Nova Network

So Triple M has it covered. No need for a whole Nova station when there is not much “modern rock” music making an impact at the moment.

Triple M tried a modern rock format on DAB in 2017 - 18 and it didn’t rate, and was replaced by MMM Aussie which also didn’t rate and was replaced by MMM Soft Rock.

It would therefore be a complete waste of time for Nova to try it, if it hasn’t worked in the past.

Triple M Modern Rock was such a weird station too. Some of the stuff they played I wouldn’t call ‘modern’

Totally agree that it wouldn’t be viable with the lack of modern rock around these days.

‘Nova Nation’ has already launched on Brisbane DAB+, replacing Nova 90ss duplicate. Sounding great so far!

Still playing Prince’s Cream yet the DLS is for Nova Nation tracks.

Is Campbell Swinton still working for Nova? Fix it Cammy, poor effort.

Great effort @TheChase, any lower bitrate? Any 32kbps for low bandwidth/small data quota?

Been listening to Nova at various times over the weekend and I have to say it’s sounding a lot better than when I last tuned in. Still a few things to fix but the music is sounding a lot fresher and the throwbacks have been varied.

I’m divided on this - they tend to now be playing more hits from the early 00’s - namely “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus, “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence and “Where is the Love?” by the Black Eyed Peas/Justin Timberlake - and I think they may have played some more 90’s hits recently too.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know when did Nova begin their “fresh hits and throwbacks” slogan? I think it might’ve been at least since the middle of last year, as I know for sure it wasn’t during the 2021-22 summer.

2021-2022 was Turn Up The Feel Good.
Before that was it was Fresh Hit and Throwbacks / Non Stop Hits.

What is interesting with these early 00’s Throwbacks that you mentioned, they are staples on KIIS. So Now Nova is trying to imitate KIIS now in the pursuit of ratings.
Nova is starting to sound better but still has a long way to go.

Speaking of KIIS - a throwback they regularly play is “All Rise” by Blue. Even heard it on Mix 102.3 via Lava this evening.

I can stand KIIS playing throwbacks because when I was young, they regularly played 80s and 90s music, plus some of the newer music (at least when they were called MIX). Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think it was until 2008-09 that they revamped the station in terms of what type of music they were playing - and that included playing more modern/newer songs and less throwbacks.

Nova’s “sounds different” slogan in its early years was what made them stand out from the rest. I would actually prefer it if they focused more on newer music (hence the “fresh hits”) to rival, say, Capital FM in London.

Sick of hearing all of these. They play them like they’re current hits. They need to be banished for good. Instead, they should go back to the last five to ten years and find some of the hits they were playing then for their throwbacks now.

Prayer in C - Robin Schulz, Lilly Wood and The Prick
Desire - Years and Years
Hoops - The Rubens
Cool Kids - Echosmith
Starving - Hailee Steinfeld and Grey ft. Zedd
Papercuts - Illy and Vera Blue
Symphony - Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson
Cool for the Summer - Demi Lovato
1-800-273-8255 - Logic ft Alessia Cara and Khalid
All My Friends - Snakehips
Ocean - Martin Garrix and Khalid
Chameleon - Pnau
Lovely - Billie Eilish and Khalid

I wholeheartedly agree. Nova’s policy of playing the same old throwbacks is getting quite ridiculous. Next thing you know they might play “Beautiful Day” by U2 instead of their current song “Atomic City”.

They need to move on with the past and get on with the present and future.

And while they’re at it, they should focus less on playing the same big artists like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Pink, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Bebe Rexha to name a few. Just because some of these artists will be touring here soon (or are in the case of Smith) doesn’t mean they can over-promote them. Play the emerging artists and give them some air space so that Australian music fans can get to know them.

Some of the throwbacks you mentioned are actually quite bearable to me (esp Prayer in C, Cool Kids and Starving - never get sick of it). If anything, Nova should limit their throwbacks to songs that are no more than ten years old.

And they also need to stop playing (or at least play less of) “Sweet but Psycho” by Ava Max, which I consider to be their “teacher’s pet” song.

These are the worst. I flick stations every time these artists are on.

I mean, gone are the days when Nova would play fresh music from emerging artists like they did prior to 2022.

I remember in mid-2021 they played a song by Griff called “Black Hole” while in the first third of 2022 they frequently played “House on Fire” by Mimi Webb nearly every day (on last count it has had ~ 250 plays on the station).

These days it seems they’ll only play particular artists or songs when Smallzy interviews them on his nightly show, as was the case in February this year when they played “Psycho” by Maisie Peters upon her being featured, and in March when Ava Max’s (then-latest) hit “Million Dollar Baby” was played upon her being interviewed in studio.

The sooner Nova gets back to this type of format, the better I reckon.

These are popular/recently resurgent on TikTok/the internet, don’t know if that has anything to do with it?

Wouldn’t know anything about these songs becoming popular/resurgent on TikTok recently… I reckon it’s more of a focus by Nova to get its older listeners to reminisce about those good old days - in my case it would be hits that were on the airwaves when I was in primary/high school.

2DAY FM in Sydney and Triple M also tend to play more older music these days, too - I reckon there’s a lack of recent new music by newer artists being pushed to radio these days. And with new music by U2, Taylor Swift and Pink being released recently, it feels like we’re living in the past.
