Olympic Games (general thread)

They do have access to the village facilities though just not accomodation.

World Aquatics posted a statement on social media this afternoon, Australian time.

Spain beat Italy 11-9.

The quarter-final between Italy and Hungary saw an Italian player ejected in the second quarter for a violent action.

I note NZ having a particularly good games after their performance at Tokyo 2020 (2021). Good on them punching well above their weight yet again.

Shame their telecasters don’t put much of an effort into the broadcast.

It beats being no 80 on the table that’s for sure.

I really feel for Rachael Gunn :frowning: But man were the memes today hilarious!

In some way I feel she was taking the piss as well. She has a PHD in breaking as part of some study into the social impact so perhaps she used her routine to write some sort of paper on the reaction. :joy::joy:

What I found confusing is that somehow she qualified for the Olympics? Or was it a free for all event?

I don’t recall exactly how she did. She was on the project talking about it but I was only half listening to her. I would guess there was some sort of qualification tournament for it all. As others have said here, breaking included in the games is all just very bizarre.

A total of 32 quota places (sixteen each for B-Girls and B-Boys) are available for eligible dancers to compete for the inaugural medals in breaking. NOCs can enter a maximum of four breakers (two per gender) across two medal events.[5][7]

Over eighty percent of the total quota is attributed to a large number of breakers through a tripartite qualification route. First, the 2023 WDSF World Championships, scheduled for 23 to 24 September in Leuven, Belgium, will award the B-Boy and B-Girl champion with a direct quota place for Paris 2024. Second, a quintet of spots will be assigned to the highest-ranked eligible breakers (one B-Boy and one B-Girl) competing in each of the designated continental meets (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania), respecting the two-member NOC limit. The remaining breakers will provide the final opportunity to book their slots for Paris 2024 through a four-month-long Olympic Qualifier Series, held between March and June 2024 in various locations worldwide.[8]

The host nation France reserves a spot each for a B-Boy and a B-Girl in their respective breaking events, while four more places (two per gender) are entitled to the eligible NOCs interested to have their breakers compete for Paris 2024 through a Universality invitation. To be registered for a spot according to the criteria of the universality principle, breakers must finish within the top 32 of their respective events in the final rankings of the four-month-long Olympic Qualifier Series.[8]

Unfortunately, the Stingrays lost against Spain 9-11, winning the Silver medal.

In diving, Cassiel Rousseau ended up placing 4th in the Men’s 10m Platform.

In women’s golf, Hannah Green is currently ranked 5th, with a three way tie for 2nd place (if I’ve read the data correctly).

Looks like Jess Hull will be Australia’s last high chance at a medal for the games.

Australia not being able to get another gold in the final days (we think) might cost us ‘bronze’ position on the Paris 2024 medal tally, with Japan 2 behind, followed by France 3 and GB 4. Although all 3 especially the latter two would require some feat to equal or overtake.

Was all so close. When Rikuto Tamai (Japan) did his last dive and Rousseau went to third, he just didn’t have the chance barring the winner (Cao Yuan) completing failing his dive.

Some intense competition tonight in the diving pool.

I think it’s fair to say breaking will not be at Brisbane 2032.

Australians can’t dance.

Hannah Green finished 4th at six under par. Lydia Ko won gold with a score of ten under par. It was one of three golds won by New Zealand on Saturday, making it the greatest single day for Team NZ in a single Olympics.

She won silver in women’s 1500m.

Australian chef de mission Anna Meares has defended Raygun’s performance in women’s breakdancing, in which the latter failed to get a single point, and was derided on social media.

USA won their fifth gold medal in women’s football, edging Brazil 1-0 in the final. Germany won bronze defeating Spain also 1-0.

And finally, USA won their fifth gold medal in a row in men’s basketball, defeating France 98-87 in the final.

Tell that to all the Australians who win international competitions, perform on the world stage and television like Dancing with the Stars in America.

I do agree that dancing should not be at the Olympics. Some of the rhythmic gymnastics and synchronised swimming should also not be there.

So as the Olympics come to an end, there’s no doubt that it will go down as a success (especially given we’ve broken our event gold medal count), but are we going to discuss the failures, especially for a number of sports that appear towards the top of this list?

We should have been in better positions to win medals in several events - the Hockey and Rugby 7s come to mind instantly.

Our Rowing investment seems to have been wasted to try and achieve a specific outcome (as @cmo pointed out during the rowing events).

Is she actually serious? The government can’t hand over funds without it being justified.

The AOC will probably just shrug it off and say ‘But hey we dominated swimming and that’s all that matters’.
