NRLW is normally on 9Gem/HD nationally (sometimes on 9HD in NSW/QLD), so I don’t think HD would be an issue for 9 for the NRLW outside of events like the Olympics anyway.
NRL ROUND 23:
FINALS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
PRE-GAME COVERAGE ON 9GOHD
BEFORE KICK-OFF ON CHANNEL 9HD
Amid Australia’s record medal tally at the Paris Olympics, the absorbing NRL on Nine action continues with Round 23, with the spotlight on finals places, live and free on the 9Network.
On Thursday Night Footy at Accor Stadium, the ladder-leading Storm clash with an injury-ravaged Rabbitohs team battling to avoid their 13th loss of the season. The return of halfback Cody Walker will boost the Bunnies, while the Storm will be ruthless in rebounding from a surprise loss to the Dragons. With new winger Grant Anderson in exceptional try-scoring form, the Storm will look to rack up the points for another win as they chase the minor premiership.
In the local derby on Friday Night Footy, the Eels face the second-placed Panthers. The Eels, determined to finish the season strongly, are fielding the same team that upset the Warriors in Round 22. Two of the key players are Eels fullback Clint Gutherson, who has scored five tries in his last seven games against the Panthers, and the masterful Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary, who has amassed 52 points in his last three games.
Nine’s coverage from Commbank Stadium will be led by Danika Mason, with expert commentary from Phil Gould, Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater and Andrew Johns. Peter Psaltis will call the game, with Paul Gallen and Emma Lawrence providing sideline updates.
And on Sunday Arvo Footy, it’s a home game for the Newcastle Knights against the Wests Tigers. The Knights, who must win to retain any hope of sneaking into the top eight, will be looking for a five-star performance from fullback Kalyn Ponga. For Benji Marshall’s Tigers, a long-overdue win might rely on the performance of crafty halfback Aidan Sezer, who needs three points to hit 500 in his NRL career.

WESTPAC NRLW WRAP FROM 10.30AM AEST SATURDAY
As Nine’s record-breaking Olympics coverage comes to a close, the NRLW is set to deliver another top lineup of matches this weekend, live and free on the 9Network.
Coverage starts on Saturday at 11.00am AEST with the Roosters v Tigers clash. Veteran Samantha Bremner, having returned to competition after her 2022 retirement, will be out to make an impact for the Roosters, alongside standouts Jessica Sergis and Tarryn Aiken. The Wests Tigers, coming off a loss to the Titans, need a victory to climb the ladder. Losana Lutu will be a dangerous asset for the Tigers, a rising playmaker.
Next up at 12.45pm, the Raiders host the Sharks at GIO Stadium in Canberra. The Green Machine have three wins from their last five home games. Viewers can expect to see prop Sophie Holyman back on the field after being unable to finish the game in last week’s loss to the Knights. Meanwhile, Sharks coach Tony Herman will be focusing on maintaining his team’s strong defence, especially with fullback Jada Taylor sidelined for the season with an ACL injury.
For a comprehensive preview of the weekend’s matches, viewers can turn to the Westpac NRLW Wrap from 10.30am on Saturday, with Emma Lawrence, Ruan Sims, Allana Ferguson and Marlee Silva.
On Sunday, the NRLW action continues with a double-header at Brisbane’s Totally Workwear Stadium. The Cowboys will take on the Eels at 12.00pm, with Cowboys winger Jakiya Whitfeld aiming to add to her try-double in Round 2. And can Eels centre Rory Owen, who scored in her first two appearances, back it up for Round 3?
Then it’s a Sunshine State showdown between the Broncos and Titans. The Broncos, chasing their first win of the season, are without Brianna Clarke, who is serving a two-match suspension for a shoulder charge. The undefeated Titans will field an unchanged featuring superstar centre Jamie Chapman, who has 12 tries under her belt from her past eight games.
Wrapping up the round, the Newcastle Knights get the home-game advantage against a Dragons team looking to bounce back from another loss last weekend.

