Yep, that was always the plan once it launched but HD was a problem (given Gem was HD). You’ll now see a lot more sport migrate over.
Yes, it’s a bit strange then that 9Go! wasn’t HD before 9Gem was.
9Gem was the “overflow” sports channel before HD though so it was the natural to get HD first.
Didn’t 9Gem start out in HD (MPEG2)?
As I recall it it was
9 - SD
90 - Gem (HD)
99 - Go (SD)
Women’s footy outperforms men
Women’s rugby league has grown to such an extent that it is now out-rating men’s Super Rugby, the Bledisloe Cup, and last weekend’s A-League grand final on free-to-air television
Two weeks ago the opening game of the women’s State of Origin series on the eve of Magic Round attracted a viewership of 937,400 on Channel 9.
Now compare that to:
» Wallabies v All Blacks rugby union: 520,100 on Channel 9.
» Wallabies v Argentina: 419,200 on Channel 9.
» Wallabies v Wales rugby union: 363,100 on Channel 9.
» A-League soccer grand final: 329,000 on Channel 10.
The comparisons exclude data from Stan, Fox Sports and Paramount (not available).
It was a bit complicated because it went to SD after the launch of 9HD so that both Gem and Go were SD but Gem always seems to be the preferred choice for sports. Perhaps closer demo to the middle of the road rather than very young skewing for Go?
Possibly also a legacy of being the original HD multichannel, so they just left the sports on Gem anyway.
Well GEM means “general” content so it made sense to keep it there I guess. Plus it was still HD in some areas wasn’t it? Heck there’s still somewhere that doesn’t have the main channel in HD right?
Imparja doesn’t.
They have GEM in HD though don’t they?
Emma Lawrence is pregnant with her first child, due in the off season.
Watching the Alternate streams via 9Now so I don’t need to put up with any ads and the commentary. As well, you can see that there is the 9Now Olympics watermark on the screen up the right hand corner.
What’s the MPEG for 9HD. Like the quality.
I’m guessing that Mathew Thompson, Andrew Johns & Cameron Smith were the world feed since Nine has excusive rights to Origin. Does Nine do the “world feed” for their 3 games a week?
I think FOX does the world feed for every other game except Grand Final.
Correct - Fox are the world feed for every men’s game but Origin and the GF. Although I’d use the term ‘world feed’ pretty loosely with what Fox/Nine provide to the world.
Commentary last night seemed to lack energy compared to previous years (IMO).
I think that was a reflection of the game itself. I think everyone was a bit shocked by the send off after only 7 minutes. From there it was a bit of a foregone conclusion really.
If that was the cause, it seems very unprofessional. Plenty of games maintain an energetic commentary in similar circumstances. Seems like a defeatist attitude.
If I’m 9, I’d try (again) to get Dan Ginnane or someone over as the lead caller.
Thompson is technically good but lacks punch.
