MOVIE – BLACKFELLAS

CHANNEL PREMIERE / RECONCILIATION WEEK

Sunday 31 May 10.10pm

Based on Archie Weller’s award winning novel The Day of The Dog, Blackfellas tells the story of Doug Douligan (John Moore, Pitch Black), an Aboriginal man caught between his allegiance to his people and his aspirations to escape a cycle of self-destructive behaviour.

Both buoyed and perturbed by his life-long friend, the charismatic “Pretty Boy” Floyd (AFI Award winner David Ngoombujarra, Black and White), Doug finds himself deeply attracted to free spirited young Polly (Jaylene Riley) - presenting a future full of possibilities. But Doug is made all the more aware of his precarious position by his white mother (Julie Hudspeth, Shame) and like it or not, must face his past in order to truly understand his heritage.

A bold and controversial film, exploring the very heart of Australian race relations and winner of 2 AFI Awards, Blackfellas also features first-rate performances from Ernie Dingo (Bran Nue Dae) and John Hargreaves (Don’s Party).

This documentary is presented by Dinawan Dyirribang Uncle Bill Allen, senior Wiradyuri Elder and knowledge holder, who is a descendant of the great warrior Windradyne, leader of the Wiradyuri war of resistance. The Declaration details the Wiradyuri history of four significant sites in the Bathurst region. First, Dinawan shares cultural knowledge about the ancient art site Mayiny-gu Marra-gu, meaning ‘Many People’s Hands’ (known as ‘blackfellow’s hands’), describing the people that visited and practices that took place there for millennia.
