Grateful to live in New Zealand and only be subjected to that Channel Nine effort four times a year. How Gould is employed is beyond me. Rabs is unfortunately past it too.

I’ve undoubtedly said it before, but here goes again anyway: If the NRL wants television coverage of the game to move forward in a positive way, then it’d probably benefit from a new FTA broadcaster.
Ray Warren probably should’ve retired at least a decade ago, while I certainly agree with everyone else’s criticisms about Phil Gould.

2020 NRL GRAND FINAL BIGGEST LIVE BVOD AUDIENCE OF ALL TIME
Sunday night’s NRL Grand Final Match between the Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm recorded the biggest Live BVOD Audience of all time.
The match, which saw the Storm claim their fourth Premiership title, secured a Live Average BVOD Audience of 153,000 on 9NOW, peaking at 282,000 (BVOD Reach). This equates to 19.6 Million minutes and 500,000 stream starts.
Overwhelmingly, the content was streamed by People 25-54, with that demographic accounting for 64% of viewing.
The massive digital audience for the NRL Grand Final drove 9NOW to achieving its biggest BVOD streaming day ever, with a total of 57.5 million minutes of content streamed yesterday.
9NOW is Australia’s No. 1 commercial BVOD service, with a commercial free to air share of 41.39%.
9NOW continues to dominate live streaming, taking out the Top Four biggest live streamed programs year-to-date across commercial free-to-air television:

And comparing with the AFL Grand Final streaming ratings (from Seven’s press release on Sunday)
UPDATE 29/10: according to OzTAM, the AFL Grand Final had a live VPM audience of 57,000 which equated to 2.293 million minutes. It had a peak (BVOD Reach) of 90,000.
And that was for connected TVs (like Telstra TV, Fetch, PS4). The numbers would have been much higher if Seven was able to stream the match on mobiles and tablets as well.
The massive live BVOD ratings for the NRL Grand Final again demonstrates the importance of getting full digital rights. When the AFL rights are up for renewal in 2023 or 2024, Seven has to get the full suite from the AFL and not let Telstra getting away with it again.

It comes down to finances. Will Seven be able to afford the digital rights? AFL will no doubt go to market with separate broadcast and digital packages and sell to the highest bidder/s.
