It’s still a mystery to me how this actually happened.
They were rating average for so many years. Suddenly they have one good survey just as they were axed. They’ve moved to another station and now all of a sudden they’re loved all over Melbourne as if they’ve been a mainstay show for years and years.
It makes we wonder if they never were axed would this have still happened?
This was predicted though. Melbourne will not adapt (well) to a local show being axed for a Sydney based show thrown down their throats.
Go back to 1987 when HSV7 was taken over by Sydney management. Local shows were axed in favour of Sydney based content. The station soon drooped to 0 and 1s on the ratings. Viewers then switched over to 9 and 10 News. Very predictable.
It’s all just fake love really though. People are only interested in them now because they (local Melbournians) were screwed over by an interstate show.
I’m wondering if it’s just a honeymoon period and once the KJ show starts to disappear from local news coverage people will return to their normal shows or stop listening and Nova breakfast will return to their normal ratings.
Let’s be honest, it’s not an amazing must listen to show really. It’s no Ross and Russel or even Christian O’Connell.
If they’re such a good show why weren’t they rating well or as popular before? They’ve been on for years? Then they get axed and are all of a sudden Melbourne’s angels?
My guess is the audience is now a mix of regular Nova listeners with some of the previous KIIS audience who prefer local breakfast and Jase and Lauren would be familiar to them.
I was a big Jase and PJ fan, and when it became Jase and Lauren, it took me quite a while to settle into it.
But that settling in phase hit a month or two just before the show was axed. All three of them make really good and enjoyable radio together. It’s like radio made by your good mates.
So it was a shock when they were axed, and when the opportunity came to follow them over to Nova I did. As did many other KIIS listeners who went through the same experience. And the nova listeners hung around too.
Simple…They were building their audience prior to being axed in December. I believe their final ratting report was in the 7s. KISS’s highest ratings in a number of years. So they were building momentum last year.
Nova 100 has now taken their audience and built it over theirs. Plus add in a trash Sydney based show that doesn’t connect to the market and you have less competition.
Don’t see how Brisbane could come to Kip and Robyn’s aid, as they’re unlikely to land a gig on a competing station in Brisbane. If ARN are insane enough to network K&J into Brisbane then Nova, B105 and Triple M will be the winners, and 97.3 will plummet (further). Simple as that.
Exactly. Plus, all the publicity has exposed them to more potential listeners who tuned in out of curiosity and then kept listening because they liked what they heard.
People aren’t listening to J&L out of pitty. No one cares enough to disrupt their routine like that.
The simple answer is J&L we’re building their audience. The ratings show they were gradually building their audience. In a market with strong heritage shows, which Fox and Gold have, that can take a long time.
The reality is that the FM breakfast ratings have been dominated by Fox and Gold for a long time, but those shows are starting to get a bit old and stale. They’re still good shows, but they’ve got to the point where some of their audience are getting tired and want a change. The with K&J’s launch, J&L have received a heap of free publicity, and the move to Nova added on Nova’s existing audience. That was enough of publicity to get people interest enough to have a listen, and some have decided that they like what they hear more than their previous show and have stayed.
My listening habits have been a perfect example. Until 2019/2020 I was a regular Fox listener for the best part of 15+ years (with brief periods with other stations), and then I started to find Fifi and Fev were starting to bore me. They were still doing a good job, but I just found it repetitive and not what I was looking for. I started listening to Christian O’Connell and found it to be a breath of fresh air, engaging me on a new level. But early this year I started to feel the same way - I still liked the show but felt like a needed a change, so switched to Nova while it was still BLB. They were certainly different - probably too immature at times, but I had a short commute and it was a good change of pace for a short time. I was actually starting to go back to Christian and times and then along came J&L. I’d never listened to them on KIIS, but being a radio enthusiast was interested to hear them start on Nova. After a while, I found that I liked the show a lot. It’s got a good, relaxed pace, doesn’t try to be something it’s not, is locally relevant and most importantly is actually quite easy to listen to, so I’m still with J&L and won’t be going anywhere else anytime soon.
