Nine (WIN)

Plus WIN used to have Adelaide and Perth. How does the population of NNSW compare with Adelaide+Perth?

According to ACMA’s Broadcasting Services Act 1992 Section 30 Schedule document, based on the 2011 Census figures:

Northern NSW TV1 - 2,051,033
Perth TV1 - 1,747,002
Adelaide TV1 - 1,352,918

Perth + Adelaide TV1 = 3,099,920

If we take away the Gold and Central Coast regions (due to the overlap with the Brisbane and Sydney TV markets respectively), I think that the population of Northern NSW market would probably be somewhere between Perth and Adelaide.

In any case, I do think WIN definitely would want to own and operate a regional TV station (probably most likely NRN) in Northern NSW if given the chance.

After removing the Brisbane & Sydney TV1 overlaps, the population of Northern NSW TV1 comes out to be 1,306,302, which is smaller than Adelaide TV1.

Those are outdated figures - OzTam and RegionalTAM have 2016 TV market populations on their websites:

  1. SYD: 4,998,000
  2. MEL: 4,974,000
  3. BRIS: 3,218,000
  4. NNSW: 2,144,000
  5. PER: 2,125,000
  6. QLD: 1,825,000
  7. ADL: 1,478,000
  8. SNSW: 1,470,000
  9. VIC: 1,186,000
  10. WA: 557,000
  11. TAS: 521,000

NNSW is the 4th largest TV market in the nation and larger TV market than Perth & Adelaide

QLD is a larger TV market than ADL which is ranked 7th

SNSW/Canberra is a tiny 8000 people smaller than ADL

After removing the Brisbane & Sydney TV1 overlaps, the population of Northern NSW TV1 comes out to be 1,306,302, which is smaller than Adelaide TV1.

That’s not how it works though. Gold Coast and Central Coast are in the official defined TV markets of NNSW. RegionalTAM includes those cities in the NNSW TV market. And why does RegionalTam exist? To measure ratings, so ad rates can be set. That means the stations sell that to advertisers are advertisers pay for that population base.

Even though we know many more Gold Coasters would access their Nine network programming through QTQ rather than NBN, that doesn’t change the fact that The GC is in the TV market, and NBN sells that and advertisers by that.

On that note, I’ve never actually asked before.
Why is the Gold Coast market covered by the Metro Brisbane region and the NNSW region?

It seems odd to have actual networks and affiliates operating in the same city.

It’s to my understanding that the Gold/Central Coast having access to both the regional and metro TV channels goes back to the '80s when the translators for those areas started. Back then, the regional stations from the nearby regional markets - NRTV (on the Gold Coast) and NBN (on the Central Coast) were broadcasting from the local translators alongside the city stations, I guess to give viewers additional choice because those local stations did often run different programing to the Brisbane/Sydney metro channels back in the day.

Obviously when Northern NSW aggregation came around in the Early '90s, NBN and Prime started broadcasting on the Gold Coast while Prime and (albeit not in all areas in this case) NRTV started broadcasting on the Central Coast. It was probably around this time or shortly after that NBN and NRTV started to provide a specific Gold/Central Coast feed rather than relaying the Lismore/Newcastle station.

I agree.

Which time zone do the Gold Coast feeds of the NNSW stations take? NSW or Queensland?
Also, does that mean that Gold Coast viewers have access to Syndey and Brisbane news (and other state based content)?

I’m pretty sure that the Gold Coast feeds of the Northern NSW stations have been on local QLD time (so live programing is delayed by an hour) since the Late '90s.

News bulletin wise, it’s to my understanding that Prime7 Gold Coast airs Seven News Sydney, SC10 Gold Coast airs Ten Eyewitness News: First At Five Queensland (although they carried the Sydney bulletin until about mid-2013) while NBN produces local news/sport/weather windows for the Gold Coast.

Correct there on all counts I believe, SCTV!

The unfortunate screening of the John Travolta movie “Pulp Fiction” at 7:30pm by Prime in 1999 resulted in all 3 NNSW stations being forced to delay their NSW feeds into QLD by 1 hour during DST.

Why? They won’t be affiliated with Nine (for the most part) come 2 July, and WIN would be carrying whatever Ten’s election coverage is, or lack thereof

Just saw an ad on WIN saying “All Australian News starting at Midday on WIN”

Seemed a bit odd.

Someone at Mediahub’s not paying attention.

The Sydney 6pm news update just aired here in Townsville followed by a blank screen with the WIN News coverup and clock in the corner for about 20 seconds.

How is it odd?

its always been on at Midday since they started all Australian news

The wording of the promo made it sound as they it was a new service they were launching.

It was a full promo about the AAN which made it sound like something new, and then concluded with “All Australian News, starting at Midday on WIN”

They would have ran that promo back when they moved it from the Gem schedule.

The AAN has to be the most pointless thing ever. I couldn’t imagine many people even tuning in to watch it in the first place to be honest.
