That’s my point.
Isn’t that what’s wrong with Hit Music Stations in this country?
They aren’t young and cool and their presenters don’t align with the music they’re playing.
You don’t see 20 year olds on WSFM/ 4BH or GOLD etc

I think the problem is that they don’t what they want to be.
They want to be cool and young but they don’t want to lose the audience they have in the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Aren’t they chasing a 20-45 year old demographic in the mornings and drive? So having a 30 + year old with some life experience would be more relatable than a 22 year old fresh out of university.
I see. Yeah, it’s hard.
It’s just odd that’s all. We don’t have any young breakfast show hosts on hit stations. It just doesn’t make sense on paper.
Seeing as we are in the Nova thread, every cap city, they’re all older teams. Even Perth. Fitzy, Wippa, Ash, Luttsy, Susie, Nat, Nathan etc they’re not old but they aren’t young either.
But they just tried Ben and Liam at Breakfast in Melbourne and they struggled. They aren’t willing to let a team build an audience over many years. They’d rather bring in an established team like Jase and Lauren.
They worked on Triple J I think didn’t they? Rated decently?
The whole station needs to be fresh, hip and young. Not just one slot.
The problem is that whoever is running the station wants ratings not fresh, hip and young.
Sounds about right.
I want to listen to new hits. Not start my day at 9am with an hour of older music.
I thought you were in your 30s David? Lol
Yeah? Sorry, I’m not following your point?
Are you suggesting I should be listening to older music or something?
A lot of 40 year olds don’t want to listen to young 20 year olds - they mostly sound terrible and are completely unrelatable. Majority of the guys sound like their pants are too tight and their balls haven’t dropped.
At least announcers in their 30’s are a good middle ground for younger and older. They’re young enough that the 20 year olds aren’t put off, and not so young as to put the 40 year olds off.
Ben & Liam also did well on Nova 91.9 in Adelaide, it was probably part of the reason they were moved to Melbourne off the back of their success in Adelaide.
Even they’re 30+ now.
I don’t think there’s anyone named in a current metro commercial breakfast or drive show under 35.
It’s part of the problem with the lack of diversity in radio formats in Australia. There’s no room for a younger format without shafting an existing profitable audience.
Can’t recall the Sydney presenters, but when Nova Melbourne first launched, they nabbed presenters from Hitz FM and Triple R.
From memory, most, if not all presenters, were in their 20’s/early 30’s at the time.
Tim Blackwell’s a great example. Started on Nova 100 nights at 20 when the station launched and hasn’t left the network.
Number one in Drive. Why would you drop him?
The Hit regional stations used to be a good place to find up and coming radio talent, many in their 20’s but with that all networked now that resource is gone. The main resources now would have to be podcasts.
Podcasts and “reality tv” shows.
Clint Stanaway presenting news on Jase and Lauren from Brisbane this morning, after taking part in the celebrity team relay at the Australian Swimming Trials last night.
No suggestion you would, but it’s a clear sign that Nova have consistently made the decision to age with their listeners rather than stay as the youth network. Good or bad, it’s the same as when everyone else has done too.
Was it really though? How many actually ended up going onto bigger and better things or metro markets. Most turned out to be pretty average and those that were any good either left the industry for more money or moved into junior producing roles at metro stations.
