NRL on Nine

I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see new NRL graphics for the first Thursday Night Football of 2017.

Infact, I’d go as far as saying that it wouldn’t be surprising to see a new version of the “Wide World Of Sports” intro/branding for 2017 since it’s been about four years since the current version (albeit, there’s been some different coloured versions but the basic concept has remained the same) was introduced. The 2013 WWOS branding was introduced on March 7 that year to coincide with a new NRL season, so…

9 have had these scoreboard graphics for Season 2015 , 2016, I’ve never known them to keep the same style for 3 years.
I remember one year they had NFL style graphics that was top of screen all the way across in a pre season match but never made round 1.
I guess we won’t have to wait long to find out.

##rugby LEAGUE IN 2017

Nine’s Wide World of Sports will once again bring you the biggest rugby league matches exclusively LIVE and FREE in 2017 with State of Origin I, II and III as well as the Telstra Premiership Grand Final – available only on Nine.

Also this year, Nine will broadcast the last five 7.30pm Saturday matches of the regular season, giving fans four matches a week LIVE and FREE as they cheer their team home in the run to the finals.

The season kicks off on Thursday, March 2 when the defending premiers, the Cronulla Sharks, host the competition heavyweight Brisbane Broncos in front of a passionate Sharks home crowd in the Sutherland Shire. The following night Nine broadcasts the grudge match between the Rabbitohs and the Wests Tigers, with Souths’ new recruit Robbie Farah in his first match against his old club. Then on Sunday, Nine has the blockbuster between the Sea Eagles and Eels.

The Wide World of Sports commentary team again will be led by Ray “Rabs” Warren, the only voice rugby league fans have known and loved for over 40 years.

James Bracey will host Thursday Night Football, Friday Night Football, Saturday Night Football, Sunday Afternoon Football and the Sunday Footy Show, and be joined by the biggest names in rugby league including the Immortals Andrew Johns and Wally Lewis, along with Phil Gould, Peter Sterling, Darren Lockyer, Brad Fittler, Ray Hadley and Mat Thompson.

The Wide World of Sports website – wwos.com.au – will keep rugby league fans up to speed online with live scores and statistics, round-the-clock news and expert analysis.

Tom Malone, Nine Network Director of Sport, said: “We are more excited than we’ve ever been for rugby league in 2017. Last year saw more record ratings for State of Origin and the Grand Final as total rugby league viewership grew, and that will be the case again when Wide World of Sports broadcasts the biggest games exclusively live and free, along with Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and the last five Saturdays of the regular round.”

In a breakthrough collaboration to raise money for brain cancer research, Nine, in combination with the NRL and the Mark Hughes Foundation, officially announced today that Round 11 will exclusively be branded the “Beanies for Brain Cancer Round”. All funds raised will go directly towards brain cancer research. Former Newcastle Knights premiership-winning captain and MHF ambassador, Paul ‘The Chief’ Harragon, spoke at the launch today.

“I’m very proud to be an ambassador for the NRL Round 11 Beanies for Brain Cancer week,” said Harragon.

“Matt Callander and Mark Hughes are very dear friends of mine and both are fighting brain cancer. It’s very endearing that Matt Callander, who came up with the concept, wanted all monies raised to go through the Mark Hughes Foundation.

“This is a very important initiative to raise awareness and funds, which are absolutely vital when it comes to the pursuit of better treatments, remedies and ultimately a cure for brain cancer.

“But they won’t be alone, because the whole rugby league community will be behind them in this Round 11 celebration of mateship.”

Nine’s PR doctors were really spinning hard yesterday at NRL launch

•“Biggest sporting event in Australian TV”

Only the AFL GF was #1 in the metro & national ratings last year… Daylight second.

And when you scroll down the bottom (don’t you love an *)… “Source: OzTam Sydney & Brisbane”. Just to exclude the other three metro markets!

The NRL has 4 games a year with an audiance of 2-3million+

I know that.

But does that mean Nine should use the term “biggest sporting event in Australian television”?

When nearly everyone (certainly advertisers) would expect that to mean the #1 rating sport event last year on TV?

(i.e.) clearly it wasn’t :disappointed:

What I also found a bit funny, was how in their PDF (media package), they used the term “3 of the Top 10 programs on TV in 2016” (or something) over-and-over…

I’m sure they were gritting their teeth that they couldn’t use the term “#1 program on TV in 2016” or “the top 4 programs on TV last year [NRL GF, SOO 1 2 & 3]”

However, it is fair to point out, that the ratings for both SOO 1 & NRL GF were OzTam records.

(AFL GF’s record remains 2005).

There have been some years where the SOO (and even the GF once or twice), has out-rated the AFL GF nationally. Not last year, however, so that’s an odd line to claim.

True.

I think 2015 NRL GF rated slightly higher nationally & 2014 SOO (one of the games) rated slightly higher nationally.

However NRL nor SOO have ever out-rated the AFL GF in 5 city metro :+1: (Wonder if it’ll ever happen?)

The 2nd game of SOO was the highest rated program in 2015 with 2,653,000 (incl GEM) compared to the AFL final with 2,645,000.

AFL 2,654,000 is higher than SOO 2,653,000, though?

Very close however.

This was in 2014

Typo - it was 2,653,000 vs 2,645,000.

But OzTam’s official Top 20 for 2015 had the AFL GF at #1?

Did they exclude the Perth figure because it was on a multi-channel?

The Perth number was not included in the top 20 but was accompanied by an official notice from OzTAM that showed the GEM figures separately to add on.

Hasn’t that been changed now though (i.e.) the same program that airs on a multi-channel to specific markets, will have those numbers added to the Top 20?

So officially, we’re yet to see NRL GF or SOO make #1 on OzTam’s end-of-year Top 20.

Maybe this year?

The thing about last year’s Origin match was that the game wasn’t in High Definition for Perth viewers. Darwin, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Melbourne and Newcastle have games in HD as well as in WIN (until 30/6/16) and SCA9 (from 1 Jul 16).
But I was thinking will Perth see Origin in 9HD?
