Disgraceful effort by Phil Gould tonight. His biased commentary and unprofessional whingeing after every Storm try tainted the broadcast tonight.
Victoria got both versions tonight I think.
I notice that during player interviews, Brad Fittler and Alanna Ferguson wore blue plastic gloves holding microphones. This is more effective than Seven’s AFL coverage in which a mike was attached to a jib.
There were rumours, again from Buzz in the Terrorgraph (read into that what you will), that a Nine commentator is itching to get back into coaching. Could this be a sign that Gus wants out and is acting like a petulant fat toad to get out of Nine?
Grateful to live in New Zealand and only be subjected to that Channel Nine effort four times a year. How Gould is employed is beyond me. Rabs is unfortunately past it too.
Tonight’s GF telecast finished at 11.06pm AEDT, 36 minutes late.
I wonder if Perth left early to go to news then?
I’ve undoubtedly said it before, but here goes again anyway: If the NRL wants television coverage of the game to move forward in a positive way, then it’d probably benefit from a new FTA broadcaster.
Ray Warren probably should’ve retired at least a decade ago, while I certainly agree with everyone else’s criticisms about Phil Gould.
I think it did, either at 7pm or 7.15pm Perth time after the post-match presentations.
2020 NRL GRAND FINAL BIGGEST LIVE BVOD AUDIENCE OF ALL TIME
Sunday night’s NRL Grand Final Match between the Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm recorded the biggest Live BVOD Audience of all time.
The match, which saw the Storm claim their fourth Premiership title, secured a Live Average BVOD Audience of 153,000 on 9NOW, peaking at 282,000 (BVOD Reach). This equates to 19.6 Million minutes and 500,000 stream starts.
Overwhelmingly, the content was streamed by People 25-54, with that demographic accounting for 64% of viewing.
The massive digital audience for the NRL Grand Final drove 9NOW to achieving its biggest BVOD streaming day ever, with a total of 57.5 million minutes of content streamed yesterday.
9NOW is Australia’s No. 1 commercial BVOD service, with a commercial free to air share of 41.39%.
9NOW continues to dominate live streaming, taking out the Top Four biggest live streamed programs year-to-date across commercial free-to-air television:
PROGRAM LIVE BVOD AUDIENCE
NRL GRAND FINAL MATCH 153,000
NRL GRAND FINAL PRESENTATION 88,000
2020 AUSTRALIAN OPEN D14-MEN’S FINAL 86,000
MARRIED AT FIRST SIGHT - FINALE 79,000Hamish Turner, Nine Program Director, said: “What these figures illustrate is that live sport is such a significant growth area for 9Now. To have more than a quarter of a million people tune into the match via 9Now is a phenomenal result. In the coming months the State of Origin and Australian Open will also deliver significant year-on-year growth to the platform.”
Interesting to compare media releases
From Nine above:
9NOW is Australia’s No. 1 commercial BVOD service, with a commercial free to air share of 41.39%.
From Seven’s Upfronts
7plus is the No. 1 commercial FTA BVOD service with a 42.4% market share
And comparing with the AFL Grand Final streaming ratings (from Seven’s press release on Sunday)
UPDATE 29/10: according to OzTAM, the AFL Grand Final had a live VPM audience of 57,000 which equated to 2.293 million minutes. It had a peak (BVOD Reach) of 90,000.
And that was for connected TVs (like Telstra TV, Fetch, PS4). The numbers would have been much higher if Seven was able to stream the match on mobiles and tablets as well.
The massive live BVOD ratings for the NRL Grand Final again demonstrates the importance of getting full digital rights. When the AFL rights are up for renewal in 2023 or 2024, Seven has to get the full suite from the AFL and not let Telstra getting away with it again.
It comes down to finances. Will Seven be able to afford the digital rights? AFL will no doubt go to market with separate broadcast and digital packages and sell to the highest bidder/s.
NRL TV guide for next Wednesday in Perth shows
Nine Perth 4 November 2020
3pm Nine News
4pm State of Origin
7pm State of Origin postmatch
7:40pm Nine News Perth
8:10pm Nine News Late
Nine News Late straight after Nine News?
That’s an odd bit of programming.
That also doesn’t match the information from Nine that has the game finishing at 7:10. Nine also advised yesterday that the post game highlights are on 9Gem.

Queenslander Karl Stefanovic has vowed to balance out Channel 9’s State of Origin broadcast after announcing he is joining the commentary team for the upcoming series
Oh dear God…
anythings better than Gus Gould
True. Shoving your head into a large bucket of feces is better than listening to Gus Gould and/or Karl Stefanovic.
Hopefully they’ll put Gus and Stefanovic in the same room. Now that’s some good TV waiting to happen, especially for State of Origin.
