NRL ON NINE’S ANZAC DAY DOUBLE

3.00PM DRAGONS V ROOSTERS, 7.30PM STORM V RABBITOHS

LIVE AND FREE ON CHANNEL 9HD AND TO STREAM ON 9NOW

NRL on Nine’s ANZAC Day extravaganza is ready to roll with two huge games on a special day for the nation, live and free this Thursday on Channel 9HD and 9Now.

There are four games of footy live and free this weekend on the 9Network, headed up by the ANZAC Day double with the Dragons v Roosters clash at Allianz Stadium from 3.00pm, followed by Storm v Rabbitohs at 7.30pm.

With their backline boosted by the return of speedster Dom Young alongside a battle hardened forward pack featuring enforcer Victor Radley, the Roosters are chasing a bounceback win, while the Dragons, who are resurgent under new coach Shane Flanagan, go on the hunt for points via the scorching speed of fullback Tyrell Sloan and the aerial threat of Zac Lomax.

Host James Bracey will be joined by rugby league experts Andrew Johns, Phil Gould, Cameron Smith, Brad Fittler, Johnathan Thurston and Billy Slater, along with Danika Mason providing sideline updates.

A famous rivalry born out of the 1970s features on Friday Night Footy when the Manly Sea Eagles meet the Parramatta Eels at 4 Pines Park on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Star Sea Eagles backs Tom Trbojevic, Daly Cherry-Evans and Luke Brooks will be ready to pile on the points in front of their raucous home crowd.

The NRL Sunday Footy Show will dissect the round so far from 11.00am before the wounded Raiders meet Nicho Hynes and the high-flying Sharks in Sunday Arvo Footy from 3.00pm.

Phil Gould’s ANZAC Day preview

NRL on Nine expert commentator, Phil Gould said: “ANZAC Day is the most important day on the Australian calendar. It’s a day to stop, reflect and give thanks to all who served this country in conflicts around the world, to protect our freedom and allow us to enjoy the country and the lifestyle we have today.”

“The traditional ANZAC Day match between the Sydney Roosters and St. George-Illawarra Dragons, is my favourite club game of the year. Rugby league has become a part of this National day of thanks and celebration, honouring our service men and women.

“The respective clubs and players involved, always see this as a privilege to be a part of the day, and their performances never disappoint. The importance and excitement of the occasion motivates all participants.

“With both teams presently in great form, this year’s clash promises to carry on that tradition with an action-packed and drama-filled affair. Enjoy your ANZAC Day football.”

After great coverage in the afternoon game, nine are appalling by not calling the Mel-Sou game from the ground. Hosted and called off tube. Disgraceful they couldn’t send a secondary calling team down there. It detracts from the coverage.

I mean, I don’t know if I would go so far as to call it appalling and disgraceful. I really don’t have a huge problem with hosting the coverage from the studio since they still have a presence on the ground. Does calling the game off-tube take away from the coverage? It does a bit. Could they have sent a commentary team down? I’m sure they could. It’s clear that Nine put their efforts into the game this afternoon, which is fair enough as it is the centerpiece match. But it would also not be cheap to have two crews going for games on the same day, one of which would be travelling.

They could have at least had a different crew calling the game to at least make it seem like it was at the ground. Joey already called the game this afternoon and Cam appeared as a part of the coverage.

It does a lot. You can tell they aren’t there. It sounds shit and they are the host broadcaster after all.

I agree it sounds better when they are at the ground, you get the vibe of the crowd and the game. I wouldn’t say it sounds shit when they call the game off-tube, though. I think it sounds fine, but flat; could be better.

Nine will be hoping for a good result in Melbourne tonight, after disappointing and network affecting main channel Storm results this year… No Victorian teams in tonight’s AFL game (albeit the large Melbourne Anzac Day clash audience earlier this afternoon would’ve flowed into Seven this evening). A nice window for the NRL, Storm and AAMI Park tonight.

Though it’s been a one sided game so far tonight, at least it’s in the Storms favour for GTV.

And on the flip side, a good opportunity for Queensland audiences tonight with Seven’s GWS v Brisbane Lions AFL match (main channel and no local NRL team playing).

I’d be interested to see who call for Nine while Matt Thompson is in Paris, do they just promote Peter Psaltis to the main team, or they’ll grab Mark Levy or Rabs’s son from 2GB to call.

They have Brenton Speed as well, maybe they’ll use him? I’d be surprised if they send both Mat and Brenton to Paris, as there would be no back up to Psaltis.

A shame the top of the table 1 v 2 clash (Storm vs Sharks) won’t be on free to air this weekend though. I know the draw and broadcast schedule was done months ago however.

Sometimes the NRL cannot anticipate that such matches wouldn’t be televised by Channel Nine, as is the case with the Storm vs Sharks match you mentioned that will be exclusively televised by Fox League on Saturday night.

Between 2007-20, Nine always televised the Queensland Derby between the Broncos vs Cowboys, however the 2021 match played in Townsville was held on a Saturday twilight slot meaning it was exclusive to Fox League.

Last year’s round three match between the Broncos and Dragons was also the first time since 2001 that this particular match-up wasn’t shown on Nine.
