Very little difference from the standard Nova playlist, with a different name. It is nothing like the original Novanation that aired when Nova first launched. Well I am not surprised, quite disappointing.
8:45pm Update: I stand corrected, they have left regular programming and are now playing some pretty good dance mixes.
It didnāt kick into gear until around 8pm.
Novanation started at 6pm with a mix at the top of the hour at 6 and 7pm with normal playlist in between.
It now sound identical to the Capital Weekender with an English DJ hosting , and behind the decks. Massive improvement Nova.
The 10pm Friday mix was a strange one. The first 20 minutes was too safe but the music got better after with some good funky house. Iām just puzzled as to why the first 4 mixes were all 80s remixes. It was weird but it got better.
A return to dance on a weekend night? Long overdue, but well done Nova.
Everything old is new again.
I think they are heading in the right direction. For years it has been their same repetitive playlist on shuffle, while KIIS and 2day fm have had a specific Saturday night playlist.
I wonder why it has taken them so long?
They are starting to make some significant changes. They also introduced a new Sunday night show at 8pm with Jermaine DāVauz four weeks ago. He is also a producer on the Ricki Lee, Tim and Joel show and has previously been a producer for Kyle and Jackie O.

Listening to Nova Nation tonight and so good having Dance music on Nova on a Saturday night. A good vibe when youāre going out or driving around. So much better having this than the regular playlist they had been playing.
They need to update their Nova App info though. It doesnāt say Nova Nation tonight but Nova Boyās Summer Jamz.
Loving the refreshed playlist this week. A real change. Fresh āthrowbacksā and just an overall fresh and updated vibe. Dropping new music straight away too. Keep it up!
Iām yet to listen to Nova outside Smallzyās Surgery this week but hereās hoping they focus more on fresh hits and less throwbacks (speaking of which I heard āTeenage Dirtbagā by Wheatus during Smallzyās show last night).
Do we feel the recent re-introduction of NovaNation, the launch of Club Nova and the tweaks in playlist above are a result of the more recent programming leadership changes?
Hopefully more to come.
So far heading in the right direction in terms of āfreshening things upā at Nova.
You would hope so. Itās interesting to hear the hosts talking about the music again with all the fresh music being played. Itās been ages since Rikki-Lee, Tim and Joel or Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie were talking about the hits being played (apart from sarcastic comments about the overplayed songs by Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Pink).
I know Iāve said this a lot of times but Nova should really look at some of the overseas stations - Capital FM in London in particular - and base their playlists on what they serve there.
And feature fresher new artists every now and then, and play their newer music more often instead of their signature hits over and over (Ava Max and Maisie Peters for example).
Agree but only if the new music is good.
Didnāt the original Nova format just plain new Aussie music - regardless if it was good or not?
No. The orginal Nova was all about Sounds Different. They played a lot of Indi and Alternative music that didnāt necessarily chart. So it may not have been widely popular but it was good music. Now they play music that is popular but also likely to be bad.
These days they play artists who are likely to have only one ābigā hit and have their follow-up music barely played at all.
A good recent example is Rosa Linn who of course had that 2022 smash hit āSNAPā (which has garnered over 750M Spotify streams) but whose recent follow-ups have not achieved the same success - compare that to Olivia Rodrigo who continues to produce hit after hit following her debut success ādrivers licenseā in 2021.
Speaking of Rodrigo, itās good that Nova has played her new song āBad Idea Right?ā which I think is a recycled version of āgood 4 uā.
But this has always been the case for Nova and most commercial radio. As a result, many artists become one hit wonders because none of their other music is played or bought/streamed.
Iāve really noticed this with the Now 80s music channel. So many songs featured that were hits in the UK but those songs werenāt played in Australia and those artists were considered one hit wonders here.
