NRL Broadcast Rights (2028-?)

The company will provide financial results Thursday morning. Let’s see where that takes us.

If losses deepen even further (already something like half a billion last 2 years), err, best to stay out.

I do wonder how the distraction of the WBD saga might hurt them in this process.

That’s true, but it did show that they could have a big bid. I know 9 wasn’t that serious but 10 was the second highest. So they do have a good chance at getting NRL with a serious bid.

But I still think 9/Stan will somehow still have the bigger bid or a 9/Stan/Fox mix will probably be the bigger bid. Or at least like the AFL, they will probably up their bid to overtake 10/Paramount.

Vegas Confidential has been told Seven is open to a shake-up of the NRL draw.

Monday night football was scrapped in 2017, but there are suggestions it could make a return if Seven strikes a deal with the NRL.

Nine’s major free-to-air rival is also interested in securing the State of Origin rights.

And the games will be found on 7two and 7flix.

I’m not sure if the NRL can justify playing five days a week - the NFL plays over a five day span, but rarely plays Fri/Sat obviously.

I don’t see an issue with it, other than potentially with scheduling so teams don’t have short turnaround times between games.

Scheduling I think is the big one plus I think it’s beneficial to let the games breathe at the end of a round.

2016 had Thursday to Monday. Turnarounds have to be managed but it’s doable.

Based on the SCM financials released the other day surely seven are not even remotely in contention. They don’t have the large amount of money PVL is looking for. We really can’t seven take this on to botch another sport. They’ve already ruined all the others they have with poor/stale/subpar/cheap coverage.

Aw yeah - SDTV quality.
Could actually see 7Flix happening if 7Two has horse racing and 7Mate has AFL overflow if main channel has news

Seven “wants” Monday Night Footy to return? No thanks. I wasn’t a fan back in the day and am still not a fan.

I know they want a piece in the action. But having 5 days of NRL in a row is too much - even from a NRL fan.

I suspect the entry to Monday Night Football would be acheiveable for them potentially - not sure about Origin though

Doubt it - Assuming Seven also televises Thursday and Friday Night Football, they would air the NRL on the primary channel in Sydney and Brisbane, with the AFL on 7mate, while this would be reversed in the southern states (i.e. AFL on primary, league on 7mate).

What will work in Seven’s favour are multichannels, the luxury of which Nine didn’t have when they held the rights to both codes simultaneously between 2002-06 meaning they had to televise one after the other on Friday nights, while on Sundays there was a double header: AFL then NRL in Sydney/Brisbane, and a second (condensed) AFL match in the other markets.

Seven, 7TWO and 7mate are in HD in most places as well so even better. :slightly_smiling_face:

Seven are in play entirely because of anti-siphoning. They remain the best option for Foxtel/Kayo as a free to air partner, but if the NRL holds firm on wanting to be on main channel nationally then they need options like Sunday and/or Monday night football, and see if Fox will budge on “Super Saturday” to open up the spare slots.

If Nine are all in on Stan, then Foxtel have to work with Seven. Ten should probably take the deal if they come up, but they’ll be everyone’s third choice.

Seven can make up the money on entirely how screwed Dazn are if they lose the NRL entirely.

Monday night can rack off. In its day it was notorious for some shocking games.

Thursday night can rack off too. As can 6pm Friday. Terrible times for people to get to games.

And if Seven get all/any NRL rights this will increase the chances of Nine/Ten getting some/all AFL when that comes up next.

7 does have radio now unlike 9 - no idea how much of a part that plays
