NRL Broadcast Rights (2028-?)

TBH I’m not a fan of the 6:00pm kick-off. I preferred the 2007-15 format when there were two Friday night matches being played simultaneously, with Nine televising one match live and the other delayed depending on the teams involved and/or the appeal of the match.

If Nine were to get the AFL rights from 2032, that would make them unbeatable (given they also have the Brisbane Olympics), and it would also mark the second major swap of broadcasting rights hands between Seven and Nine this century, after the cricket and tennis swapped networks in 2018-19.

Interesting snippets:

“The certainty of knowing what the next 7 to 10 years look like is important for us,” Abdo told The Australian Financial Review.
[…]
The NRL’s current broadcast deal is estimated to be worth more than $1.7 billion when including rights in New Zealand, but Abdo and Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys are seeking a bigger and longer deal in the next round of negotiations.

So 2028-36?

Yeah, I don’t like really like watching matches on delay. I prefer 6pm Friday to that.

The other option with Perth and PNG is 4 Saturday games or 3 Sunday games plus MNF.

I think V’Landys is living in the 1980s where Nine had rights to State of Origin and QRL and 10 had the rights to NSWRL until they couldn’t pay in early 1990s.

I can see that, should the NRL try to split State Of Origin and the regular competition, there would be no cross promotional opportunities of saying things like :

“STATE OF ORIGIN live and free 7pm Wednesday night on Channel Nine”

7 really are ramping up their NRL coverage - Agenda Setters, getting Matt White, World Cup rights, reporters and Matt White in Vegas. Could be showing they are invested in the product to help their bid.

AFL is already on 7mate in Perth, so NRL would have to be on 7two.

I’ve noticed 10 haven’t been noisy with NRL but they’ve also ramped up.
There’s been more A-League promo as well as a LOT more sports promos over summer with all the niche sport 10 has.

Also as mentioned prior - the NRL seems to make Nine have NRL on the main in Melbourne.
Seven can’t offer main channel there or for the new team in Perth at all?

If Seven agree to run NRL on the main channel on Monday nights in the 2 NRL states it will potentially scramble their usual reality show schedule in those markets. The Voice, Farmer and MKR are all structured at some point around early week consecutive days. I can see it disrupting the flow of those shows to throw in NRL in the middle and what do they air elshere The 1% Club repeats?

And it doesn’t seem feasible to run the reality shows on out of synch in NRL and AFL markets given the spoilers that will happen.

Why not this:

AFL Thursday | 1% Club
AFL Friday | NRL Friday
Movie/BH&G
AFL Sunday Arvo | NRL Sunday Arvo → News → Reality
1% Club | NRL Monday
Reality
Reality

Haven’t they done that thing before where main-channel programming is aired on 7mate/7two if the main one is occupied by footy?

2032? SCM’s results and ongoing cost-cutting measures, combined with DAZN’s apparent unwillingness to pay full price for the current AFL deal, may present Andrew Dillon with ample reason to pursue a new, longer-term agreement. Both current corporate owners appear to be burdened by a contract that each will struggle to sustainably finance.

While $30 million in cost savings could realistically be recovered through logical operational adjustments, recouping $3.4 billion is an entirely different matter.

Seven should be fighting hard to get the NRL rights for Saturdays, rather than for Mondays. Since there’s no AFL on Saturday nights under the current deal…

Question is, is the NRL wanting to part ways with Fox Sports?

Seven used to do that a couple of years ago for one off things like the Brownlows. MKR would air in Sydney and Brisbane but that episode didn’t have a significant result to be spoiled. But it isn’t something that could be done every week. Last year, however Seven ran The 1% Club repeat in NRL states instead.

Only in Victoria. The rest of states will see their teams live if they play that slot from R8/10.

They could run The Agenda Setters (AFL review show) on the main channel in Mel/Ade/Per I guess.

But it would get slaughtered by MAFS/Block.

No! For the love of God, do not you dare deny loyal Seven viewers the extra episode of BH&G the network so generously thinks they deserve… all because of live NRL on Saturday!

Surely the nation can survive one less tackle, but missing a crucial segment on begonias and backyard decking? Unthinkable. Let the footy wait — the people need their Better Homes & Gardens!

I never really took White to be a major NRL guy. Obviously from Sydney and would be an NRL fan, but always thought his passion was V8 Supercars and Rugby Union? Unless it was just because those were the regular rights (outside tennis and Olympics) that Seven held at that time.

I’m also pretty confident PVL isn’t going to look more favourably on their bid because they’ve signed him and sent him to Vegas.

In their current financial state, can 7 afford to add NRL rights into the mix?

Seven are really giving the NRL season opener from Las Vegas a lot of coverage in Sunrise.
