GO BEHIND THE SCENES FOR THE CANBERRA RAIDERS’

DEBUT NRLW SEASON – THIS SATURDAY

The Canberra Raiders and Nine’s Wide World of Sports will give footy fans an insight into the club’s inaugural NRLW season with the premiere of Raiders Rising on Channel 9 this Saturday, August 24, from 3.00pm AEST.

The documentary details the Raiders’ ride from securing a licence to building their playing roster and the challenges faced in the rough and tumble world of professional rugby league as they entered the NRLW competition in 2023.

Developed by production company Good Shout in association with the Raiders, the cameras were rolling through every moment of their first season, getting insights from key players, staff and personnel as the women of the famous Green Machine made their mark in the game.

Wide World of Sports ’ Head of Partnerships and Strategy, Simon Fordham, said: “As the home of NRLW, Wide World of Sports is committed to building the profiles of the players to allow fans to connect with their heroes on every level.

“These amazing athletes battle it out on the field and then go home to juggle everyday pressures including family and work just like the rest of us. Raiders Rising is a great insight into what goes into the on field performances at the top level every week.”

Raiders Rising is available to watch on demand on 9Now when it premieres from 3.00pm AEST this Saturday.

Every NRLW game is available live and free on the 9Network and 9Now.

CRUNCH TIME IN THE RACE FOR THE TOP 8

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTY: BRONCOS V EELS
SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTY: RABBITOHS V KNIGHTS

SUNDAY ARVO FOOTY: DRAGONS V SHARKS

It’s crunch time in the competition as the fight to make the final eight turns do or die, in a crucial Round 25 of NRL on Nine, live and free on the 9Network.

In Friday Night Footy, the Brisbane Broncos are on the razor’s edge, with stars Reece Walsh, Payne Haas and Ezra Mam sidelined by injury. Tristan Sailor comes in at fullback and Selwyn Cobbo returns to the wing for a Suncorp Stadium showdown with the Parramatta Eels.

The Eels, led by Mr 100 Per Cent Effort, Clint Gutherson, are out of finals contention but hungry to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon. They’ll be counting on dynamic Blaize Talagi to keep up his impressive scoring form, with 11 tries in 12 games.

After leading the coverage of Australia’s most successful Olympic Games campaign in Paris, James Bracey returns to host the Wide World of Sports broadcast. He’ll be joined by Johnathan Thurston, Paul Vautin and Cameron Smith. Danika Mason and Darren Lockyer will report from the sidelines, with Peter Psaltis in commentary.

On Saturday Night Footy, the Rabbitohs face the Knights, who must win to have a sliver of a chance of making the top eight. The Rabbitohs need plenty of support for hooker Damian Cook, who has been their best player of late. For the Knights, Jack Cogger returns at five-eighth.

On Sunday Arvo Footy, the Dragons – who last made the finals in 2018 – aim to cap their last game at WIN Stadium with a win over the high-flying Sharks, who are clinging onto a top four berth.

For the Dragons, tough forward Raymond Faitala-Mariner returns to the bench and the new Ben Hunt-Jack Bird halves combination offers dangerous potency. Cronulla get a host of players back, including Braydon Trindall, Kayal Iro and Tom Hazelton.

Round 25 kicks off with a tough Thursday Night Footy test for the battling Tigers against the classy Sea Eagles, captained by a red-hot Daly Cherry-Evans who has scored in their last 11 encounters. The Tigers, facing a third consecutive wooden spoon, need crafty hooker Apisai Koroisau on song to have any hope of springing an upset.

SIZZLING SHOWDOWNS SERVED UP FOR NRLW ROUND 5

ALL FIVE GAMES LIVE AND FREE ON THE 9NETWORK
WESTPAC NRLW WRAP FROM 2.30PM AEST SATURDAY

At the halfway point of the NRLW season, all ten teams feature in another gripping round of footy, live and free this weekend on the 9Network.

The Round 5 action begins on Saturday morning when the Eels play the premiers, the Knights. The Eels have beaten the Knights in three of their four games, and after a tough season in 2023 are sitting on top of the ladder, with only one loss.

On Saturday afternoon, it’s Raiders V Cowboys. Apart from tightening their defence, the Raiders, who have conceded 78 points in their past three games, will bank on winger Madison Bartlett, who has grabbed six tries in her past five home games. Another win will put the Cowboys inside the top four, after skipper Kirra Dibb kicked them home with a field goal last week.

