The ABC announced this afternoon that Craig Hamilton would leave the broadcaster on Saturday August 19 to join the mental health sector (see ABC Local Radio thread).

Craig has called many NRL matches for ABC Radio for close to three decides. It will be a big loss to the broadcaster.

It will be interesting to see who will be Craig’s replacement.

MMM Melbourne took tonight’s Brisbane vs Melbourne game (a virtual reserve grade game but that’s for another thread), which will probably be the only game until the GF that will be on 105.1 unless the Storm are scheduled to play the Sunday final in Week 1 or the Saturday Night Week 3 game (and even then coverage is no guarantee). Even more of a shock was that Dan Ginnane actually was in Brisbane to call, alongside the Brisbane based Ben Te’o (Redcliffe Dolphins Queensland Cup Coach) and the recently (last year) relocated Ryan Girdler.

Wow. Does 3MMM ever take NRL calls?

Origins (although not in 2021) and the GF. They used to take the odd Storm game when there wasn’t AFL such as Good Friday Night when they often played the Broncos, but only ever took a club game outside of the GF when the Storm were involved. Most famously MMM Melbourne in essence cut their pre match for the 2021 AFL GF in Perth to take the Storm’s preliminary final which was almost immediately prior.

I didn’t think MMMelbourne listeners would care much about the NRL.

Strange graphic Triple M have there… I’ve never heard Emma Lawrence call an NRL game play by play , so how is she a “caller”?

Yeah think that’s an error by the graphic designer, they called Daisy a caller in the AFL one and he isn’t

Triple M had the team of
Dan Ginnane, Aaron Woods, Russell Packer and Anthony Gelling sideline.
Great effort by triple M to call the game from Mt Smart today and get the atmosphere in the call.

Did they say they were in Auckland? It wouldn’t surprise me if they called it off the TV in Sydney.

Ray Hadley to call record 34th NRL Grand Final

Radio broadcasting legend Ray Hadley will call his 34th NRL Grand Final this Sunday, eclipsing the radio record he currently shares with the late rugby league icon, Frank Hyde MBE, OAM.

Hyde called 33 NSWRL Grand Finals from the Sydney Cricket Ground between 1953 and 1983 (including replays of the 1977 and 1978 Grand Finals) on Sydney radio station 2SM.

Hadley’s first Grand Final call was on 2UE in 1987, where Manly – coached by the late Bob Fulton – defeated the Canberra Raiders, coached by Wayne Bennett and Don Furner.

Ray Hadley and Frank Hyde

Ray Hadley said: “When I started calling Rugby League in 1987, John Brennan asked Frank Hyde to listen and critique me on a weekly basis. In the early stages, Frank said ‘you need to get into a rhythm, you sound like a race caller’. I replied ‘that’s because I am!’. He laughed and said you’ll get there. At the end of 1987, he called me after the Grand Final and said ‘there’ll be no more phone calls from me – you are where you need to be’.

“I got an email from one of Frank and Gabby’s sons, Pat, this week telling me how proud his dad would be for me to break his record by calling my 34th Grand Final. The entire Hyde family has always been very supportive. My lasting memory of Frank will be his generosity and encouragement. He was not threatened by an ambitious young bloke, but rather proud he was part of my journey. Surely Frank must be the next media person to be elevated to the NRL Hall of Fame.”

Greg Byrnes, Nine Radio Head of Content, said: “The records keep coming for Ray Hadley. In recent times we’ve celebrated 21 years of Ray on 2GB Mornings, then 151 consecutive survey wins, and this weekend it’s a record 34th Grand Final call. What a privilege it is for us all to witness one of the greats of radio broadcasting in full flight!”

Hadley and Hyde are both inductees in the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame and their famous catch-cries will forever live in rugby league history; Hyde’s “It’s long enough, it’s high enough… and it’s straight between the posts!” and Hadley’s, “Don’t touch the set, don’t touch the dial, don’t you go anywhere!”.

Ray Hadley’s record 34th NRL Grand Final call can be heard on 2GB Sydney and 4BC Brisbane on Sunday 1 October 2023. Coverage begins from 1.00pm (AEDT) with the NRL Grand Final between Penrith Panthers and Brisbane Broncos kicking off at 7.30pm (AEDT).

I don’t listen: is he a good caller or is he just a relic? (i.e. has he aged like Bruce McAvaney or Martin Tyler?)

Ray’s alright. Not up to the level he was in the 90s or early 2000s, but he can still put on a good radio call. It’s probably wise that he saves himself for a handful of big games per year so that he can be sure to put in the required effort.

Honestly I think there are other radio commentators who do a better job of it these days and do it week-in-week-out (Andrew Moore, Joel Caine, Dan Ginnane), but Ray’s best these days is still good enough.

I preferred David Morrow and Warren ‘The Wok’ Ryan when they were on the ABC.

Hollywood (Greg Hartley) and Zorba (Peter Peters) on 2KY and Frank Hyde on 2SM were all better than Hadley

I enjoy David Morrow too. He’s still doing very well. The others you mention were before my time, sadly, but I respect their status as legends.
