As much as we loathe Nine lobbing everything to Stan as of late that’s going to cause headaches for Fox.
Nine, a longtime partner will now want it all and it may just break the stranglehold Fox has. Which long-time partner do they cherish more?
I guess ditto for 10/P+ as well but they don’t have any history with the NRL
I suspect behind closed doors there’ll be some threats/strongly worded discouragement over it. I don’t think a 3 game essentially All Stars series benefits from being on another network from the competition that feeds into it.
Networks also lump it at the moment when the competition loses their best players for several weeks during Origin - less likely to do so if it’s on another channel.
I can see why PVL wants to do it for $ but I suspect the reality is much different.
Nine boss Matt Stanton says the broadcaster won’t overpay to retain the NRL rights if the financials “don’t stack up”, as the company revealed it has inked a number of AI deals through its publishing business.
Interesting comment by Stanton. Is Nine really willing to walk away from the NRL, and just relying on Australian Open tennis, MAFS, rugby union and The Block to survive until Brisbane 2032 Olympics? One of these may not make it to 2032.
And whilst nine is not willing to pay overs, 10 will have to pay a massive premium over and above to even be considered.
You’d think if 9/stan or DAZN/9 offer something like 4.5billion over 5 years then 10/paramount will have to offer 5-5.2billion over five years to even be considered as credible. They are at a significant disadvantage.
This is standard posturing pre negotiating and standard messaging to shareholders and stakeholders. He can’t say they want the NRL renewal at any cost lol.
Nine would need to take a lesson or two from the troubles Seven endured during the 2002-06 period in which they didn’t have the AFL - their ratings, especially in Melbourne, dived south, often finishing third in the ratings (including a period of at least eight straight weeks in 2004) without any major winter sport to televise during the year (in addition to a number of programming flops).
Could Nine survive without the NRL, especially in the Sydney and Brisbane markets where they are most dominant?
Isn’t that what happened with AFL? 10 had the massive bid before 7/Fox had the late last bid to win it
I think the 9/Stan bid was low at 500mill per for 5 years, 10/Paramount+ was bigger bid at 600mill per for 10 years then the late bid from 7/Fox at 643mill per for 7 years.
I suspect they have a price or number internally that would be their best and final - but that would also fluctuate on how many games they are willing to secure per round etc and whether Stan plays a part. They’d be prepared to wear it I suspect if an all Stan play was possible, whatever the cost within reason.
Yes but the 10 bid wasn’t large enough to push seven and Fox to the wall. The larger premium needs to be so significant that the others can’t beat it. They’ll need to lean into paramount sky dance for the money and offer international streaming etc. they’ll need to leverage everything to be in with a shot.