For the latest NRLW news, viewers can turn to the Westpac NRLW Wrap from 2.30pm AEST on Saturday, with Emma Lawrence, Ruan Sims, Allana Ferguson and Marlee Silva.

Plus, footy fans get behind-the-scenes access to the Raiders’ inaugural NRLW season with the premiere of Raiders Rising on Saturday from 3.00pm AEST.

On Sunday, the action continues with an NRLW triple-header. First, the Titans face the Roosters at home from 12.00pm AEST. The Roosters are in top form, with try-scoring winger Jayme Fressard leading the way. Gold Coast top gun Jamie Chapman is also in super touch, with a hat-trick in her past two home games.

Then at 1.45pm AEST, the Wests Tigers take on the Brisbane Broncos. After losing 11 games in a row, the Tigers have rung in the changes. Joining them for the remainder of the season, Montana Clifford has been named in the starting side, along with Tiana-Lee Thorne, who will debut on the wing. The Broncos pose a massive threat after a feast of tries last week from Shenae Ciesiolka, Stacey Waaka and Julia Robinson.

Bringing the weekend to a close, the Dragons face the ladder-leading Sharks at WIN stadium. Dragons fullback Teagan Berry will be out to add to her try tally after jagging seven in her last five games at WIN Stadium. With Rhiannon Byers the only change to the side that beat the premiers last week, the sharp-toothed Sharks are shooting for a seventh consecutive win.

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTY: RABBITOHS V PANTHERS

SUNDAY ARVO FOOTY: ROOSTERS V RAIDERS

NRL on Nine this week brings viewers an action-packed Round 26 as the clock ticks down to the finals, live and free on the 9Network.

In Thursday Night Footy, the Melbourne Storm, already minor premiers, meet the Cowboys in Townsville. Coach Craig Bellamy has rested a stack of key players but will still field a formidable team led by superstars Cameron Munster and Ryan Papenhuyzen. For the playoff-bound Cowboys, prolific tryscorer Kyle Feldt makes his last home-ground appearance and Valentine Holmes marks his 200th NRL game.

Friday Night Footy pits the triple premiers, the Panthers, against the struggling Rabbitohs. With Nathan Cleary still out through injury, Jarome Luai and Brad Schneider will lead the Panthers attack. Cody Walker, just two tries short of his 100th, returns to partner Jack Wighton in the halves for the Rabbitohs.

Wide World of Sports will be live for this game from Bluebet Stadium, led by Danika Mason alongside Allana Ferguson, with comments from Johnathan Thurston, Phil Gould and Andrew Johns. Mat Thompson will call the game, while Emma Lawrence and Brad Fittler provide sideline updates.

Saturday Night Footy sees the razor-toothed Sharks set to strengthen their top-four position against the Warriors. It’s the final game for Warriors legend Shaun Johnson, while Sharks skipper Cameron McInnes celebrates his 200th NRL appearance.

Round 26 wraps up with Sunday Arvo Footy at Allianz Stadium, crunch time for the Raiders who must beat the Roosters to stay alive in the finals race. The Raiders need the power game of prop Joseph Tapine and the kicking game of halfback Jamal Fogarty to offset a red-hot Rosters attack bolstered by the return of Connor Watson and Brandon Smith.

UNDEFEATED SHARKS

UNDER PRESSURE IN NRLW ROUND 6

LIVE AND FREE ON THE 9NETWORK
WESTPAC NRLW WRAP FROM 2.30PM AEST SATURDAY

The ladder-leading Sharks are under pressure when they take on the 2023 grand finalists, the Titans, in Round 6 of the NRLW competition at 11.00am AEST Saturday, live and free on the 9Network.

With their winning streak on the line, the Sharks have named an unchanged side led by captain Tiana Penitani, who has four tries from her past five games. The Titans have made a number of changes, including Sienna Lofipo replacing suspended five-eighth Taliah Fuimaono.

On Saturday afternoon the Eels play the Dragons. The Eels are looking to barge into the top four after three wins this season. The Dragons have three previous victories over the Eels, but will need to dig deep after being outscored 56-12 in the last two rounds.

For the latest NRLW news, viewers can turn to the Westpac NRLW Wrap from 2.30pm AEST on Saturday, with Emma Lawrence, Ruan Sims, Allana Ferguson and Marlee Silva.

