featured on Seven. VOD highlights, medal tallies, alerts and photo galleries will also be available. The live and free simulcast of Seven’s channels can also be accessed via PLUS7 (on Telstra TV, Apple TV (4th gen), mobile and web), and existing Seven products 7tennis and 7live.com.au.*

The free content available through the “Olympics on 7” app and seven.com.au/Olympics website will include:*

  • Up to 900 hours of Seven’s Olympic Games broadcast, live simulcast from 7, 7TWO and 7mate
  • 300 hours of additional live bonus sports events streams - not on broadcast television
  • Hundreds of hours of video highlights
  • Medal tallies, photos and athlete profiles

A premium option for $19.95* upgrades the “Olympics on 7” app and website to include:

  • Up to 36 channels with over 3,000 total hours of HD coverage
  • Catch up and replay on demand – over 3,000 hours of catch up in HD
  • 24/7 Olympic News Channel
Premium Access to “Olympics on 7” can be purchased at seven.com.au/Olympics/premium/

Looks like Hamish is actually in Sydney though?

You have me confused - my comment was based on your saying that Hamish would be in Rio and now you are saying he will be in Sydney???

A good interview from last weekend’s paper.

Seven teams up with Google for enhanced Olympic Games search experience

The Seven Network announce they have teamed up with Google to showcase Seven’s video content as part of a unique search experience during the Olympic Games, enabling sports fans to keep up to date on the latest feats from Rio from your screen, at any time.

This new search experience will help ensure that Seven’s video content is unmissable throughout the Olympics Games. Australians searching for the Olympics will now discover event schedules, medal counts, athlete information and Seven’s video highlights in Google Search. The enhanced search experience will also link to seven.com.au/Olympics and feature ‘The Olympics on 7’ app for smartphones and tablets. Aussies will also be able to see TV schedules for individual events in local time so they can tune into Seven’s TV broadcast from Rio at just the right moment.

In addition, Seven has created a ‘7Olympics’ YouTube Channel for Australian audiences, where daily highlights, reviews, and commentaries can be found and enjoyed again and again. The ‘7Olympics’ YouTube channel will be updated frequently during the Games.

No, sorry.

That was an assumption.

But after seeing a sneak peak video over the weekend, he’s in the Eveleigh, Sydney studios.

Would Hamish be able to call the Power-Swans AFL game on Saturday at the SCG, then go to Eveleigh, Sydney studios afterwards? or is that impossible?

not impossible given that Everleigh and the SCG are reasonably close, but they’d probably want him to be absorbing Olympic action during the day instead to enhance his presentation of the Olympics.