Can’t recall if Nine did this last year for Saturday night games, but their host desk tonight is outside the ground, presumably because FOX are the host broadcaster.
lol wtf is that literally someone’s house in the background?
I recall in the past they would do pre-game, half-time and post-game from the Nine studios.
Pretty much!
It’s the suburban ground background. lol.
These 5 games on Saturday night are Fox games and nine wouldn’t have the studio space given the Olympics coverage so they’re forced outside the venue as Fox have exclusivity inside the venue. A ridiculous scenario and stupid way these rights are handled.
Could they have gone to GTV?
Is Stan using that for their preview and review shows.
This would’ve meant the NRL roster of commentators would need to fly south to Melbourne, and fly back.
Though I do know Roz Kelly and Brenton Speed do fly south to Melbourne for Nine’s Grand Slam tennis coverage (Kelly only does Wimbledon, I think, while Speed calls matches on a screen, though in the case of the Australian Open he would call matches from a booth in the arena).
NEP South Melbourne? Docklands Studios Melbourne? Or equivalents in Sydney? All with large studio spaces, wall screens and smaller booths, etc. Should’ve done some or all Australia based Olympics here, freeing up Nine’s station studios. Seven did Tokyo from the aforementioned and Rio from their then new-ish Eveleigh studios.
I went to the NRL match tonight, and saw the Nine “studio” set up on the outside. I was thinking because the game was sold out was the reason they couldn’t go inside. But if the reason is because of the Fox deals on Saturday nights, then it makes sense.
Did they ever use Anthony Maroon?
Not that i heard, Psaltis called last two nights games.
Maybe he did some NRLW?
I heard him do a NRLW game and it was really good. I’m not sure why they didn’t use him for the NRL games.

PANTHERS V STORM: A POSSIBLE NRL GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
The top contenders are set for an epic clash in Round 24 of NRL on Nine, with the Panthers and Storm battling for the minor premiership in what could be a preview of the Grand Final, live and free on the 9Network.
With just two points separating the competition giants on the ladder, Thursday Night Footy promises edge-of-your-seat drama. The Panthers, with magician Nathan Cleary on fire, could be boosted with the return of Origin fullback Dylan Edwards from injury. For the Storm, the dynamite halves combo of Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster is ready to click after their disrupted season.
Nine’s coverage from BlueBet Stadium will be led by Danika Mason, joined by Allana Ferguson, with expert commentary from Johnathan Thurston, Andrew Johns and Cameron Smith. Mat Thompson will call the game, while Brad Fittler and Emma Lawrence will be sideline for updates.
Friday Night Footy serves up the Roosters v Eels clash. After a painful loss last week, the Eels are itching to rebound. The Roosters get Dom Young and Nat Butcher back from injury. The Eels, with young Blaize Talagi in scorching form (seven tries in eight games), could spell trouble for the third-ranked Roosters.
Sunday morning kicks off with a treat for footy fans as Wide World of Sports returns, hosted by Roz Kelly, from 10.00am AEST. Then, The Sunday Footy Show will dive into the NRL Round 24 highlights, preview Sunday Arvo Footy, and cover all things rugby league from 11.00am AEST.
In Sunday Arvo Footy, the Knights, two points shy of the top eight, must beat the Sharks to keep their finals dreams alive. The Sharks are on a high after a stunning shutout of the Titans and sit in the top four. There’ll be no brotherly love lost between Blayke (Sharks) and Jayden Brailey (Knights) as these siblings battle for victory in a crunch match.

The Broncos host the Raiders as the sixth and seventh-ranked teams fight to climb the ladder in Round 4 of the NRLW competition, live and free on the 9Network.
Nine’s coverage begins at 11.00am AEST on Saturday. The Broncos, after a dominant win over the Cowboys, with powerhouse centre Mele Hufanga scoring four tries, face a Raiders outfit coming off a tough loss. They’ll be looking for more spark from Maddison Bartlett after she bagged a double in Round 3.
Then at 12.45pm AEST, the fifth-placed Titans meet the Cowboys. Titans skipper Georgia Hale played herself to a standstill last week with an amazing total of 59 tackles. She’s the defensive rock the Cowboys need to overcome. Similarly, the Cowboys will be looking to a big game from their hard-working lock Tiana Raftstrand-Smith.
For the latest women’s rugby league news, viewers can turn to the Westpac NRLW Wrap from 2.30pm AEST on Saturday, with Emma Lawrence, Ruan Sims, Allana Ferguson and Marlee Silva.
Nine’s NRLW coverage continues with the Sunday triple-header. In the first game at 12.00pm AEST, last-start winners, the Dragons and Roosters, meet at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.
At 1.45pm AEST, the ladder-leading Sharks take on the fourth-placed Knights, who bested the Sharks 22-14 in their last encounter and fancy their chances of repeating the dose.
Closing out the round, the Wests Tigers play the Eels. Eels halfback Rosemarie Beckett, who scored twice in Round 3, looms as a big threat. The Tigers, who are struggling in attack, hope last week’s sole try-scorer, winger Tess Staines, can help them climb off the bottom of the table.