Sunday’s triple-header starts with the Knights versus Wests Tigers, the cellar dwellers. Knights fullback Tamika Upton scored twice last week and can repeat the dose. Still chasing their first win, the Tigers welcome back centre Shaianne McGlone, hoping she can spark the attack.

Then it’s a Queensland derby when the Broncos meet the Cowboys. Three wins have the Broncos in second spot on the table, and with Mele Hufanga loving Totally Workwear Stadium – she has seven tries there in four games – they go in as favourites. The Cowboys, with three wins and sitting outside the top four, have savage second-rower Tiana Rafstrand-Smith primed to stop the Broncos bucking.

Rounding out the weekend, the third-ranked Roosters battle the Raiders. The Roosters have shifted fullback Taina Naividi to the wing, Tiana Davison goes to lock, and Otesa Pule starts in the front row. In the Raiders’ first game at Allianz Stadium, they mark it with the return of Monalisa Soliola, Ashleigh Quinlan and Shakiah Tungai.

Brad Fittler’s cringe-worthy Channel 9 television interview with Jessica and Noemie Fox

A car crash live interview with Australia’s gold medal-winning Fox sisters has rugby league great Brad Fittler under fire after critics called him out over “inappropriate” remarks.

“I’m just waiting for kiss cam to come on … on me,” Fittler told viewers.

“It’s not happening.”

Brad Fittler’s cringe-worthy interview with Australia’s Olympic gold medallist sisters Jessica (left) and Noemie Fox.

Jess Fox turned away from Fittler with an embarrassed look on her face, while sister Noemie responded with an awkward laugh.

Fittler then asked Noemie “do you like it?”, to which she replied “huh?”

Noticed Drury Forbes is on commentary for the NRLW double header today (presumably because Peter Psaltis and Brenton Speed are on Paralympic commentary duties).

I wonder how long he has been at Nine for?

I hope Nine stands Fittler down for that.

I don’t know that he works for Nine as such… he’s called NSW Cup games for FOXTEL before… I suspect he’s on loan?

That’s what I think, too.

I know Nine loaned Anthony Maroon when Mat was in Paris for the Olympics, while Salty was called up to call a few games during that period (while also juggling calling the shooting).

The fixture for this year’s Pacific Championships was announced yesterday. It begins with a men’s and women’s double header at Suncorp Stadium on Friday October 18, 12 days after the NRL grand final. Sydney’s CommBank Stadium will host the men’s and women’s finals, as well men’s and women’s promotion/relegation playoffs, on Sunday November 10.

How do you rate Drury as a Commentator for NRLW?
Channel 9 called him up.
At present he calls Hostplus Cup games, and NRL for SENQ radio.

Tomorrow night the Broncos are out to break their Brisbane bogey in their last appearance of the year against the Melbourne Storm, 2024 minor premiers. The game’s longest running rivalry takes over Friday Night Footy when the Rabbitohs and Roosters write the latest chapter in their never-ending book of feuds.

The Rabbitohs would love nothing more than toppling their hated rivals to end a torrid season, while the Roosters are eager to road-test playmakers Connor Watson and Sandon Smith who join the starting lineup after season-ending injuries to Sam Walker and Brandon Smith. Led by an always fired-up Cody Walker, the Bunnies won’t be making it easy for the Roosters before their off season break.

NRLW Round 7 will pit the current top 4 teams against each other in what shapes as finals dress rehearsal on Sunday afternoon. The ladder leading Sharks will meet Millie Elliot’s Roosters, while the Knights host the Broncos at 6.00pm, featuring Knights reigning Dally M Medallist Tamika Upton and Broncos legend Ali Brigginshaw. 2024 NRL FINALS EXPERT PREVIEW

The Melbourne Storm with Billy Slater
The Storm have the perfect mentality for the finals and are in good health. External pressures will not faze them, and history shows they can keep their feet on the ground when hype is pushed their way.

They have a great balance to their style of play. They can suffocate teams with relentless pressure during the cycle of the game, but have an ability to pull the trigger when needed. Halfback Jahrome Hughes is a key cog in the Storm wheel, the controller who does most of their kicking.

Coach Craig Bellamy will be mindful of excelling in these big games, but he’ll quickly order a back-to-basics reset if the team need to readjust in order to advance. Their biggest opposition will come from the Penrith Panthers.

The Panthers with Phil Gould
Four Grand Finals in a row, and three consecutive premierships, shows that the Panthers know the pathway to our game’s ultimate glory very, very well. Self-belief is crucial at this stage of the season and the Panthers boast a confidence born of demonstrated ability. They are the team to beat.

They have become the experts in big-game football. They have an outstanding defensive record, and defence wins premierships. They are very comfortable in the pressure-cooker of finals football. They also have Nathan Cleary, the best “big moment” player in the NRL.

History shows us that in the NRL era no team has come from outside the top four to win the Grand Final. The best credentialled team outside the top four this year is the Manly Sea Eagles. Much will depend upon the fitness of Tom Trbojevic, but there is no doubt that Manly at their best can make a deep run in the finals.

The Roosters with Brad Fittler
After a disastrous ending to the regular season, losing the chance to host a home semi-final and suffering injuries to three of their best players in the crucial positions of hooker, halfback, and in Victor Radley a ball-playing forward, they face an uphill battle.

But with those players out, the Roosters will still field a strong team and the motivation hasn’t changed. At the end of this season the club say goodbye to several of their favourite sons in Luke Keary, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Joey Manu, Joseph Sua’ali’i and Sitilli Tupouniua and the team will lift for them.

For this team to win, their discipline has to be perfect. They can still match it with the best while they are winning field position.

The Sharks with Paul Gallen
Externally, no one has given them any credit, but this season they’ve won as many games as the best teams to be in the top four, and history shows you gotta be there to win the competition. They’ve been consistent and their coach Craig Fitzgibbon will have them motivated to silence the doubters.

This squad has been together for a few years now and they will have learned a few lessons, which is crucial in these big games. I feel they have boxed smart throughout the season to be ready for the finals. They have regularly overcome injury to key players to keep the wins coming without any fuss.

Key players Nicho Hynes and Braydon Trindall have all come back at the right time of the year, and they’ll need to go to a new level to beat the Storm, Panthers and Roosters. Just don’t be surprised when they do.

The Sharks know they’re not highly rated, and they’ll like it that way.

The Sea Eagles with Andrew Johns
Outside of the Storm, the top-four teams all have major frailties heading into the finals. Manly need Tom Trbojevic back on the field, and if he can return in week one of the finals and manage the pain in his shoulder they can do some serious damage in September.

They have the big-game players in Trbojevic and Daly Cherry-Evans, and they look like they have another gear. As it stands, I think all roads lead to a Storm-Panthers Grand Final. But if there’s one team to upset the apple cart, it’s the Sea Eagles.

The Cowboys with Johnathan Thurston
Within the four walls of the Cowboys club they truly believe they can challenge the top teams, and not being valued as a contender is definitely a pressure release in these big games. They have shown they can score points from anywhere on the park, but what has let them down this season has been attention to detail in defence.

There’s a saying that winning hurts and holding on through the uncomfortable parts of the game is what wins finals. For them it’s not about one player, it’s about all 13 chipping in for the ugly stuff.

Tom Dearden and Scott Drinkwater can score tries from anywhere, outside backs Valentine Holmes and Murray Tualagi are State of Origin players, halfback Jake Clifford can kick them out of trouble, and hooker Reece Robson showed his big-game credentials for NSW in Origin. Throw in damaging backrowers like Jeremiah Nanai and the ingredients are all there – they just need to come together as a group. A home final in Townsville is a great place to start.

The Bulldogs with Sonny Bill Williams
Expect plenty of grit and toughness from the Bulldogs. It’s exactly how they’ve played all year and what has elevated them to the finals after many years in the cellar. Will that be enough to win the comp? I have my doubts, but with Stephen Crichton leading the way they will play tough, and teams will have to work hard to beat them.

They have built their game around defence and the effort areas that most people don’t appreciate while watching live. On their day anything is possible, and the strength of this side is that they’ll put themselves in the contest simply through effort.

With premiership winners Crichton, Viliame Kikau and Matt Burton they have the talent to challenge the top four but they cannot afford any injuries.

The Knights with Darren Lockyer
Reigning Dally M medallist Kalyn Ponga is in great form and his running game is a constant threat for any team the Knights face. In the must-win game against the Dolphins their defence was excellent, and that’s the foundation they’ll need to build on for their finals campaign if they wish to go any further.

They have most of their best players available, which is hugely important at this time of year.
